Who Gives Kudos:

Sunday, December 07, 2008
One of the things I've consistently heard about the GridLink LP is that it's $13 for 11 minutes of music and it should cost what a 7" ep costs. I am not even going to get into how white trash Walmart made in China that sounds to me...oh wait. I am going to get into it.

This is quite simple. We spent a lot of time and money to get the music/artwork/packaging just the way we wanted it. It was a labor of love, blood and intense devotion over the course of about 3 years with almost a dozen people(musicians, artists and technicians) contributing their time and efforts to the project. (Honestly HD is the same, but more on that another time).

The work stands as a complete body and we consider it a full length release. Most bands have filler songs on their records, but not us. Every song on that record is the result of intense scrutiny and editing. When we started there were almost 20 songs. We threw half in the garbage because we only wanted the best material on the record and refused to accept what we considered only a "decent song".

It also does not come in some shitty generic packaging that looks like every other metal/grind record you have ever seen. It is not loaded with label names and sponsor companies. It is not the over produced garbage that seems to be the norm these days recorded on pro-tools by someone who thinks you need a week to get your fucking sounds down.

If your standards for a good investment of $13 is 25+ minutes of music for your money, go somewhere else. Oh and fucking kill yourself too you pathetic fuck. Maybe you can buy some clothing with lead in it made by people who get less than a $1 a day in a place where the government is totally hostile to democratic process. In short, fuck you.

This is our art. Take or leave it. Oh, and fuck you again :-P

if only more grindcore bands did this...

btw i think that 10-15 minutes is really the right length for a grindcore album.

Fuck em all. If these types are bitching and moaning about such petty little trivials, perhaps they should go download the newest Britney Spears album and go kick it with all their little fashion punks and mall metal buddies while reenacting MTV dramas. There are only the few that actually appreciate the art of it all, even fewer that actually understand the time, energy, inner fuel and task that goes into recording, mixing and mastering, etc.

When I feel its too short I just listen to it 2 or 3 times in a row. There's too much to comprehend on one listen anyways. I found it to be a perfect album from start to finish, even topping the DxAx albums in sheer perfection and no filler.
In other words, right on!

i was doing fine until the fifth paragraph...being pathetic as fuck for expecting more music for your dollar? elitism be damned...your opinion is fine but it just means more people bootleg your shit rather than pay the same amount as an ep. coming from somebody who does own the fucking record by the way. i can still like your record and give you shit....but you're by far not the worst of em, people used to get pissed when they bought 8949 for $10 and realized it was 5 minutes

Choir,

I don't see this is a case of elitism. This is a case of personal frustration over people listening to our music and their main critique is that of price. Considering we are not making money off these records, I find that offensive in extreme. It costs a lot of money to make records and we need to at least break even on that or we can't match the same quality bar in the next release.

Personally, I don't price shop. I buy from people I like. Fuck, I even pay more for gas at the local self owned gas station versus $.10 cheaper a gallon prices down the road at Shell. I paid $16 for the new AC/DC as an import rather than give Walmart my $ and save $8. When I purchased the Blood the Last Vampire DVD and it is "only" 40 minutes long, I was not in the slightest bit upset. It was an awesome 40 minutes. Every moment was considered and well executed! Reign in Blood is the shortest Slayer LP and yet I have purchased it like 5 times now (vinyl, tape x2, CD, CD re-master). At the time it was around half the length of a conventional record. I recall people griping about the length of that as well.

At the end of the day, if you love something and it speaks to you, you should be willing to support the people who make it. The same thing can be applied to books. Shadow of the Scorpion by Neal Asher, almost a novella by todays standards, sells for $18 a copy. I read it in under 3 hours. It ruled. On the other hand, Neal Stephenson's new book costs around $25 at the MSRP. It is almost 1000 pages and it is (in my opinion) painful to read.

Amber Gray is 11 minutes and I forget how many seconds. I think it's worth the $14 ^_^

Re. Piracy...This is a tough one. I appreciate you purchasing the CD/MP3s (whatever ^o^), but working in the software/music industry for almost 15 years now, I've seen enough data to know that people are always going to steal rather than buy if it is easy enough for them to do so. In fact, when you make software you have to plan your pricing around the notion that over 50% of your material will be stolen. It's put many smart/creative people I know out of work.

DA took the stance of, if you want to steal it, go ahead. We even had an open policy of feel free to make shirts/trade CDRs/etc. but don't profit from them, especially in countries where money was tough to come by. Most people bought our stuff for all the art we packed into every release. In the 7 years since we broke up, DA has had tons of bootleg merch produced and sold for profit to fans every since. Some of it even was labeled official goods, which is especially vexing because we spend more on our shirts to insure they are made in the USA from organic products, etc. In the case of bootlegs, this was not the case.

Most bands make their money touring. We cannot, because we all have jobs that support our families so touring is a rare event. We get shit about that too, but to get back on topic, there's nothing we can do about people stealing our music, I do take issue with people trying to justify it saying it's the cost. I'm sure they could skip a issue or two of Tiger Beat to buy the record and for those who want to save a few $ there's always iTunes. Then they only have to skip one issue :-P

You had originally said the lp was going to run $30, but wanted to charge $50.

That is correct. I think $50 would've been perfectly acceptable for the package we were planning.

Full 20 page 8 x 11 book on 100lb + stock matte finish full color
Gatefold cover sleeve with lyric sheet
Oversize color poster
Stickers

Vinyl is a luxury item. It costs more to produce, requires much higher resolution artwork so it takes longer to produce and the mastering process is quite expensive to get something good.

As of this time the vinyl version is postponed till we complete the second LP. We will likely be producing a double LP with LP 1 being Amber Gray and LP 2 being GridLink LP numero two :-D

"Amber gray" has the consistency of a full-length despite its timing.
You'll never be able to listen it to it just once in a row anyways! ALL HAILZ!

I agree with the vinyl being a luxury item. If you purely want the music and nothing else, there always is iTunes like you mentioned, and other methods to download the mp3s. If you want something tangible then a CD is perfectly acceptable. These days if you're going the extra distance to get vinyl then including additional perks such as those is a great idea.

I'm always willing to pay more for a vinyl version of an album I love but much of that extra money goes to getting much bigger artwork, posters, patches, gatefold art, inserts...etc included with the vinyl. I wouldn't expect all those additional things to be included but the pricing to remain the same as a download or a CD.

I completely agree with you. I'd rather pay $13 for 11 minutes of hard work and quality than $16.95 for a record with 18 half ass songs. In all honesty Amber Grey is the most intense 11 minutes of music I've heard.

Did you point out that it is almost 12 minutes of music? Seriously though, who in their right mind would complain about this masterpiece? You should revel in pissing them off.

Quality, not quantity.   Also, grind (with the DIY art sense) this quality hasn't come around much in the past 8 years or so.  If you're a fan of this sort of stuff, it's totally worth in and better than paying
$50 for something out of print on Ebay.

all I have to say Jon is that amber gray is one of the best grind records of the 2000's. And not to mentioned almost as good as John Hou(that album fucking blew my mind when I first heard it!) Anyway who cares what length of this goes for because the music on this disc fucking kills. I have played the cd constantly for 2 weeks and it hasn't gotten old. Thanks Jon I love you. You are one of my favorite Grindcore singers.

Joe Pesci - NEW SHIRTS AVAILABLE NOW.ALSO DEBUT CD

Hey Jon, i always find it funny when people bemoan length when it comes to fast music. People generally are fucking dicks, simple. When the Daugthers released Canada Songs they had the same backlash. For the most part these fucking idiots will be gone in the next few years, so fuck em anyways. AG is probably the best grind record this side of Inalienable Dreamless, which is a sad fact, as nothing has come close for sheer fast and brutality in the 10 years or so its release. Im not complaining though, hahaha. Hopefully will be over for MDF next year for Gridlink, as doubt i will ever get to see you guys in Europe/UK. Looking forward to the next record man.

Also great to see Steve in the camp. Jon, Steve, Witte....Maryland Deathfest????? hhhhmmmm. hehehe.
