1. WFP Donors in the last two years.
a. WFP Donors of 2007 - 2007; PDF file
b. WFP Donors of 2008 (As of May 4th) - As of May 4, 2008; PDF file
2. Notable donations:
1st Place 2007/2008 - United States of America (More than $1 billion as of 2007, more than $360 million in 2008 as of May 4th) - Note that no two countries can be added up to equal even half of the U.S.'s donations to the WFP in either 2007 or 2008, not even the European Commission.
European Commission (AKA European Union) - 2nd Place 2007, 10th Place 2008 - Donated only 1/4th of what the U.S. donated to the WFP in 2007, and less than 10% of the U.S. in 2008 as of May 4th. The EU has how many countries under it's wing? Yeah, more than enough to beat out the U.S., so logic would dictate.
Canada - 2nd Place 2008, 3rd Place 2007 - Really, they deserve a thumbs-up at least.
Japan - 5th Place 2007/2008 - Donated 1/10th of the U.S. in both areas...
Private Donors - 12th place 2007, 13th place 2008 - Seeing as private donors have donated more money to the WFP than 99% of the countries across the world really says something about all those pathetic countries, especially including China, France, Spain, and Russia. The United Kingdom isn't doing too bad.
Miscellaneous Donations - Russia in 23rd place during 2007, 17th place in 2008; China in 34th place in 2007, 26th place in 2008...
Now, look at where our mideast countries are. Saudi Arabia only donated $6 million in 2007, and almost nothing in 2008 as of May 4th. Then, you won't even find some nations on the chart, but OPEC donated at best $50k... while it is true Saudi donated more than $100 million to the WFP only days ago, it was after people found out.
Next up - Google results - Myanmar to finally allow U.S. aid in
If you haven't heard anything about Myanmar/Burma by now, you're an idiot. Plain and simple, so go read something about it. Otherwise, continuing on... the Myanmar government recently blocked outside help from coming in after a recent cyclone, with estimates of up to 1.5 million Burmese dying as a result of disease, famine, snake bites, etc. if they don't get the right support or aid (remember Hurricane Katrina? well this shit is much worse). Now, the Myanmar govt. has finally allowed one C-130 shipment of U.S. aid in, about a week ago.
Now what's my point: well you need to remember this the next time you or someone else decides to bad-mouth America when the rest of the world can't even do half the shit we do.
