On Wednesday, February 18, 2009 the Pittsburg Post-Gazette featured an article on their website entitled “Overweight Women Face Tougher Pregnancies.” The article sites the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Allegheny General Hospital, who says, “Obesity gives you a risk [for certain medical conditions] whether you’re pregnant or not and the two most common medical conditions are diabetes and hypertension. And even if you don’t come into pregnancy with either diabetes or hypertension, the stress of pregnancy may bring out gestational diabetes or gestational hypertension.”
From talking with patients, I know this to be true. In fact, many have stated that they had problems even getting pregnant before they lost the weight. With bariatric surgery, these health issues usually disappear and many notice the ability to get pregnant increases substantially.
What are your experiences with pregnancy before weight loss surgery? After weight loss surgery? Did you have health issues before your pregnancy or did you gain these issues after getting pregnant?
