It's Not My Fault - I was Drunk!

Most of you will have seen this story now, but for those who haven't:

Philip Laing

Or for those who can't be arsed to read, basically some student got pished out of his head on an organised night out, fell asleep in the street in front of a shop, then woke up, went over to the local war memorial and urinated all over the poppies and wreaths and stuff.

Lots of people are calling for his head to be stamped on in front of the Queen, whilst others are of the 'He was just pissed!' opnion.

OK, so it's shockingly disrespectful, but no REAL harm was done.  He just pissed on a bit of stone with flowers on.

What???  Hang on, hang on - hear me out!

Now you know I'm a fan of Draconian punishment.  Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.  I HATE how our 'justice' system lets people off so lightly if they're obviously bad or dangerous, and yet otherwise good people get utterly fucked for driving too fast on a safe and clear road.

This fucking idiot deserves to be punished, but I think if he is then they will just make an example of him because he's got the Old Codgers up in arms.  He deserves punishment for that - but this is hardly the sort of case where I would recommend death or lopping body parts off the offender.

No, I think he should be punished because I hate hearing this bullshit excuse that someone was drunk.

I couldn't give a kipper's dick if someone was drunk, whether they knew what they were doing or not!  The simple fact is that if someone is drunk to the point that they piss on a memorial, or, more seriously - they kill someone, then they are a liability.

If anyone gets drunk and then wants to hit or fight people then the fuckers are a mortal threat to people like me who just want to enjoy life.  You can't blame the alcohol unless you're going to ban these people from ever touching alcohol again.  If you can't gaurantee me that they won't drink again ever, then lock them away from me or smack them over the head with a shovel and bury them.

We should never have to live with the threat of people who do stuff like this, and THAT is why I think the 'drunk student' should get serious charges against him.

Being drunk should NEVER be any kind of defence or excuse.  Nor should any other drug.

And before you ask: Yes, I have done stupid things when I'm drunk.  Even through my pissed-up haze I knew what I was doing and whether it was right or wrong and I still made that choice to do it.

Should this kid have his whole life ruined just for getting drunk and doing something so stupid?

Yes, he probably should.  And that's his tough shit.

But it could have been far worse, and that's exactly why.

Whatever happens (and I don't think he should do jail time when so many violent criminals don't), he's almost certainly going to have his teeth kicked down his throat at some point in the future.  And I'm afraid he deserves it.

I liked the part where we got to smash him over the head and bury him!! Stupid bastard drunk is still a stupid bastard, eh?

Absolutely!

And while I'll continue to be a stupid bastard whilst drunk - I'll never try and blame it on being drunk!

Maybe if they had him do an exorbitant amount of community service scrubbing down all sorts of Memorials maybe that would be a fitting consequence to his actions.

Yeah I'd go for that.  Let's face it - he's already getting his punishment by being made world famous for being a disrespectful Nobber, and someone at some point WILL smash him in the face for what he did...

Prison - no.  500 hours community service cleaning war memorials - yes.

i agree, let him clean up some memorials and promise not to do it again.  to drunk guys, sometimes anything can resemble a toilet in their wasted brains.  he probably was looking for the handle to flush when he finished.

That's still no excuse though.  He should be banned from ever drinking again.  That'll teach him.

The kids' a dickhead, and dresses like a 'lifter, but some people in this country are just looking to be outraged about something! It's a piece of concrete in a public place!

Definitely.  On the thread on TRC someone said he pissed on concrete and fake flowers - not soldiers and dead bodies.

A lot of people seem to be forgetting that...

LOL maybe it's allowed if you're a rock star?

I bet all he got was slapped wrists and a fine and then everyone forgot about it?  I don't really understand why people are going apeshit over this, but people are getting glassed and punched every single night by people who blame that on being drunk?  They're the fucks we should crucify.

Can't remember what he had to do, but he wasn't popular in Texas for a long time.

You're right, just make this guy wear an orange boiler suit and clean up his own mess... a little humiliation my stop him from doing it in the future.

Make him clean the memorial with a toothbrush, preferably HIS!!  I think that would fit into the eye for an eye punishment in this case.

I'd go with this one as well!

As the security already washed this site down, he'd have to do a few more untreated ones, too.

And I should imagine he'll be cleaning up a lot of additional spit from passersby whilst he's doing his duty...

I think he should be giving something back to the community that he metaphorically pissed all over - whatever it is.

And you can tell from the pic that he didn't JUST piss on the memorial - he was spreading it around to get as much of it as he could!

I have the same problem with people who have a selective mental illness. There's this doctor up here who's trying to convince the courts that she was psychotic when she billed the local health insurance plan for hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of medical consultation to her family members. Now, she says, she feels very embarrassed and wants to retain her stature as an upstanding member of the medical community.

I have two problems with this. First of all, this is the first time that I've ever heard of someone making a profit while they were psychotic. Just doesn't sound plausible to me. Second, if you're that sick that you're psychotic for long periods of time, I really don't want you for my doctor. She's trying to suck and blow at the same time, and guess what? It ain't working!

I agree - drunkenness or altered mental state are no real excuse for anything. Let's have a return to personal accountability, shall we?

if you have a drink and then try to drive or ride a mechanical device it is the same as going to the knife drawer and getting a knife and going on a stabbing spree.
ANYONE who hurts ANYONE because they are drunk in charge of a vehicle should be tried for MURDER - it was premeditated (because no one FORCED you to drink the alcohol)

I think that should be true of any actions under the 'influence' of alcohol.
