The morning newsman on WAMU, Matt McCleskey, wrote a special Pledge Song for the WAMU Bluegrass Country fundraiser. Matt, along with legendary master mandolinist Akira Otsuka, popular banjoist and WJLA-TV personality Doug McElway, and ROCKLEDGE recorded the Pledge Song in WAMU's studio. It's a clever composition.

Matt is fun to work with, and a real team player. Very professional; just as he is in the radio world. He has a GREAT voice (you'll agree) and we're trying to talk him into coming out to CABOMA bi-monthly jam in Arlington.

See www.CABOMA.org for info on how you can be a member of the Capitol Area Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association.

The Pledge Song will be aired during the October fundraiser.

ROCKLEDGE

We recorded on June 14. Matt McCleskey has been a rock'n'roller, but brother, does he have a great bluegrass voice! And he's great to work with too; a real pro when it comes to band teamwork and musical sense. We recorded about 5 different versions: a trad BG sound, a waltz, an instrumental, a bluesy version with WAMU Engineer Jen Hitt on vocals (who has a great everything voice...who knew, but, we shoulda known...). We have several different harmony arrangements on that one.

Also in the Studio was advisor and coordinator Katy Daley. She came up with some solid arrangement ideas and kept us rolling. In the Control Room with Jen (when she wasn't in the studio singing) was WAMU mastermind Dick Cassidy. His latest project involved getting Bluegrass Country on your iphone. If you have one, that is. We'd look up and find him smiling on the other side of the glass whenever we pulled off a good harmony blend.
