J Dilla aka Jay Dee aka James D. Yancey aka “your favorite producer’s favorite producer” was one of the greatest to ever bless the boards in the past decade, period. It’s amazing how much work he had his hand in and how many artists he’s influenced during and after his time. He pretty much single-handedly changed the sound of hiphop and soul music, bringing it back to the roots with organic elements. There really wasn’t a time in J Dilla’s life where he wasn’t contributing something useful and meaningful to hiphop. The man was even putting the finishing touches on “Donuts” from his hospital bed. If that ain’t dedication, I don’t know what is.
I think I can say that J Dilla changed my life. Hell, he inspired me to start up this brand. So thank you, Mr. James Yancey. From Slum Village to The Pharcyde to Black Star to everything else and in between, rest in beats and may your talent influence musicians and artists for many years to come.
