I arrived home in San Diego early this morning, back from a run of
shows up the coast with Switchfoot. The sun is setting over the
pacific and my hair is still wet from an evening surf. In the
distance I can hear the whistle of the Amtrak from LA heading south.
I'm grateful to be home, grateful to have a place to live, grateful
to have been given another breath alive on this planet.

But today my thoughts are divided, split between two worlds. As the
sun sets over California it begins to rise over Darfur. The same sun.
The same planet. Can it be possible that right now, two and a half
million people are waking up in camps and refugee camps having been
driven from their homes by violent means? Under the same sun, could
it be true that almost half a million people have died of starvation,
violence, and disease over the past six years in Darfur?  Is this true?!

And if this is true, why has the media remained almost completely
silent on the issue? Why has our government maintained it's current
stance of inaction?

When presidential hopeful Obama was running for office he stated that
"We can't ignore the genocide in Darfur. The international community
can't turn a blind eye when children are being slaughtered and women
are being raped. We have to do everything in our power to make it
stop. We have to act. Now."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjSy_-yet9w&feature=player_embedded

Nothing has happened.

And yet the sun is still rising over Darfur. And the sun still rises
over me. And the sun still rises over capital hill... the same sun.

Today we celebrate mother's day with our moms and grandmothers. My
thoughts drift overseas to the mother who is just now waking up,
wondering whether she'll be able to give her children anything to eat.

Tomorrow I begin a three day fast for Darfur. Why fast? Because quite
frankly, I can't think of a better idea. I reckon the best way to
enter into the suffering of a group of people halfway around the
world is to start with the basics. These folks are fasting without
alternative, for three days I will fast with them.

Jon~
Your words touched me today as I felt a pain in my stomach for all those people. The world has so much beauty ..yet is has so many undeniably horrific conditions for some.
Its hard to know about these things and feel so helpless and then ask ourselves what can we do..knowing there isnt much we can do. We can scream, we can write letters we can pray and fast along with you ..feeling like we are in tune with the universe and ask it to somehow move some positve energy to these poor souls. We can hope the president will follow thru with his words.
As I looked out my back porch today the sun was rising and there was a very beautiful young stray cat peering at me thru the glass..its eyes looked strange and as I moved closer I saw that it was blind in one eye and the other eye almost sealed closed. She had a very "goopy" nose as well.
I opened the door to hear her tiny cry of helplessness. I reached down to pet this poor creature and she rolled to the ground bearing her tummy as a sign of trust to me.. then she sneezed and 'coughed" and she tried to purr and it was more of a gurgle . Then she lay there tired from the struggle of getting air into her lungs. I am on my way now to take this poor thing to the humane society to help her..I cant just close the door and pretend she doesnt exist..as she is very sick.
As little as that may seem to some.. closing the door to suffering is inhumane.

I will fast with you. For a year now i've felt as if the Lord has been calling me to Darfur. It's hard, being only a sophmore in high school. I want more than anything to help, more than anything to go there and spread the word of God in any way. This blog enforces that need in me. I will fast as well, you're a wonderful man Jon.

It seems like there's always something going on so far from home.
It's sad to see and hard to hear about other people's tragedies in life.

Perhaps as more people hear and spread the word, our local aids will be forced to reach out to Darfur and it's suffering population. We have the power to make things right.

For those of us that can't help in a major way, perhaps we can be messengers.
If the right ears catch our words, opinions and thoughts on the matter, something will be done.

Jon, thanks to you, I have felt the urge to do the same and fast for a few days.
God Bless.

OH MY GOODNESS!! That was amazingly put!! For one thing u r my favorite band and to just see that u know whats going on in Darfur is amazing! I too know about the genocide and for the past 8 or 9 months have been in a class at my school, in Florida (Nature Coast Technical High) working with about 30 students to create a documentary on this current problem. Our documentary is called the Missing Peace and the first showing ever is next Friday! I love the fact that people r seeing and hearing about what is happening to those PEOPLE over in Sudan and when I read this blog I wanted to cry. It means soo much to me that people r still willing to help other people thay have never met before in their life!! I am 15 years old and for the past 8 months my life has been about bringing awareness to this tragedy. In my class, are saying is that anyone one can help, anyone can be the Missing Peace.

After Darfur, let's fast for the 50+ million babies who have been aborted in our very own country.
Who will cry out for them?

Sadly - Until we recognize our own country's genocide - How can we help another?

I pray for you, Jon. You are a good person and a wonderful spirit.

I feel your passion! I think about these things also. Especially in my passion for getting the word out and doing something about human trafficking. All these issues seem to be so silent in the media...the focus is on celebrities...and petty issues between them and things going on in there lives and other nonsense a lot of the time....may God continue to give us strength to shine the light bright on these injustices...and guide us in ways to have influence on those who can bring an even bigger light to these injustices and truely see results and change!
