Wanda Sykes: Declaring Herself Gay, After Feeling 'Attacked' By Proposition 8

By Karu F. Daniels, BlackVoices.com

Wanda Sykes
has come out of the closet and is proudly stating that she is, indeed, "proud to be gay."

The acclaimed comedienne and star of the CBS sitcom, 'The New Adventures of Old Christine,' spoke her truth during a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.

"You know, I don't really talk about my sexual orientation," the Emmy Award winner said. "I didn't feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,".. --> START SWF PUBLISHER Module: 267995 -->
.. -->"Everybody that knows me personally they know I'm gay," she continued. "But that's the way people should be able to live their lives."

The motivation behind the revelation: the Nov. 4 passage of a same-sex marriage ban in California that has took the nation by storm.

Sykes aid the ban (also known as California's Proposition 8) made her feel like she was "attacked."

"Now, I gotta get in their face," she said. "I'm proud to be a woman. I'm proud to be a black woman, and I'm proud to be gay."

According to the 'Associated Press,' Sykes' appearance at the Las Vegas rally surprised organizers.

One person who was not so surprised, but was, indeed, elated was Terrance Dean, author of the best-selling memoir, 'Hiding In Hip Hop,' who said he is proud to see a black celebrity come out of the closet.

"How brave and courageous for a black celebrity to finally come out," Dean said. "What so many in Hollywood are afraid to do, especially blacks, Wanda Sykes has taken a step forward. This is a milestone of firsts in our community of black celebrities who will be coming out."

The popular motivational speaker and gay rights activist's provocative and explosive memoir discussed the down low life of many celebrities, rappers, and actors who live secret double lives.

Dean may have been prophetic, too.

"I have been saying that within the year a major celebrity will be coming out. In my book, Hiding In Hip Hop, I have discussed many celebrities who live secret lives and how we in the entertainment industry know, but the public is unsuspecting. Wanda has taken a giant step and trust me, others will be following."

Proposition 8 to Ban Gay marriage is a joke. What if there was a proposition to ban African Americans from being able to get married??? Everyone would have a fit right? This should no even be a state issue. I think it is horribl that the states think they can limit the rights of certain minority groups in certain states. Thats EXACTLY  what they did to black people in he 1960's in the south. They felt segregation was a STATE  issue and that they had the right to limit the rights of black people in certain states. Its wrong. Its exactly what this country wasnt suppose to represent. Gay people have the right to the legal contract of marriage and the legal contract of divorce. That is the opinion of this blog writer...

And do not DARE to post any of your cult-born again christian bullshit. God didnt teach HATE!

Your thoughts???

Who is shocked? Who thought this was breaking news? I agree that everyone has rights but I don't whole-heartedly agree with gay marriage. I think they making marriage too much of a joke with quick divorce, pre-nups, & lastly gay marriage. The bond was to be shared between a man and a woman, as in biblical days! How can you say going against the bible is a law? But to each's own!

Ooooooooh, howyoudoin'!!1!

LOL.

But seriously, Wendy. I knew she liked the chicks ever since her show "Wanda At Large". She seemed to enjoy the way her character expressed waaaay too much anger at her male co-star and arch-nemesis a little too much on the show.

Wonder if she'll still have a job on "The New Adventures of Old Christine"....hopefully so.

Love it! I'm so glad that she (and others) are standing up against Prop H8.

Also, I'm a black lesbian myself and I'm glad she had the courage to publicly come out!

(And congrats to her on her marriage!)

Good for her!

As for Prop 8...what a farce! We talk about marriage like it's something higher than the highest, however the same people who are against gay marriage are the same people who have raised the divorce rate to 65%! I know more gay people with lasting relationships than straight married people!

Who cares the sexual orientation. I know I don't ask everyone I know what they do in their bedroom. So why do we have to make it the center of marriage?

i agree with the first comment...move the fuck outta cali then. I've talked marriage with my lover but at the end of the day marriage does not say we love each other any more or less than we do.

I never knew that Wannda was in the closet. She always came off as the black version of Ellen to me. I don't see what's the big deal....She's a great comedian and if she choose to eat snatch then that's her thing.

I can't hate or say anything about people who loves a person of the same sex, the way that I see it at least they have found each other, life is so short and to have some great person who loves you for you is what life is about. Love should never be against the law!!!

How you doin!! What do you say to the ones that say they are gay, and sleep with women and men?And have children by the men they sleep with, but they tell you I'm gay. It's sad when you can't be true to one self thats why a lot of them can't be true to others. I can out somebody that you hires to do comedy, but I wont do that to that person. If you are proud of what and who you are it shouldn't be a sceret the bottom line!!!!!

I am a bi-sexual woman. (I'm not confused. I'm just lucky enough to be able find love and intimacy in a man or a woman). And, if I fell in love with a woman and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, I most certainly would want to MARRY her...

HOWEVER...to compare the lives of our ancestors (African Slaves) and the continuing struggle of the African American in the US to the rights of gays is dead wrong. I see no analogy between the two.

Finally, (dancing in my chair)

Go Wanda! Go Wanda!

Now let's see when Queen Latifah will come out. Anybody remember her dating Monifah years ago?

What?

Wow that's awesome. It's especially important when a black woman comes out of the closet. It gives hope to the younger generations of black lesbians, queers, and gays especially those living in black communities that heavily promote heterosexuality and homophobia is the norm. Any proposition designed to deny human rights is ridiculous.

I personally don't think that GAY MARRIAGE is a JOKE!
The Str8 folx are the ones who are marrying quickly and having these very public divorces.
The Divorce rate is very high in hollywood and everywhere else.

So don't call it a JOKE, and then try to add Gay Marriage to that list!
I am proud that Wanda stepped up to the plate to declare that she's GAY, perhaps this will start a trend for other DL celebs (especially black and latino) to follow suit.

I'm just a little DJ from Detroit, who has been around a few major markets and have seen the many down low celebs (black), who ppl don't suspect are gay.

I'm GAY also and I'm proud of who I am, I am successful and I am not a JOKE, nor do I believe our community has to answer to a state or government dictatorship who can take our tax paying dollars, but we can't have the same benefits as everyone str8 when it comes to our relationship.

GO WANDA!!!

I'm glad that Wanda came out. The problem with the entire issue about Proposition 8 and all the other amendments in regards to gay rights is that they are based in personal religious beliefs. However, the government said decades ago that church and state should be separated, therefore, there is no legal reason to keep gay people from being married.

I'm a heterosexual black single mother and let me tell you, I believe in gay rights because they are about EQUAL rights. Love thy neighbor, and all that. Gay people pay taxes, own property and vote...but they can't get married?!?

If we don't fight today, then tomorrow, it could be YOUR rights or MY rights. You don't have to necessarily run with gay people to respect their rights to live, love and just BE.

Remember, many of us minorities are one missed signature away from not having a right to do something.

MARRIAGE IS A UNION BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN ORDAINED BY GOD FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF PROCREATION AND COMPANIONSHIP. Thats how I see it and I stand for that. I believe each individual can only act according to their conviction. I see most people in this "new age" trance want to have their cake and eat it in life with no morals or scruples... no accountability to anyone. YA'LL JUST WANNA DO AS YOU PLEASE. GUARANTEED THERE IS A PRICE TO PAY FOR ALL THIS... GET RIGHT GET RIGHT!!!!

thats your belief....thats note was marriage is from a legal stand point....remember....there is a separation of church and state in this country, the basic foundation that our country was founded on...you cannot put the two issues together no matter how religous u are

Giving homosexuals the right to marry and enjoy full rights as American citizens has no bearing on your personal life.

Some of you bible thumpers have an unhealthy obsession with other peoples lives.

If your house was in order, the church's divorce rate would not be higher than the secular rate. If your house was in order, the church would not have teen pregnancies. If your house was in order, then you wouldn't have preachers pimping the gullible women and seniors. If your house was in order, then you wouldn't have preachers on drugs and raping parishioners. If your house was in order, you wouldn't have people living double lives. If your house was in order, jheri curl would be out of business.

If your house was in order, then you would be morally perfect. You aren't! So get over yourselves and find something better to do with your time than point fingers at everybody else.

Use the three fingers pointing back at yourself and improve your living conditions or go play with yourselves. Some of you are the most sexually repressed people I have ever met.

GO WANDA--I MYSELF AM A FAG HAG WHICH MAY SOUND BAD TO THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE TERM BUT IT MEANS I LOVE GAY PPL. AND THAT COULD SOUND BIAS TOO-BUT ITS GOOD BIAS. I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY GAY MARRIAGE IS SO TABOO OR HOW PEOPLE SEE IT AS "REDEFINING" WHAT MARRIAGE MEANS--IT IS A COMMITMENT FOR PEOPLE TO EACH OTHER--AND IT MAY MEAN SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO EVERYONE. I DON'T FEEL JEOPARDIZED BY OTHER PEOPLES RELATIONSHIPS. ITS REALLY NONE OF MY BUSINESS HOW OTHER PEOPLE RELATE, JUST AS MUCH AS ITS NONE OF ANYONES BUSINESS HOW I GO ABOUT HANDLING MY MARRIAGE. EQUAL RIGHTS MEANS IN EVERY WAY FOR EVERYONE. SOME RIGHT WINGERS ARE SO OFFENSIVE IN THEIR VIEWS. I ALSO SUPPORT GAY ADOPTION.

Word? Wow I never gave it any thought that she might be but okay.I know it's different for different people, some folks "come out" because they want to be free to hold thier partner's hand or kiss in public and some do it to satisfy friends and family who edge them on to just admit it,but like wanda said herself she never felt the need to and that's how life should go. 'Cause really who gives a fuck what color jay leno's wife's draws was this morning?!Maybe I should've used a better example but you know what I'm sayin'. If I were a celeb. I wouldn't tell nobody nothing until they shared some "dirt" of there own with me first.Fuck that nobody puts baby in a corner! LOL!Naw I'm just serious.

That was the furthest thing from my mind. I really don't understand why anyone has to come out to anyone. Do heterosexual announce to the world they are heterosexual? Conversely, all human beings have one thing in common and that is to live their lives. I'm sure she feel freer and now that she understood the power behind being transparent, she can now be herself and the rest of the world. I agree with the above mention thoughts ofon the issue segregation. It is indeed wrong for the alleged religious majority to dictate their religious tenets on those who do not believe in their views. The irony of this ban is that the allege religious few who attend church in the name of God, are just as sinful as the sin they try to ban. I say let freedom ring, for gay, transgender, lesbian and most importantly for mankind. If indeed, "All men are created equal, the in the spirit of freedom and freewill, everyone should marry whomever he/she chooses. Stupid and ignorant people contributed to many people living unhappy lives all in the name of organized religion, but people are becoming more conscious and with that the right to be happy should not trump religious hypocritical views.

Humm...I kinda sorta understand what you're sayin (I hope) , its not that she "had" to come out and say it, I'm thinking because she is a celebrity and people were speculating or found out she got married she was like "FUCK IT IM GAY", Wanda has never been the type to care what someones says (in my opinion). But kudos who cares....IT IS WHAT IT IS....
