~ "Clarinet and Piano Piece" ~

Music:
Clarinet Sonata, Move 3

Composer:
Francis Poulenc

Performers:
Michael Collins - clarinet
Julien Quentin – piano

Notes:
copy/pasted from Wikipedia:

1) Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc....January 7, 1899 – January 30, 1963) was a French composer and a member of the French group Les Six. He composed music in all major genres, including art song, chamber music, oratorio, opera, ballet music, and orchestral music. Critic Claude Rostand, in a July 1950 Paris-Presse article, described Poulenc as "half monk, half delinquent" ("le moine et le voyou"), a tag that was to be attached to his name for the rest of his career.

2) Francis Poulenc's Sonata for clarinet and piano dates from 1962 and is one of the last pieces he completed. The piece is dedicated to the memory of an old friend, the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, who like Poulenc had belonged to the group of "Les Six." A typical performance takes about 13 minutes

3) The third movement, "Allegro con fuoco," energetically combines various nimble, articulate, and rhapsodic themes, bookended by a delightfully clownish tune—a mixture of serious and silly that well represents Poulenc's oeuvre as a whole.

4) Michael Collins' dazzling virtuosity and sensitive musicianship have made him one of today's most sought-after soloists.

5) French pianist Julien Quentin....His remarkable depth of musicianship and distinct clarity of sound coupled with flawless technique, make him an artist in demand as both soloist and chamber musician.

Thank You Michael for the delightful and interesting Polenc tonight. One of my daughters favorites I must say. Strange how her favorites have remained in my memory. Surely her having practiced his works upon our piano here at home and upon my ears also keeps this fresh in my memory. Bless her for her discipline and the joys and pain that came at times also. With so much gratitude Michael. Your Maricet
