While I was sifting thru the wreckage I was able to recover almost every blog entry from our hero's time here at Myspace. Missing are external links and fan responses. Dig it.

Boy do I hate Bush
Current mood: thoughtful
Category: News and Politics

I don't usually come out and make overtly political statements, and I believe that music is not a place for politics, but this is one situation I can't ignore. Who voted for this guy anyway? Man, what an idiot. I've never seen a leader so intent on marching us all toward the end of the world. I can't sleep at night thinking about the death and misery caused by this man. Sure, lots of people want to rule the world, but why take it over only to destroy it? Hope you don't mind my complaint, it's my opinion. How do we sleep when our beds are burning?

I dont like Dashboard Confessional
Current mood: okay
Category: Music

It's true. If you see them on my friends list, well i'm trying to lure in their fresh young fans. And if you came to this page from their page, you already know my stuff is SO much better. But yeah, theyre too emo for me...actually i kinda like "Hands Down," but only b/c i heard my man Michael Stipe sing it with the band in a live video, taken from a show where Dashboard covered an entire R.E.M. album, Automatic For The People. So anyway, still working on the new record. Peace!

new record is taking a long time
Current mood: artistic
Category: Music

hey things dont always turn out the way you plan. but the idea is to make the best record you can. so the experience is like real, and the music reflects the realness of the artist. i always like bands and stuff who are interesting people and have stories to tell and junk, ya know? anyway, so this record is like a hurricane brewing somewhere in the tropics. its path is unpredictable and its full force may not be known for some time... yeah wow. what can i say, they're like sea dragons that you can't control, or they get out of control, and its all pretty cliche, and so my new songs have a lot of chords and well-textured lyrical scapes. or shapes. and i can actually play them, too. this is why i'm hot, how you like me now. don't touch me you'll get burned. you all dont know about this. hang in there kids. r

guest musicians
Current mood: grateful
Category: Music

i'm so lucky to have several friends sitting in on my new songs. friday night i got [someone] to play a killer solo on a beautiful telecaster with a personalised pick dispenser that a guy named kyle let him borrow for twenty minutes right before playing a show. afterward shawnee told me he hadn't played electric guitar in a long time, but i wouldn't have guessed-it sounds great! and on sunday my friend [some girl] played some funky freestyle flute on a track, which is really ganna lighten it up a lot. this week i hope to work with a cellist and an awesome drummer, and gaybot agreed to play some kaos pad for me, if he's in town...'sgonna be a great record. r

I’m not from Texas
Current mood: amused
Category: Life

I'm not from Texas and I've never ever been there. I've been to Canada, which is really, really close, been as far south as Florida and West to Colorado, but not Texas. Friends tell me I should move to Austin where they have an amazing music scene, but I haven't felt motivated to do that yet. Roger Houston was just the silliest, dumbest, cheapest, most generic name I could think of lol. I have an apartment in the city of Rochester, about fifty miles from where I grew up. I grew up in Dansville, a small town named after Captain Daniel Faulkner. One of Dansville's interesting historical facts is that Clara Barton established the first chapter of the American Red Cross there in 1881. My family lived in a big house on Clara Barton Street, just yards form Dansville Junior High School, where I spent most of my time in in-school suspension for being late for school. Isn't that ironic? But eventually the sheer excitement and wonder of city life sucked me in to Rochester, named after Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, who by the way once lived in Dansville and built the first paper mill there. And so, um, you can find Rochester on my friends list, as well as many, many friends form the city of Houston. Maybe someday I'll visit Texas, but because I work at McDonald's I don't make any money. By the way I'm a vegan who cares about the environment and I'm all for small business, and you might think working at McDonald's or Wal-Mart would be hypocritical but I don't think so. The thing is, I don't support the animal industry financially or morally, and I view my function at the restaurant as just a people person among the locals. That's what I do. I take the orders, take the money, wash dishes, bake apple pies, stuff like that. Now, you may laugh at such Mickey Mouse notions, but I don't find it the least bit funny. No no no, just kidding. Ha ha ha. I can't explain it, it's just fun most of the time. Also I've been thinking about buying a leather jacket at a store across the street, where my longtime friend Aaron said he could get me a good deal. I think that would be OK to buy it second-hand, and I'd look really cool. If I do buy that jacket, I'll try to get a photo of myself wearing it, so you can all see just how cool I do look. Well, readers, that's all for today. Blog ya later!

i don’t make the same record over and over
Current mood: thoughtful
Category: Music

it's true. not only is my new record tighter and more fast-paced but the instrumentation is softer and lets the lyric flow, i think, very nicely. i'm getting over my loud drumbeat obsession and am gaining confidence as a singer-songwriter. i tell you what, as into my funky sound as i am, i took a long time writing these songs to not only have personal meaning but fit perfectly into those musical "moments" that happen in songs. the lyrics will speak to you on many levels if you're, um, a "special" person. Ha ha ha. On my first CD, i cut out the singing from two songs because i couldn't stand it. All that's left is a couple minutes of riffs. This time i played most of the songs live a bunch before recording them, with minor changes along the way. it feels good to allow the music this organic kind of growth; it's kind of like gardening. I was just talking tonight with a friend about doing some shows just with a guitar, something Roger Houston has never ever done. But i think it could open many doors, and be good for me. And i'm sure next year's record will sound different-maybe it'll be all about alien invasion. Two years ago i was in a more hiphop kind of place, if you can believe that. i actually got offered a job as a beat maker, but i don't know what happened with that. Last year's CD was kind of techno and out-there and over-the-top. But this one has traditional instruments in the mix like guitars, strings and piano, and i feel like i've cleared out a big enough mental space to relax and sing some good songs. At this point i feel much more comfortable as a songwriter and peformer, and as a blogger. Look Mom, i'm blogging! Just blogging away... the point is, there is evolution at work here. i would hate to say to someone "check out my CD, it doesn't matter which one..." i am going somewhere with all this, and even if i end up where i started, at least i'll be better at it. Happy Holidays! R

Politics bore me
Current mood: bored

Jens is proly ganna kick my ass for being so ignorant here, but anyway. I always vote Democrat because theyre generally more lifelike and seem nicer. Although i think i'm kinda fiscally conservative. Anyway, of course i care about the environment and equal rights and stuff like that, and i dont want my taxes real high and i dont want the economy to collapse, at least not in a bad way. And i think the war is really, really stupid. But i just can't sit and listen to people who all sound the same and it just seems like a game. Like the NFL, but they try to sound smart and important. Whatever. Sure it would be cool to have a woman president, or a guy who apparently is black, seems kinda unlikely but it would be way better than Bush. Something about the whole system just doesnt seem right. Like i have to pay attention to a lot af facts figures and half-assed arguments and try to give a damn, or this great country is ganna sink into recession and stagflation and bad guys are ganna take my rights away. Isnt that really the same old lie, that a bunch of suits own you? wtf? Turn the channel and watch something really interesting, like the NFL. Woooo!! I just think that things will change when we get our heads out of our ass. Not when we read the papers and jump on the bandwagons etc. btw check out my new "acoustic" page myspace.com/rodgerhouston cya

from the road
Current mood: thankful
Category: Travel and Places

raleigh n.c. mar 11 1pm yay its warm here. there was a big snow storm when we left. but here its sunny and like 70. flowers are in bloom. the gigs so far have been great and well worth the crappiness of travel. ppl have been really nice and helpful and the audiences were small but enthusiastic. and now i can finally say ive played in nyc. we werent able to hit an open mic last nite bc we separated when [a tourmate] wanted to play for passersby and i just wanted to sleep by a building. washington dc is a funny town. yesterday was the day our governor got busted for getting with an escort but they made it seem like a much bigger thing. oh yeah so for some reason i couldnt call [whatshisname] on the payphones and he has the guitar so no open mic for me. i did however register at the library of congress, which is awesome. i payed way too much for some tofu at their cafeteria and i ll try to put up the photo from my library id. its just so awesome down here. i love the weather and even the way people talk. it looks like two ppl have been killed in chapel hill but were going anyway. im at a library that unfortunately doesnt allow myspace so ill have to post this later. and we can stay down here a few days so i expect the trip to really mellow out now. in a good way. later r

Another Remix
Current mood: cooky/wacky

Hey! So, like, I finally remixed a song for my friend Josh whose musical project is called Electric Organic. I chose a quiet, solo number because, obviously, it's easy to remix. And I liked it. Dare to step beyond the bounds of Myspace and experience my mix of Kid Oblivion. And here is Electric Organic's Myspace page. If anyone else wants a remix or something, message me and I'll make it happen. Have a nice day, Roger

Hear My Music in Lo-Fi
Current mood: blessed

Well, it's raining, so that means Trees Are Down is in town. Hopefully no one will experience collateral damage from the inclement weather brought by this powerful group whom I am happily opening for in a few hours. The real purpose of this blog, though, is to share a new way to listen to Roger Houston. One that you never even thought of.
I love to hear my songs on Soundclick's "lo-fi" player. I suppose it's for people with dialup or something. It's not stereo and it makes the music sound really old. And I really like it, for some reason. I know it sounds funny, but check it out. I have 34 songs up and heck, I might upload the whole catalogue if they'll let me.
(Later) Well gee, i was hoping to embed an mp3 player but I can't figure how to get a code for Lo-fi. It's probably not a popular request. I am emailing the company about it and I found out that artists can, in fact, upload as many songs as they want! But for now, won't you visit my soundclick music page and click "lo-fi" (right next to "hi-fi" at the right of the page).
