Bruno watch the trailer

"This is the most important movie starring a gay Austrian since Terminator 2." is how 'Bruno' himself summed up Sacha Baron Cohen's eagerly awaited sequel to 'Borat', at last night's London Premiere.

The film is supposed to be HILARIOUS...  but some people don't seem to think so, with some gay activists expressing concern that Bruno reinforces gay stereotypes and could "potentially set back gains in equality for homosexuals." (Source: www.thecelebritycafe.com)

What do you think? Is 'Bruno' offensive, funny or both? Has Sacha Baron Cohen finally over stepped the 'crass' mark?

Bruno definately exaggerates some stereotypically gay mannerisms (but lets be honest plenty of people like Bruno exist) but the point is that in doing so he draws a response from the regular people he encounters.

He shows up the preconceptions and attitudes of the people -americans in this case- that he meets.  With Ali G it was the way he was not taken seriously and patronised for appearing poor or from street culture.

With borat it was attitudes to immigrants and archaic notions that foreigners are backward, stupid and bigoted.

Oh and its also pretty bloody funny to laugh at how people react to someone overly queer.

Noo. The guy is a legend. He's fearless. And, as an actor, he clearly knows how to stir people up.
Yes, he does take his stunts to the extreme, but at the end of the day...IT'S FAKE! Just like most of the movies made nowadays (unless they're based on a 'true story'). It's all in the name of controversy, isn't it! Just think, it's acting. Some dude (J Knoxville) made a movie of Jackass.

If some people are bothered by it, then that's their own problem, deal with it and wind your neck in, is all I have to say. After all, it's in the name of entertainment. There's a lot worse we're all dealing with these days.

It only really highlights what people make of stereotypes to be honest.

He's doing nothing wrong but make conservative people look like asses :D And I love him for it.

I just think he is an extremely intelligent person. He uses his charachters to show society its own faults. For example, he is has often been known to insult cambridge students and jews. He studied at cambridge and is jewish... He's not actually insulting anyone by saying these things, he just does it to show some of the shocking responses that the general public give back. I think he sees society in a way that more people ought to.

I think that good comedians will always cross that line / mark. Sacha Baron Cohen is just one of those many talented people who can cross that line with style!

These activits don't realise that they are only creating more publicity for the movie! Gay's with no sense of humour will set back gains in equality!

I think that it is how people react to the character that is funny. He manages to catch people off guard and bring out their faults in doing so. I think that's clever. Some people will say that his manipulation of his victims crosses the line, but he certainly weeds out the truly ignorant and bigoted for all to see.

Light-hearted and hilarious.

It's alright with an audience that can appreciate the humour.

It's just a shame that some people take it too offencively.

No way! If people think he's being homophobic then they've totally missed the point! He makes homophobes confront their problems and okay not change their views or anything but he shows them they're in the wrong and he does it in an intentionally over the top and exagerrated way which is the homophobes worst nightmare. I think he's brave for putting himself in the situations he does and although it may not be intention he does have the entertainment/political balance just right! Imagine if he teamed up with the writers of South Park?! They'd be unstoppable! Great comedic value/ entertainment and whether it was intentional or not a great political message about how people shouldnt be so homophobic or biased because of their fears. <3SBC<3

What do you mean by that? The man is hated by a lot of people in Kazakhstan who objected vehmently to the Borat movie. He upset a lot of American's - those that appeared in the film have tried to sue him. Now he has upset some of the Gay community. As Ali G he has already caused upset amongst the Blacks because they (the Blacks) say that Ali G takes from Black culture and urged people to boycot his Ali G Indahouse movie. They were right to boycot it as it was shit, but not for the stupid idea that Ali G is taking from Black culture. The main offender in the UK for taking from "Black culture" is Tim Westwood, which I believe Ali G is based on.

But kudos to Sacha Baron Cohen - if he's upsetting people then he's doing something right! If he weren't upsetting people there'd be no point to his comedy!

Any comedian who can expose the homophobia & racism of middle America is brilliant in my books.

Cohen's characters are brave in that he isn't afraid of putting himself on the line whilst making some potentially dangerous people very angry and so revealing their stupidity and narrow mindedness.

Not PC but very funny PN xxx

Typical gay activists whinging when there isn't a problem. Sacha Baron Cohen is hilarious, but I bet they are making out like he is Hitler or something. It's such a touchy thing this gay rights thing. I have asked a gay person if it is homophobic and they think it's ridiculous to say so. Gay activists are like feminists kickin up a fuss for no reason whatsoever. I can't actually wait to see that film, I just hope it's as good as Borat.

It can be funny, but then again he does a lot of his comedy at the expense of others which I can't agree with. There's pushing the boundaries and then there's going out and just insulting people. People will do anything if it makes money, and I'm afraid he's jumped on the bandwagon with so many others. Sorry Sacha!

Just like in Borat, Sacha has used a stereotype to make people react in a certain way.. sure its crude in both cases but that is kinda necessary to show how anti gay/foreigners a lot of everyday people are. Of course a lot of it is just pure ridiculous but if it were not so over the top it wouldn't be as evident that what he does is in jest. I think this film is aimed at raising awareness on some of the issues that gay people have to deal with in terms of people's preconceptions and reactions to homosexuality.

What happened to the days where we could enjoy things for what they are? Everyone is far too busy taking things way too seriously. What they need is a good laugh and that is what Bruno offers.

What Gay activists? So far there is not one comment on here that says that he has overstepped the mark. You are making an issue where there is not one. Plus there is no mark. Only one thats stated by other people who make a load of rules that they think you should live your life by. I mean we never actually ask the question, 'who cares if your offended?' do we? I certainly don't.

It's just like that whole Jonothan Ross/Russel Brand thing. There were 4 complaints on the day that happened and then a newspaper started ranting on about it and a few days later it was 10,000! (the fact she is in a porno band and screwed the biggest man whore on TV does of course bestow no blame at her feet. It was all those nasty comedians on the BBC)

Oh but don't worry people. You all have an informed unbias world view because you have such a responsible press who do not try to manipulate you into distraction from the bigger picture..........much like this blog really.

Watch zeitgeist addendum, America-from freedom to facism, The history of oil (Robert Newman), Bill Hicks, Richard Dawkins, Pat Condell and George Carlin. Read 1984, Brave new world and Animal farm.

Or you could always just stay in that cosy little media driven fear distarction bubble of yours.

Bruno looks to be just as funny as Ali G and Borat. It shows people up,  not because of what he does, but because of the way people react to it.

I would find it a lot more insulting to be thought of as Julian Clary or Alan Carr than Bruno, to be honest.

it doesnt hold back the progression for equal rights, its only playing on sterotypes that are already here its not a polictical piece of motion picture, it wont make a difference in society to how gay people are viewed,no one is going to change their views of gay rights based on this in a positive or negative way, comedy has to offend sometimes it doesnt go too far to offend basing that on any of my friends that are gay who dont have any problem with it

I don't think it seems all that offensive really, it's just silly humour with a lot of unnecessary nudity. Unfortunately, I'm strongly opposed to excessive nudity so that would be the only thing that could offend me. Either way, I don't think it's fair to persecute those who are easily offended, just like it's not right to persecute those who enjoyed/are going to enjoy the movie.

I'm not really entertained by "silly" humour, which is why I can't stand Jim Carrey. I'm going to give the film a watch but it'll probably be irritating by the first twenty minutes.

That said, I found Borat relatively amusing, until people started doing those terrible impressions. That's what I'm dreading for Bruno.

Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius. He has big balls and a massive heart. this film shows us the truth about how much some people hate gay people and how much violence and hostility we can still face. I work with young LGBT youth (www.sarahgrahamsolutions.com) who are abusing substances to deal with the bullying and shaming; and fear of not being accepted for who they are. This film will make people think. Well done.
