John Adams put it well when he said: "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
Patrick Henry wrote: "The greatest pillars of all government and of social life: I mean virtue, morality, and religion. This is the armor, my friend, and this alone, that renders us invincible."
In reading the small book of Nahum the prophet last night, GOD's message to Assyria, especially Ninevah, struck me as prophetic to Washington, D.C. in specific and the United States in general. I wish I could say that I was at a lose, not understanding how the Republic has slipped into the morass of indifference. However, I was born in the 40's, appreciated the 50's as a child, graduated school in the 60's, started screwing up my life in the 70's and proceeded thru the 80's and 90's endeavoring to straighten myself up until I finally figured out that I was not in charge of me, I was not my own creator. I am, in the big sphere of life, part of the problem I see in Washington, D.C. I have allowed myself to be so involved with myself that I have not taken an active part in seeing that our Republic was kept on track, kept responsible to the faith of the Founding Fathers of our nation. At this point, I see prayer as the greatest weapon in the arsenal of the Believers to combat what is being programmed by the present administration. Looked what happened to Ninevah and Assyria when Jonah showed up, skin bleached by the acids in the fish's belly, probably smelling like day old fish, too. He was so startling to the Ninevites that they couldn't help but listen to this weird looking guy. GOD spared Assyria at that time because the whole nation, from throne to gutter put aside their lives, put on burlap and sat in the dust, fasted and talked to the GOD of ISRAEL (not even their own country's gods) about their sins. They prayed to Jehovah, not a GOD they were very familiar with, concerning their deepest and darkest things they hid from others. AND, GOD heard them, saw their hearts and minds were serious about getting things right in HIS sight and HE changed HIS mind about the destruction HE had planned for them. HE gave them ONE opportunity to change and they did.... for a while.
During our Nation's history, there has been a great faith revival every century. I have yet to see one for this new century. Do we need another Jonah? Or would he be a one day wonder?
I am in total agreement of my Friend's comments anout our country. May God have mercy on us and bring about revival.
