Just got issue 68 of Maverick magazine and read their rather nice review of our debut album "The Life I’ve Had". Here’s what they had to say...
"Scottish blend of Americana that is irresistible for a good ol’ shindig.
Though they’re Scottish, Americana’s wide idiomatic range proves perfect for the material featured on The Scuffers debut album, a disc that billboards the playing, vocal and writing talents of Gavin Wallace and his cohorts Ian Fraser (Bass), John Murphy (Drums), Dochan MacMillan (Banjo, mandolin, dobro) and Sara Cull (Fiddle, harmony vocals). They are clearly devotees of many styles, among them traditional Country, rockabilly, skiffle, folk and rock ’n’ roll. But they don’t so much mix and match these as use different ones for the foundation of each original. You’ve got troubles on your mind for instance is driving rockabilly, while Dear Stranger and Goin’ with the flow hearken back to hardcore Honky Tonk and Country, and The Last Dance and 6AM balance folk and country. doesn’t break new ground but for scuffling around the dance floor at a Saturday night shindig it’s just about the perfect mix".
Rather pleased with that. One point to note, is that the main Harmony Vocals were provided by ex-Scuffer and fantastic harmony singer, Rebecca McChesney. Additional instrumentation was provided by Alastair Taylor (pedal steel and accordian) of Edinburgh alt.country/power pop band Dropkick and Danny Mitchell (mandolin) who engineered the album and is an all round great guy.
