THE DARJEELING LIMITED TRAILER
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Wes Anderson's comedy "The Darjeeling Limited" will kick off the 45th annual New York Film Festival on September 28.
"It represents a big step for Wes," said festival program director Richard Pena. "I hate to use the word 'matured,' but the humor and whimsy he uses is sharper, better focused and used more effectively."
Fox Searchlight will release the film in New York the day after its festival premiere.
Pena noted that the director has a long history with the fest, which premiered his 1998 breakthrough comedy "Rushmore."
"We're very proud we showed it at a moment it was almost ready to be shelved," he said. "With a little cajoling, the studio allowed us to screen it, and I'd like to think our showing it helped in getting it out there."
EW.com...it follows three brothers who trek through India to find an albino tiger that's actually their reincarnated father. And given that this is a picture from director Wes Anderson — whose last film,
The Life Aquatic, followed a dude looking for the shark that ate his friend — that setup seems entirely possible. Or not. ''You can't trust what you read on the [gossip sites],'' Anderson says of
Darjeeling, which he admits is ''more raw'' than his previous ventures. ''[They] take various elements from the movie and distort them. They're not searching for a tiger.'' Instead, the estranged trio (Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, and Owen Wilson) take a train through the subcontinent because ''one of them organized this spiritual journey for them to bond'' after the death of their dad. Says Anderson: ''But it really just turns into a bender.''
