Tabitha Denholme, Queens Of Noize, Interview
UK Tribes met Tabitha Denholme from the Queens Of Noize to discuss trends and clubbing
You must be out a lot - tell us what you're up to at the moment…We do a weekly club night, in Soho, called Smash And Grab.
What sort of people come to the club? Our night is a fun night. It’s all based around love-themed records. We
have various people along to play – could be a drag queen, a member of
The Prodigy or
Mark Ronson.
Whoever really. So there is no specific type of person, but just lots
of young Hipster kids getting into it. The crowd has got younger since
we’ve gone on - if they can get in they will. We have thought about
doing an underage club night. It’s on the list of things to do!
You follow fashion and music… what do you think is going to happen next year?I think the whole dressing up and fancy dress is going to get more
popular - it has become what is fashionable, almost. Like dressing up
as clowns and that kind of vibe. I’m definitely up for mixing fun and
costume and fashion. I think that will take off; think it is part of
the whole
MySpace thing with people putting on a performance the whole time, always being on show!
We have noticed a revival of the whole craft ethic – how do you see that fitting into the hipster end of things? There was that whole DIY thing before of people tearing up T-shirts and
then that got so big, it became ugly. It went back to classic looks,
then it comes around again, with the whole DIY thing, but in a far more
sophisticated way. Forums online, such as art blogs, help you with
things to make. If you want to know how to do something you can look it
up. It’s also great to see that it’s younger people making things.
So how does the internet impact on this – you touched on the fact that you can find out how to do anything you like onlineThe impact of the internet is massive; because I’m 33 and I can see the
massive difference in the way we got knowledge when we were younger –
you kind of needed an older brother or sister, but now you have to up
your game almost, finding cool things that are happening that others
don’t know about.
Do you think it’s harder for young people these days to be individuals?Maybe, but not always, they dress the same to be an individual in a
group, which is interesting. Everyone is wearing a look, but it's like
an equalising effect - in a room if everyone is wearing a look,
everyone looks the same!
