Asaurus

If you've not come across Asaurus yet you've really been missing out. they're knack for unearthing pop gems, and placing them in all their rough-diamond glory in hand-crafted sleeves is a thing of beauty.

New Grenada: Parting Shots (Enhanced CD Album - Asaurus) - £5

"Strange, bouncy bumble-poprock like your neighbor's kid running amuck in a local music shop." - Palebear.com

"The album may be a bit too ambitious and developed for fans of super modest lo fi home recordings and too cheeky and post-modernly self aware for more mainstream tastes." http://sctas.com/

"Big wads of fun." aidabet.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Pants Yell!: Recent Drama (CD Album- Asaurus) - £5

Pants Yell!: Allison Stratton (CD Album- Soft Abuse) - £8

"..a prefect example of lo-fi indie-pop with the sharp & clever lyrics, tight vocals complete with a catchy, poppy sound." indie-mp3.co.uk

"The songs on this second album of theirs are easily their best yet.." indiepages.com

"..glistening pop perfection of every single song still still sounds fresh, time after time after time and that's the mark of an unbeatable album." Scatterbrain.com

"[Pants Yell!] write simple 2-3 minute pop songs, but they do it so remarkably well that you can picture Stuart Murdoch or Stephen Merritt saying "I wish I had written that song"." onechord.net

"Alison Statton comes to us courtesy of the Soft Abuse label and gets better with repeated spins. In fact the last four tracks on the album are so good I can't stop playing them over and over. The band displays a charming perfection of the soft indie-pop dynamic with subtle, clever, lyrics and hooks aplenty. Having seen them play at Cake Shop a few weeks back only confirmed my adoration. If that's not enough, Boston-area experimentalist Greg Kelley offers up some primo Tijuana brass style trumpet playing on a few tracks just for kicks. Winter's coming, so here's the cuddle music for all the cutesters out there. You can thank me later. " thefader.com

Compared to The Go-Betweens, The Aisler Set, Orange Juice, Lucksmiths, B&S..

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mathletes: Jest & Earnest - £5 (Double CDr - Asaurus)

"[Joe Mathlete's] penchant for pop, clever lyrics, humor and an appropriate degree of experimentation will remind you of everything you love about indie rock." splendidmagazine.com

"Quaint Brilliance" 30music.com

Comparisons to Daniel Johnston and They Might Be Giants, but by a guy who offered Conner Oberst out for a Rhyme Battle (that song's on the frist cd of this album)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Capstan Shafts - Her Versus The Sad Cold Eventually (CDr - Asaurus) - £3

"The first time I heard the Capstan Shafts, I found myself muttering a phrase that hasn't passed my lips in a long, long time: "How can this be so good?" pitchforkmedia.com

the mountain goats are sometimes mentioned in writing about The Capstan Shafts, but more commonly are the words "prolific" and "awesome"

---------------------------------------------------------------------

V/a: For Whom The Casio Tolls (CDr -Asaurus) - £4

The challenge: Record a song using only battery-powered kiddie keyboards and your voice. Millions tried, but only seventeen survived. This is their story.

"a brilliant effort from some guys who know the true meaning of arcade pop." phonynowhere.blogspot.com

Diskettes: S/t (CDr album - Asaurus) - £5

Seriously one of the greatest indiepop bands I've been lucky enough to experience, it's brutally simple, sparkly-eyed wonderful perfect pop music.

"This band is like the sunshine and bubblegum version of The Halo Benders" saidthegramophone.com

"The duo's minimal but criminally catchy acoustic guitar accompaniments, bossa nova finger snaps, fifties girl-group chirps and amateur but head-over-heels-enthusiastic singing sound as if it all should be dusted off from an old cassette tape once used by a vacationing, wide-eyed aunt-and-uncle pair who liked to send their relatives short musical documents." splendedezine.com

----------------------------------------------------------------

The Rough Bunnies: Mit Weisse Westen Dreck Am Stecken (12" album - Yspilanti) - £9

(Ltd 200 - i think this is not available anywhere else in the uk?)

Rough bunnies will be your new favourite band. They're from Sweden but this record is out on Ypsilanti Records from somewhere (Michigan?) in the US. The record is adorable bedroom-pop sort of like Moldy Peaches at their most tender, it could be enjoyed by anyway, especially fans of Jens Lekman. On the internet people tend to mention Shonen knife and the vaselines around the same time as this band (along with the moldy peaches), but really, it's not quiet right. This band is basically what made me think I should start a Distro.

"I thought "A Smile And A Ribbon" were as Indie as it could possibly get - obviously i was WRONG!!!" MJ Hibbett
"The purity of these songs gives you the same fresh feeling that, usually, only the spring is able to deliver." SongsIWish.com

"The Bunnies are a band that touch outsider hearts with pure black and white gold." Tangents.co.uk

--------------------------------------------------------------

Pete Green: Everything I Do Is Gonna be Sparkly (7"-Atomic Beat) - £3

(ltd hand no. 400)

Trad. one-man and a guitar indiepop, beatifully crafted by the lovely, lovely Pete Green an the new yet fantabulous Atomic Beat Records. This beautiful vinyl is accompanied by the infamous insert entitled "The Periodic Table of Sparkly"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pocketbooks: Cross The Line (7"- Atomic Beat) - £3

(ltd hand no. 400)

"Boy/girl vocals, glockenspiels and handclaps, matched with breathtaking lyrics betraying their love for the wonders of everyday life." that quote is from atomicbeatrecords.co.uk, they speak the truth. The problem with this record is you may never get to the b-side because the temptation is so great to just put the needle back to the start... This time Atomic Beat have included the lyrics as an insert.

-------------------------------------------------------------

MJ Hibbett and the Validators: The Lesson Of The Smiths/The Gay Train (cdep -Artists Against Success) - £5

MJ Hibbett and the Validators: We Validate! (CD album - Artists Against Success) - £10

Mark Hibbett (Official Nicest Man In Pop) and his band are fighting the good fight, and this is a call to arms. They are the antidote to everything cynical and dull that popular/trendy acts are made from. These are songs that ensure a grin so wide on the listener's face that their fist is raised into the air, clenched in defiance of jaded, boring, rock n roll music continuously touted as "relevant". Few bands can make people sing and dance and cry in one set, but in this conflict, The Validators are armed with honesty and joy. If you can't enjoy these records I suggest you ask yourself "What DOES make me happy?"

The double 'A' sided "single" is in fact 7 tracks, plus the video for "The Gay Train", and an entire "Live In Leicester" Album as the Multimedia bonuses. The Album also features Multimedia bonuses including demo versions of songs, lyrics, and stories about the songs.

YAY! Records Releases

all of these are limited to 250 copies except "oh victoria" which was a pressing of 1000, and the zine, which is limited to 300

Maria - "Oh Victoria!" 7" (comes w/ poster) £3

Maria "Friends Forever" 7" (comes w/ poster) £3

Maria are from Oxnard, California and they make breezy, shambly, twee pop in a lamentful kind of way. sometimes a boy sings, sometimes a girl, sometimes both. it's exactly whant you'd want from a swedish pop band, or perhaps a genuine c86 band, but um, they're amrican :-)

Catwalk - "Shiny Girl" 7" (comes w/ poser) £3

Great Californian pop with more of a swagger than their labelmates- musically they've got the upbeat C68 thing going. at times they remind me a little of half man half biscuit but with a completely different vocal style.

Pam & Teri - "Lucy" 7" (comes w/ poster) £3

California twins who sing songs about their cat (lucy)! It's very simple and sweet, but also haunting- with just vocals and keyboard.

YAY! RECORDS ZINE - w/ 1-sided 5" by Maria - £3

ever seen a 1-sided 5" record? me either til now! It's a nice little zine mostly about how frustrated the people of Oxnard, CA are with the apathy of their town. some interviews, and of course, the Maria record which is a little noisier than their 7" and sounds great.
