February 11, 2009 - Wednesday
This past Monday evening, Randy Bewley had a heart attack while driving his van on Barber Street in Athens, GA. He was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center. Today, our bandmate and brother passed away at a little before 5 p.m. with his family and friends at his side. He will be missed, even as we celebrate his life and creativity. His guitar sound was as special as he was and always will be. Randy's guitar work defined not only a generation of sound but Randy himself. His visual art, painting and photos, combined with his signature sound formed a loose set of boundaries that helps understand him. His quiet devotion to family and friends will become a benchmark for those he leaves behind.

As a long, long time fan, and as a musician, I'm not happy that this happened.

Not at all, and, yet,

I'm happy he lived, played gtr and lived.

Good on him.

Sad.

Pylon has been very dear to me for a long time. From Tyrone's to the Variety there was always a wild, joyous energy to your shows that made me jump up and down and yell myself hoarse. I'll miss that experience but I'll always treasure it. I hope Randy's loved ones can find comfort in knowing how much his music meant to folks like me. Now rock and roll now.

Our condolences to Randy's family. Randy, Vanessa, Michael and Curtis have been longtime friends of both Brad and myself. I will always treasure the many times I spent with Pylon in the basement of Congress Street Station in Savannah before their shows. They were always very polite and accomodating. Thier music will live on and Randy will live on in our hearts.
God bless you Randy!

I am saddened by the news of Randy's untimely passing; but I am sure that his music and art will continue wherever his spirit takes him.

My condolences go out to all the people who knew him or whose lives were touched by his life. Pylon gave tens of thousands of people happy memories of dancing their arses off at Athens' venues in the 80's.

My condolences go out to Randy's family and band mates. I chatted with him for a few minutes after a show at The Melting Point. He seemed like such a nice guy and was so down to earth. I consider myself fortunate to have seen Pylon play at the Revolve Festival and The Melting Point.

Oh, God: this is heartbreaking. My condolences can be as nothing in the face of this, but consider them extended all the same.

On hearing that Randy had been taken, I just sat down, plunged in blank. Gradually there emerged, unbidden, but happy, recollections of those sessions at the long-defunct Stone Mountain Studio during which the first single and album were committed to old-school analog tape and, thus, to the vast archive of humankind's acts of art. All the people drifting, whizzing, bouncing and gliding into, within, through and out of that tiny, tatty set of rooms stuffed with beat-up hardware, all of it for love of the work and each other. And none among all involved more intent, more focused on getting it to happen than Randy.

His oeuvre -- your oeuvre -- will be a much-consulted and much-honored part of that archive as long as our fragile electronic civilization persists. That knowledge comforts me; I hope that in some measure appropriate both to the gravity of the current moment and to the shifting context that will develop as the days spin out it has a similar effect on you. I'll be keeping him who has departed and you who remain equally in my thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear this tragic news! It's not just the great, original guitarist that the world has lost. We have lost the kind, generous guy who I remember from the Loft, an art supply sore in Athens back in the 80s. I'll never forget how Randy was always able to cheer me up when I was down. He was a super guy! My heart goes out to Robin and the boys and all who loved him.

Such sad news. I have been so lucky to see Pylon with Randy several times over the years. His playing will live on with all who have heard and been moved (to gyrations, sometimes!) by way of his uniqueness and power. We were blessed. RIP.

I am deeply saddened. I got to see the show in LA at the Echoplex this past November, and I got to talk with Randy afterwards. I had the opportunity to tell him how much I appriciated the good vibes and all. It was a thrilling moment for me because a long time friend of mine who attended UGA "back in the day" turned me on to your music. That is what Pylon is to me. good vibe, good dancin music. Randy left a positive mark behind in this life. what a wonderful, soulful, genuine and authentic soul he was.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, which I imagine is no less than losing a family member.

I am truely saddened by the news of the passing of Randy Bewley.

When I was fortunate enough to meet him briefly at Mercury Lounge in 2007 he was more than patient and nice to answer the few questions I had for him. As an aspiring guitar player myself I have endlessly tried to duplicate his riffs to Pylon songs. He will surely be missed. Please pass along my deepest sympathies to Curtis and the Bewley Family.
