The region's most important music convention, SOUTH WEST SOUND 2007 starts on Wednesday 25th April.  If you haven't already booked your place act now!

South West Sound 07 is the 4th Annual Regional Music Convention, offering inspiration and networking, careers and business advice for those working in all areas and genres of music.  This event is relevant to everyone working in music education and the music industry, at any stage of their career.

Wednesday 25th April

Day 1:  Engaging Through Music

Colston Hall

Full Rate: £40.  Member Rate: £30.   Concession (Students/OAP's/Unemployed): £20

The opening day of South West Sound 2007 will explore how music can engage people of all ages through education and participation. There will be demonstrations and examples of good practice and innovative approaches to working in both formal and informal settings.  The symposium will provide great networking and development opportunities for music teachers, community musicians, music leaders and key organisations working in this area of the industry.   The one day course today is 'Fresh approaches for the experienced community musician'. Some bursary places have become available for this day.

Billy Bragg, Pete Moser (More Music in Morecombe), Colin Brackley Jones and Kathryn Deane (joint chairs of the co-ordination strand of Music Manifesto), Marc Jaffrey (Music Manifesto) representatives from the Youth Music Action Zones, Music Service and Arts Education Partnerships, Abigail D'Amore (Musical Futures), Jack Kingslake (Hello Interactive), Cliff Manning from NUMU.    The course on this day will be 'Fresh Approaches for the Experienced Community Musician'.

Thursday 26th April

Day 2:  Music Industry Uncovered

Colston Hall

Full Rate: £40.   Member Rate: £30.   Concession (Students/OAP's/Unemployed): £20.

Day 2 of SWS 07 will examine the music industry at entry and intermediate level. The day will provide a comprehensive overview of current practices and activities within the music industry, providing first-rate advice on career paths, gaining work experience and employment within the industry and further developing an existing career in music. Issues such as the rapidly evolving digital world, accessing live performance, plus setting up a record label will be explored. Music Industry support and trade organisations will present on their ongoing work.  The one day course today is about how to set up a record label.

Friday 27th April                                               

Day 3:  Commercial Realities Today

Dartington Hall

Full Rate: £80.   Member Rate: £50.   Concession (Students/OAP's/Unemployed): £40. 

South West Sound 07 will move to Dartington for Day 3. In association with Music Week, experts will explore aspects of current music industry practice at a higher level. These will include songwriting and song placement, copyright, music production, the live music industry and innovative approaches to programming, plus international sales and accessing overseas markets.  The one day course today will be on running a record label.

Saturday 28th April

Day 4:  Music Education to Music Industry

Dartington Hall

Full Rate: £80.   Member Rate: £50.   Concession (Students/OAP's/Unemployed): £40. 

The final day of SWS 07 brings strands from the previous days together. Day 4 will comprehensively explore the relationship between music education, music educators and the music industry. Current national agendas will be presented and discussed, ongoing and future practice will be examined, examples of effective partnerships and project delivery between educators and industry will be demonstrated, and the role of education and industry will be scrutinised to determine the success of each in developing the talent of the future across all aspects of music. Some bursary places have become available for this day.
