Post Summer Festival is cancelled under pressure of the local authorities in Groningen city. I got a letter, signed by the mayor and aldermen that I've been forbidden to let the festival take place. Why?
About a month and a half ago there has been a pretty big festival in another squat in Groningen which totally went out of hand. They made agreements with the local authorities under which the festival was allowed and could take place. Instead of doing the things that were allowed, they broke almost all agreements and caused a lot of trouble for the local neighbours and the police weren't happy. This caused the local authorities to look out for things like that to happen and make it NOT happen anymore.
Last week I got a GO from the squatters at the Hoendiep in Groningen, so that the festival could take place. As you know it was uncertain before because of the situation with Eureka. But last week I found myself a decent squat in Groningen and I started to promote the festival as good as I could. This resulted in the fact that local authorities to come by at the squat because they feared there was another big festival going to take place and they didn't want the same thing to happen as what happened about a month and a half ago with the other squat. The Hoendiep-squatters explained that we have nothing to do with that other festival and that Post Summer Festival is being held on a much smaller scale with less drugs and noise etc. But it didn't help.
I received a letter from the local authorities that I can't let the festival take place unless I want to go to jail for 3 months or pay a sum of €3.700,-. Now who wants to do that? I ain't Scarface, remember? The letter explained the things a man needs to organise a festival legally and that it's too short day to maybe arrange things to let the festival take place in the end. The letter being signed by the mayor and alderman, it convinced me te cancell this first edition of the Post Summer Festival.
As you can understand, I'm very disappointed about this. Post Summer Festival was my summer plan. I've put a lot of effort, time and energy in it because I loved the concept and was really looking out to all the shows of the booked bands and artists. I could have chose to get a safe job and make money out of all the time I put in the festival but I didn't, because I have a passion that's different than earning money. I really enjoyed programming the festival, booking bands and promoting my baby, but it's not going to happen this year. Because I've promoted the festival so good that the mayor started to meddle in with it. Pretty original way to cancell a festival but I'm never going to let this happen again.
I'll try to arrange shows for the touring bands but I'm not to hopefull of the outcome, since I've contacted so many venues and squats for the festival already that had to say NO beforehand.
