WINTRYFROST started in 2009 as the project of Giorgio Orani,
who’s been the former lead guitarist and songwriter in the Italian
Gothic Metal band SO COLD. With this project, he wants to blend the
sound of some of his favourite bands to create a unique new one out of
it, and the self-titled demo holds the first sonic results.
The
basic ingredients of the WINTRYFROST sound are a solid drum fundament,
strong melody work, and the fury of rocking guitar riffs. The intro
track, however, bears just a little of that, as it’s rather stressing
the melodic side which is sometimes of an epic, almost soundtrack-like
nature. But the next track ‘My Magdalene’ would be an ornament for the
repertoire of any Goth Rock formation with its longing keys, strings,
and a straight arrangement. The same thing goes for the two songs ‘Safe
in the End’ and ‘Save these Words’. With ‘Martyrs’, the tempo is
dropping a little for once, and the used choir sound sends some little
shivers down the spine.
The instrumental
compositions leave a good impression, even though the drumming could be
a little sharper and clearer. Usually I’m all for instrumental stuff,
but here I really miss the vocals as I think they would enhance the
sound a lot. But I heard there are some collaborations planned for the
not too distant future.
