Current mood:  pleased
NO it never snowed in July, NO money doesnt just materialize over a dinning table in a local restrurant, NO there is no Blue fairy who bestows magickal powers, and NO for Christ's sake the fabled sword of excalibre is still lost in time and NOone has to date found it....lol Those who like to appear white light should not pull guns on students, should not curse the police, should not rip off various business, partners proof can be found in various court house papers, and those who follow people that do this should keep their mouths shut and stop rubber stamping the insipid "leaders" behaviors.A dying breed of hypocritical parasites will soon be gone.
I have spoken.... It is done.

To those who whine, get a life! There are very few in Salem who adhere to the fabled interpetations of clouded wicca poo fluff bunny bullshit anymore. Here's the deal, Most witches love the green faced witch, as she has paid for her legacy in blood. The inverted pentacle is OUR STAR when we want to glory in the flesh, draw in money, have animalistic sexual fun we use it's powers. It is also a symbol of Mastery of Material world thus enabling the real witch to be more effective in the working of their craft. Are you willing to suffer to learn?
And as far as the word Warlock goes, I as a male will not let an old guard of bra burning feminatzis who hate the thought of any man with power hold a title. Take away a persons name and you steal their soul. Male witches like it ,or not , are Here to stay and are indeed oath breakers against the dogmas and rituals of the Christian church...And I am goddamned proud of this.... It is our true hertiage. I personally have broken almost every oath that a man could make to the church and will continue to do so as their rules and oaths do not apply to me at all....not christian. lol
The woman folk took the word WITCH and cleaned it up and now the Men folk like it or not are doing the same for the word used to describe them! This is how is goes in Salem now!
Deal with it... A New Salem is Here!
Read on to educate yourselves

1. The Witches of Salem love the image of the Green Faced Witch.

Halloween Witch
Author Unknown

Each year they parade her about, the traditional Halloween Witch.

Misshapen green face, stringy scraps of hair, a toothless mouth beneath her deformed nose. Gnarled knobby fingers twisted into a claw protracting from a bent and twisted torso that lurches about on wobbly legs. Most think this abject image to be the creation of a prejudiced mind or merely a Halloween caricature. I disagree, I believe this to be how Witches were really seen.

Consider that most Witches were women, were abducted in the night, and smuggled into dungeons or prisons under the secrecy of darkness to be presented by light of day as a confessed Witch. Few if any saw a frightened normal looking woman being dragged into a secret room filled with instruments of torture, to be questioned until she confessed to anything suggested to her and to give names or what ever would stop the questions.

Crowds saw the aberration denounced to the world as a self-proclaimed Witch. As the Witch was paraded through town en route to be burned, hanged, drowned, stoned or disposed of in various other forms of Christian love all created to free and save her soul from her depraved body, the jeering crowds viewed the results of hours of torture. The face bruised and broken by countless blows bore a hue of sickly green. The once warm and loving smile gone replaced by a grimace of broken teeth and torn gums that leers beneath a battered disfigured nose. The disheveled hair conceals bleeding gaps of torn scalp from whence cruel hands had torn away the lovely tresses. Broken twisted hands clutched the wagon for support, fractured fingers with nails torn away locked like groping claws to steady her broken body. All semblance of humanity gone this was truly a demon, a bride of Satan, a Witch.

I revere this Halloween Crone and hold her sacred above all. I honor her courage and listen to her warnings of the dark side of man. Each year I shed tears of respect when the mundane exhibit their symbol of Christian love.

2. The Witches of Salem wear the inverted Pentcales, and work magic for self gain.

Meaning of the Inverted Pentacle:
The inverted (or upside down) pentacle is a symbol of some reputation. It is typically associated with Satanism, though that is not a completely accurate description. The true emblem of the Church of Satan is the sigil of Baphomet, which is a symbol with a goat's head and an inverted pentacle. Within the world of witchery, the upside down pentacle stands for the 2nd degree in some traditions, suffering through the mundane to learn, and most importantly the presueing of worldly goods and power which in turn give the true witch more clout in the real world.

3. Men of The Witchs of Salem can call themselves Warlocks. ( as we are not all pussy whipped LOL)

The Warlock and our definition of him, has been correctly pointed out, the Oxford English Dictionary that defines the Warlock as a traitor or oathbreaker, and this is certainly true in two ways:

1. The term is Old English, and derives from about 600CE, which is when the monks were writing the books we now use as reference. There are no prizes for guessing why these Pagan terms were less than endearing. Any one who would not accept the new and true faith of Christianity was evil and dangerous. By equating those who did not accept the faith with evil, the new lords had the enemy firmly sighted. The old gods became the new devils, and the followers of the old ways were heretics and worshipers of demons. To follow the old ways was dangerous and guarded with secrecy. The Witches and Warlocks became separate from the general population, and followed their own paths.
(Note : notice wiccans think it is ok to clean up the word witch here and give her a new face but not it not so for our men who indentify themselves as warlock to do the same thing. Fuck you Gloria Steinham!) lol

Again as has been correctly pointed out, the breaking of an oath was of extreme impo
rtance at a time when a man's word was his bond. The making of an oath was done with great care and consideration. When faced with the annihilation of his tribe by the conquerers, the Chief has historically taken the option of surrender to preserve the clan or tribe. An oath taken by the clan leader for the surrender and saving of his people would only be broken in great reverence by the younger men of the tribe. Thus the term oathbreaker would be one of respect amongst the tribe, as these men left to fight against their conquerers. An example of this is Chochise who surrendered to the US Cavalry so that the women and children would be saved, but allowed the young warriors to leave under the leadership of his most able follower, Geronimo. However, what most people ignore (or are simply unaware of) is that the definition of oathbreaker is NOT the only reference to the Warlock, and indeed the Complete Oxford Dictionary has considerably more information.

A Warlock is also used to mean a cairn or pile of stones (in Scandinavian regions) which apparently served as beacons (lighthouses) or as markers of territory. Another use of the term meant that a man "warlocked" was magically immune to wounds inflicted by certain weapons (commonly iron), which developed into the idea of being War-lucked.

Lastly the term meant "to bar against hostile invasion". So a warlocked nation was one which was protected (by Warlocks) against invasion, rather than being embroiled in a war inside its territory. ( Sorry Laurie, no more causing divisions and manufactoring fractions within our community , as we will from now on call you out on it)

It must be acknowledged that much of research has shown that the Warlock was a warrior whose lifestyle was frequently violent and short. It is easy to either glorify his acts of valour, or accuse him of being a thug, revelling in bloodshed. What is more difficult is to recognise the middle path between extremes, and recognise that in the "Good Old Days" life was extraordinary difficult and frequently short; that violence was a way of life and death. Men and Women had very different roles to those of today, and indeed that may be good reason in itself to repudiate the idea of the Warlock. But I believe that in those days men and women were more secure in their roles. Women ran the household and indeed frequently were the owners of the land. Women probably had more power and control over their lives than they do now.

Since Christianity women have lost their land, their rights, their magic and their voice. Even today women have not regained what was previously theirs by right. Men were put into the position of controlling the land and all it contained. Remember the land given to the Christian Church was frequently given by the women, and that the Abbeys were often run by women. Only after the restructure of the Church did women lose all this to become the subjugated nuns to the religion they helped set up. The ones who did keep what was theirs became the Witches, and continued to heal, teach and act as midwives in the more isolated areas. As is happening in Nicaragua at the moment, the Witches were attacked for fulfilling the role which was theirs. In 20th centurt Nicaragua Witches are being taxed, ridiculed and oulawed because of the power and prestige they hold in the community (and because they are cheaper and more effetive than the "modern" doctors!).

We must recognise that the Witch and the Warlock are very old terms which have been tampered with by people with a vested interest in doing so. History is always written by the victor, but we have the opportunity to question and change peoples' attitudes towards us. We are Witches, and should not change our name because of outsiders' opinions. We have all - Witch and non-Witch alike - been subjected to 1000 years or so of negative influence. Now we have learnt the reality of Witchcraft, and take pride in it. If we refuse to acknowledge the name Witch, we accept that what has been written is true. The same holds for Warlock; just as there are some very dubious people misusing the words Witchcraft and Witch, so there are also people debasing the word Warlock. A Warlock is not some plonker doing ritual sacrifice and devil worship any more than is a Witch. Rather he is some one trying very hard to come to terms with his own inherent powers as a man. By denying him this right we deny all of the Craft their rights to work their craft in balance.

The important thing to me personally about this whole issue of Warlocks can be summed up as:

1. Whatever the word and its origin, the reality is how we use it now. Many words have changed their meanings over the years to become something totally different from the original.
2. Warlocks did exist.
3. Warlocks are not all satanists or figments of Hollywood any more than are Witches.
4. Being a Warlock is a legitimate title for a male Witch.
5. Witches and Warlocks are traditionaly outside of general society and each have their own special brands of magic, neither being inherently good or evil.
For Witches to denegrate Warlocks as evil or deluded is very dangerously like using the same dogma that is trotted out by the fundamentalists. No-one can afford to point fingers or throw stones at each other.

And lastly for those who like pigeon holing people: I am proud to be an initiated Wiccan; a Priest of the religion; a Pagan; a Witch; and very much also a Warlock.

Bravo Shawn! As a fellow "Warlock" and Practitoner of The Craft...this has needed to be said for quite sometime now and it's High Time that the General Wiccan Populace acknowledges we Warlocks as not only part of thier Communities...but as your research states (as well as mine also) we've been around for a very long time and we're NOT going to go away due to the uneducated whims of many Modern Wiccans!

Thank you Brother!!

Best Wytches~

Btw..Thank you Sean for this recent research on the now emerging various etimology (or more properly...Philology) of the term "Warlock" (and I commend you Sean! I personaly enjoyed the additional information) might I also present to the following from my own (as well as a couple of others) research of the term "Warlock!"

Also...btw might I have your permision to add this information to my own essay (of which is the following below) on my Website?

Regardless of what the "Fluffbunny" or "Twinkie" Wiccans say...we WARLOCKS have not only been around since time immemorial...but were HERE TO STAY!!

~MstrMacabre Hexen~

"Reclaiming the Word WARLOCK!

Much like the term "Wicca" which comes from the root term "Wicce"and means "to bend," or "to shape." NOT "The Wise" or "Wise Ones" that has been continuously circulated around the Metaphysical Community by many misinformed Wiccans and Neo-Pagans for years, the word Warlock has befallen the same gross misrepresentation.

Contrary to current popular belief, Warlock does NOT mean an "Oath-Breaker" in "Scottish" as again many Neo-Pagans and Wiccan's will tell you (of which they get from the Old English and later Colonial Witch Hunter's jargon) but in fact it is a derivative from the High German word "Ward-lokkur" (BTW...W is pronounced V in german) meaning "Spell-Caster" for Enchanter or Sorcerer, much the same as the German word "Hexen" which just means "Witch" or the Old English "Wizard!" It is generally applied to a "Male Witch" who practices some form of Magick usually in the Nature of Conjuration or Sorcery....thus, the reason for it's application as a definition for the Male gendered Witch in "Pop Culture" society today!

As 'Runewolf' states in his article "Warlock: The Other 'W-Word':

"We have all heard the explanation that a "Male Witch" must never be referred to as a Warlock because the word means "oath-breaker" or "traitor" or some such. However, this is from the same folks who insist that we must ignore any dictionary or encyclopedia entries that give a less-than-favorable definition for the word "Witch." Why can't this logic be applied to "Warlock?" Many entries indicate that the primary definition of "Warlock" is, indeed, a "male Witch" or sorcerer. Only the secondary or archaic definitions - if they are present at all - have anything to do with oath-breaking. In addition, there are several excellent arguments currently at large on the Internet regarding possible alternate etymologies of the word that trace it back to an Old Norse term for enchanter or sorcerer, "vard-lokkur." This alternate origin for the word "Warlock," and hence the rightful priority of its positive meaning, is becoming more accepted - or at least more publicised - within our Internet community, to judge from even a cursory Google search.

Matthew Sandow speculates that what we think of as Witchcraft might originally have involved both Male and Female Mysteries, and that much of what we think of as "Wicca" today descends predominantly from the Female Mysteries. The Male Mysteries, on the other hand, would have had more to do with hunting and warfare, and that the "War" in "Warlock" refers to just that - the Way of the Warrior and the arts of "battle-magic," as exemplified by the ulfhednar and berserkers. This only further enthralls me, as I consider myself to practice a "Warrior" Tradition of the Craft, and have long felt the need for a specific term for "Warrior Witch." Given the possible history of the word, "Warlock" seems to fit that bill quite nicely."
--- Runewolf

Shawn, you make great points, but maybe one you overlooked is that...You can not have just Female, there has to be a male, a ying and yang, a positive and negative, a "black" and "white".....You can not be all good or all bad, there has always got to be a balance.

Personally, I like the way Salem and Witchcraft is heading, a new direction for the new generation. I see great things happening now and I am more than sure that there are greater things to come.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing a rising star out of the ashes of fiction....snow in July and money falling from the sky!!!! PLEASE!!! I have heard those stories first hand and I know who and what you are talking about.

Witch, Warlock, Wizard, Wiccan, Pagan or other, it's all the same thing....follow the old religion and make it work for you.

One more thing, what is all of this hoop~la about not using "magick" for personal gain? Isn't that what it's for? You shape and change the energies around you to better yourself and your life....wouldn't you call that "personal gain"?

I love your blog and there is so much more to say, but then I'd be blogging!!! LOL

Love Ya,
Angela

The hat is off to you MY FAVORITE WARLOCK!  I also throw another "word" into this arena of word mongering; SHAMAN (Shawn, you are truly a Shaman as well, please add that title after your name)!  People reading this BLOG should look into the many definitions of that word and see the synonym with WARLOCK.  You will then appreciate the respect these MEN deserve.

However, considering all we have been through as Witches and Warlocks (or people who live by magick) why should any of us get caught up in words?  I think about the magick that I do (some would approve and some would not).  Some would love to slap some names on it and say "she is not following the rede".  HOOWEY!!  I do what is right for me.  I practice from within.  I learn every day and many times I am surprised by the results.  At the end of the day whatever name you want to throw my way it still boils down to this; I AM A WITCH!

The Witches of Salem have put much on the line, personally, to publically ensure equal treatment for ALL religious followings.  They have also opened up their city and their ways to fellowship with ALL.  As an open Witch, I stand proudly next to the Warlock, and share the alter with him!

BLESSINGS my friend.....

Who more proud than we to be called WARLOCK!  I have never cared for the pleasant home spun wiccan concept of Witch. Powerless christian apologist with a karmic chain around their necks always trying to sell the good side of witchcraft.  NEVER! I remain an enemy of the rightious, a perverter of virtue and a practioner of the Black Arts..... and I remain the Engine of Karma.........perhaps in a past life you have earned my ire, deserve my hatred or maybe just maybe I do what I will despite the petty fears of psuedo-christian sun-dress wearing yeast farmers who's entire lifes goal is to castrate men and kill real magic

Excellent!!  Quite frankly, I've never gotten used to calling men "witches" and I've never understood why people have such a negative connotation of the word "warlock".  I"ve always thought it was a beautiful word and something to be proud of.

You are always the one person who doesn't make me regret my Wiccan background!  You have the charm & power to broker a new age, not a  "can't we all get along," but instead something more meaningful---an understanding that the "craft" is a craft, religion is religion, and NO ONE has a monopoly on the word "WITCH." I am proud to know you.

and, for that, I will turn back the clock 16 years or so and sign with my old name-------

It takes a strong and wise man to break down barriers, and I feel so pleased to know that you are on top of it in your magical city!  At the end of the day, magic is magic, there is no "light" and "dark", there is simply will... and recognizing the power within, rather than concerning oneself with trivial "good and bad" is the only true way to fulfill any magicians potential.

Do what you do best... INSPIRE  the opening of eyes, and shove down those doors!  The world is a better place for the effort.

and who but Krow Klaws should honor the title Witch King.   You are the "Lords of Salem" I know that it is you and the rightfull heirs to the forsaken throne that are the motivation and inspiration for Rob Zombies ode to Salem on "Educated Horses" c.d.

Is it not a title earned? a title that must be won.  The world knows of Mysterious Salem now through the Festival of the Dead and that alone crowns the king.  I and my vast group of associates only see Warlock Krow Klaws and his coven/cabal/grotto as the harbingers of taste, style and magic emanating from the Witch City.  While others paw the earth and bellow at the uncaring sky, Shawn and Christian et all have bridged the gaps between all Witches.  Pagan ,Wiccan, Satanist Solo, Green Witch, Herbalist ,Psychic and on and on all are welcome all are respected and all should tip the brim of their respective pointy hats to the LORD OF SALEM

I'm very interested in seeing at how this all plays out, as Salem is truly one of the centers of the neo-pagan community. I have refrained from calling myself a witch because, though most of my beliefs lay in pagan customs and the rituals of our most ancient civilizations, I never wanted to be associated with what the general conception of most Wiccans and neo-paganism.  I don't believe in the almost singular focus on goddess symbols, as to me the truly divine is beyond mere x and y chromosones.  While I believe in responsible behavior, I always felt like so much of the focus of most Wicca turned it's back on the essential duality of our world.  For a community that claims to embrace the natural world, it often seemed to me that it so often refused to embraced the whole of nature, light and dark, male and female power, life and death.  (To quote David Cross  "Ok, now, where are the unicorns?").  In other words, where one such as myself would hope to find community, I've found only alienating dogma and have thus kept my spiritual world to my own secular humanist-Jungian-pagan musings and have never truly explored what participating in a community of pagans can mean.  I'm still on the fence as to what I refer to myself as and if I feel like there is a place for my sort of spiritual pragmatism in this world;  but since I met you folks and observed your absolute dedication to kicking out at the pricks, I (and probably many others) are more willing to be open to it's possibilities.  I often marveled at how both of you use your talents at absolute sensationalism and exploitation to not only make waves, make profits and make fun, but in your own deliciously convoluted fashion, further an honest and true spiritual agenda.  I love you long time.
