How many pairs of socks does one need?
I'm trying to spring clean but I have the toughest time getting rid of things.
I have old skirts that I never wear and probably never will.

Someone just give it to me straight.
Tell me that it's OK to get rid of this excess stuff!!!

Hmm, I like a 2 month supply.
Is that too much? LOL!

7 short, 7 mid-length, and 4-7 knee-highs as far as socks. So, you always have a weeks worth in whatever style suits your needs for the week.

Look at your stuff - if you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it.

It will never look as good as it did and it may not come back into style for a decade.
Why waste the space?

Zen - think zen. If you were asked to do something so wonderful you had only a back pack or a small box to carry it all in, what would you put in it? If you can't carry it with you, you really don't need it.

This woman proves that with what she did.

I like your first answer but can't say I completely agree with the second. I'm in better shape now than I was in my 20's so...my clothes actually look better on me than they used to...but, I know what you mean. I do have things that I haven't worn in ages. I went through my storage unit in LA and took 5 more boxes of things to goodwill. And this is after getting rid of 1/3 of all of my belongings before moving to NY.

I also wish I could be carefree and not hold on to things but I am a pack rat. Do I need all things I have? Probably not but most of it is memorabilia, books and art supplies that keep me happy.

This is all getting so scientific. Hell, you could be like Bill Cosby and wear a new pair everyday. I'm a very basic (non-goth, non-eyeliner, non-powdered nose, non-piercings, non-tats, non-model, non-celeb) kinda guy, still, I'll answer just for fun. I think I have one-half large drawer of black work socks, and three-fourths of a drawer of white sport socks.

My totally unqualified advice.

1 - If they are the least bit worn-out chuck them in the trash.
(smallest of holes, dull colors, stains)

2 - If they have not been worn between six months to a year, toss them like an old stinky shoe.

3 - If they are way funky and special but you'll probably never wear them, donate them.

I guess it depends on our laundry schedule. I think a two week supply would be enough. Organization and clutter are a challenge for me. As far as getting rid of stuff in a broader sense, I read somewhere that anything that agitates is clutter. I definitely am bothered by too much stuff I keep. I found a book about organization and clutter which included how our emotions relate to our difficulty parting with things. Maybe an author like yourself could find it both interesting and useful: " The messies manual" by Sandra Felton.

its ok...if you keep it a clutter it will just grow and gerow and the next thing you know you just die being smothered by oyur own clutter.
now that is tragic
