I hate to break it to you guys, but this country already has a good many socialized programs that most all of you would be upset to see disappear (public schools, Social Security, & Medicare, for instance). We're just about the only civilized country in the world that has decided it's okay to NOT take care of EVERYONE. Until we take care of the least of us, can we really call ourselves civilized?

Check out the Top 5 Health Care Lies—and How to Fight Back.

Socialism is not the dirty word you'd been led to believe it is.

true. i have issues with Obama on a few things, especially his covering for the criminals in the gov't and at AT&T who decided unwarranted wiretapping was something they could get away with. And his talk of suspending habeas corpus for suspected terrorists.. but that said, he's a helluva lot more progressive than anything this country's known in a long time while. So, I'll take what I can get.

Maybe you should stick to what you know and keep drawing pretty pictures. Keep In mind that most of these " civilized" countries perpetually have unemployment rates over 10%. I wish you so called celebrities would just entertain and keep your opinions to yourself.

God forbid I have the audacity to talk about anything other than drawing comic books. Being as I had no delusions of being any sort of actual "celebrity," i figured i was on the same ground as every other schmoe on the street who was still allowed to talk about issues they felt were important. God bless America.

Perhaps not a celebrity in the purest sense of it, but your fame, though it be not on the level of say a Tom Cruise still places you at a higher sphere of inflence than the "average schmoe." I think that you suspect asmuch yourself due to the fact that most of your myspace friends are probably fans of your work as an artist, as am I. That being said this affords you a wider audience and therefore greater influence.

i figure if i can turn on the radio and TV and be bombarded by people i've never seen exhibit any sign of humanity or higher thought, spouting fear mongering from the right, i'm just as entitled to try to speak rationally of my views... on my myspace blog of all freaking places.

10% unemployment over there, huh? Sounds pretty much exactly like my neck of the woods. i've got a feeling it's not thousands of would-be doctors and brilliant insurance salesmen being driven out of practice by their burdensome universal healthcare system. And bully for them, regardless, not having to sweat being jobless AND terrified to catch a cold and end up dying of pneumonia because they couldn't afford luxuries like health and life. Not to mention the poor kids of these folks.

Because i don't work for someone else's company, i have to pay for my own insurance, and my wife's, and we've got a kid on the way. i pay $500 a month and it gets me modest coverage with a $6K deductible. And i can damn near guarantee that if i came down with cancer or something else as serious, those extortion racketeers at the insurance company would do everything in their power to weasel out of paying the hospital bill, even though i've busted my ass to pay them mine.

I'll take this one point to point. As for " fear mongering" obama has on miultiple occasions implied that doctors are more likely to perform unnecessary surgeries instead of providing regular treatments because they will be reimbursed more. Sounds like a scare tactic to me. Doctors will not be as prevalent if they are being payed less. Medicare, which is the darling healthcare model for you socialists ( I assume it Is okay to call you that from your statements re the truth about socialism) reimburses at less than 50%. who do you think absorbs those costs. Right private insurance. Insurance companies will go out of business because they are now competing with someone who doesn't have to show a profit. While unemployment is high in the USA now traditionally it is not. France and Germany constantly operate at 10% if you don't like paying for insurance without the aid of an employer, remember that you did have other options than to become a freelance comic book artist. I hear that wal mart has a very good benefit package. Not to mention that your taxes will go up to pay for this. Those lovely european countries also have very high taxation. My wife and I both work in health care and are terrified of what this means for our pay. The problem with socialism is that, eventually you run out of other peoples money- Margaret Thatcher. P.s. When has the us government run anything within budget? Amtrak, Usps, Medicare all operate with bilion dollar deficits

Boy, it's hard not to tell you to fuck off with a comment like that, so you know what, i'm not going to fight it.

sure, but the good lord gave me the ability to draw and do it well, so chances are, no matter what i was going to do, i'd be some kind of artist, and in-house positions are rare, so it'd likely be freelance. Self-employed people, such as freelancers, small business owners, and family farmers, make up a fair chunk of America's work force. So is your solution for all people who want to be self-employed and have coverage to simply deny your abilities as an American entrepreneur and go work for a corporation? Welcome to the United McStates of Wal-Merica.

i know a lot of people in Canada and abroad who do the same work i do, and are not crippled by tax burdens from their healthcare. I also know a lot more people HERE who ARE crippled with medical bills, or who are, despite working very hard, unable to afford adequate coverage to treat serious conditions, or are unable to get new coverage for pre-existing problems. My mom was fired from a job with good coverage. It took her a while to find another job that offered the benefits she needed at a price she could afford, and in the meantime of her job search, she got very sick and had to spend some time in the hospital. Since she was without coverage for this scant amount of time, her hospital bill racked up a debt that she will likely be busting her ass to pay down until the day she dies.  And mom's got it easy compare to a lot of folks who simply literally can't afford to live.

This is a dandy hell of a way to treat folks, i can say that.

If it is to the point of swearing, then no further intelligent discourse is to be had. Thanks for the debate and best of luck to you

no sweat. i felt like that boat ran aground a while ago, anyway. i didn't realize an F-bomb in response to such dismissiveness was enough to upset your fragile sensibilities. Have fun doing whatever it is that sheep do.

The deal is, if you've got coverage you like, run with it. The PUBLIC OPTION that's been proposed wouldn't affect your coverage. What it WOULD do, however is allow folks who can't afford coverage like yours to not go broke and/or die because of their lack of coverage. That shit is REAL, and it happens.

Obama's Death Panels are ficticious boogeymen invented to scare the public. You want a REAL Death Panel? Look at insurance companies who deny or drop clients because of medical conditions. As far as i'm concerned, the Health Insurance industry is a vulture. A parasitic extortionist, preying on people's fear for their own lives. The instant you've presented too severe a condition for them to see you as profitable, they will literally drop you and let nature run its course till you're feeding the flowers.

Your life is not a priveledge. It's not cable TV or a nice car. You should not have to pay a monthly installment to keep it. it is your God-given right. Your most basic, fundamental right.
