Who Gives Kudos:

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
I was halfway through the day when realized it was Yom Kippur -the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur was not my favorite holiday growing up. There were no spinning tops, prizes (after finding the Matzo), and no fun food. There was no food. Actually, I am not sure if we, my family, ever fasted. We were secular Jews from Denver - sort of like being  Unitarians.  We were the kind to light the candles and have a Christmas tree.

But a part of me wishes that I would take the day seriously. What's wrong with a little atoning?  And I know I've got some things to atone for -including not atoning today.

Well, in honor of the day, I will post the only slightly Jewish song that I have recorded (other than "Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner")...Sunrise, Sunset

That's the best I can do. And, I will try to be a better person.

Point of order: I'm pretty sure Christmas hasn't been a Christian holiday in quite some time.

Christmas wasn't a Christian holiday for the Hindu kids who grew up down the street from me when their parents put up a tree every year.  They did it because they raised their kids in America as Americans. That doesn't mean they shoved what you imagine is the prerequisite dogma down their throats.  Trees and presents and family get-togethers have nothing to do with talking snakes and returned-from-the-grave characters with supernatural powers.  That's Halloween you're thinking of, and that's a subject for another time.

Don't forget to call Stephen Colbert at 1-800-oopsjew. I believe he accepts most all atonements.  :-)

I tend to think of Verbana Bridge as an honorary Jewish song since it deals with religious conflicts similar to the middle east
