An age-old question ~ which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I know my view on this subject, but while pondering it this morning, I realized that it's not really a nonsensical, rhetorical question, like "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?". In fact, "Which came first?" is a question of what you believe.

You see, if you answer that the chicken came first, you are in support of creationism, intelligent design, animals being brought into existence and reproducing from thereon.

However, if you answer that the egg came first, you believe that prehistoric reptiles evolved until one of their eggs ended up bearing an avian species.

Which is the correct answer?

Don't ask me; I told you I know my opinion, but what's yours?

~ O.R. Blackmore

Post Script: That was rhetorical, by the way…

Ah.... I love the topic, and the age old paradox-of-sorts. Although, as you clearly point out, it is indeed not a paradox, just simply open to interpretation. This is all based around the metaphysical question, How does the chicken come into existence? In order to analyze this, lets first view the problem with the chicken being before the egg. In this situation, the chicken clearly exists. But, where does it come from? Nowhere? This defies every scientific notion there is, namely the Law of Conservation of Mass. Matter cannot come from nothingness. As this is such, there is a contradiction in the premise of this situation. The chicken cannot come from nothing, but it exists. A chicken cannot simotaneously exist and not exist. This situation is impossible. Even religious leaders and followers everywhere no longer believe in the idea of spontaneous generation, and few would be willing to debate the Law of Conservation of Mass. As Einstein said, "Religion without science is lame."

Many of my critics may say that the egg has no more ability to randomly appear than does the chicken. Clearly, this is true, but using reason, we can see that through years of evolution, a chicken can eventually result. This is much more rational and resonable, especially considering the fact that chickens are closely related to bone structures to reptiles, and alas, dinosaurs. So, seeing as the chicken cannot appear, but can evolve, and come from an eventual mutant egg of types, this is not only the more scientifically possible explanation, but also the most reasonable and rational argument. So the metaphysical question is answered: The egg preceeds the chicken. If you got through this, then Oasis isn't the only one that deserves Kudos.

That is an old question, and an old blog, too, but I would still like to answer. Though I don't prescribe to the lablels of 'creationist' or necessarily agree with all the concepts of 'intelligent design,' I do share some of those beliefs. I do believe that God is altogether able to create something out of nothhing, and as logical as my mind is, I don't think God can be limited by science. I think that physical law only applies to things that were created, and not to the Creator. In my experience, I have never seen a chicken come from anything else but a chicken egg, and never a chicken egg come from anything besides a chicken. It's also true that I've never seen something appear out of nothing. The fact remains, however, that God is able.

P.S. What do you think about this? I'd really like to know. And I'm not nearly as judgemental as I was before.
Sorry about that!
