After picking up Stormie from Choir practice the other day, I was both saddened and amused as to what she had to report. They had mock voting for the presidential elections and she cast her vote for Obama. A friend and her got into a discussion about McCain v/s Obama.

This is what her friend and several other classmates had to tell her about Obama- If he's elected we will only get off one week at christmas, one week in the summer, and the week of his birthday. (now that amused me) The one that saddened me was this- If he's elected he's going to kill off all the white people. There were a few other comments made (I can't remember them right off-hand) and it made me think about something.

These are 6th graders saying this stuff, of course I realize that what is coming out of their mouths is only repeating what they have heard the grownups in their life say. I understand I live in the South, but honestly I get so tired of the ignorance. To think, we STILL live in a country where skin color is a deciding factor when it comes to our votes.

Of course, you understand that I am only stating this because of the remarks I have also heard around town, when the question was raised about who are you going to vote for...

I was proud to cast my vote for Obama. I wish him all the luck in the world, he has alot of messes to try and clean up. I hope that the citizens of this fine country can look past his skin color and support him.

To me, politics is about much more than money. Raise my taxes, I don't care- if that money is going to benefit our enviroment, education, healthcare-do IT! Those are the important issues at the end of the day.

I love the fact that I am raising Little Dems. You know what the coolest thing is though? When we sit around the dinner table and talk about the issues at hand, the changes that this country needs to see, they get it.

That folks gives me hope for our future.

I agree with you....I don't care if the guy (or girl) is green with purple polka dots as long as he does for the greater good of our country. Kids are like sponges, aren't they? Absorbing everything around them-good or bad.

I am disgusted by people that wont vote for someone because of race/gender etc. It also makes me a little sick when someone votes for someone just because of their color or gender. Its about the issues, not how someone happened to be born! Luckily we dont get a lot of that crap around here, at least not that I have heard anyway.

I had a similar discussion of politics with my boys on election day. They, too, were having mock elections at school. Surprisingly, Ryan was really well informed (better informed than some adults). Connor's class had not covered the issues or candidates quite as well (he said he was going to vote for Abraham Lincoln... LOL).

I was impressed, actually, at the unbiased approach to the election that Ryan's teacher had taken (being Texas and all). And Ryan reported that many of his classmates were voting for Obama (a surprise to me, considering our location).

When we talked about the two parties, Ryan asked what I was, then said "then I'll be that too." This is not what I want and I'm afraid too many young people (including those of actual voting age) approach politics this way. I do not expect my children to be liberals because I am, but hope to give them good information upon which to choose their own path.

So... we had a little quiz... at the end of the discussion we determined that Ryan seems to be more democrat and Connor republican... doesn't that sound backward to you? LOL I think, though, that Connor's answers reflect his age... his tendency to look to authority for moral guidance and security... so, are all republicans stuck in a 6-year-old mindset? (sorry to offend... just an observation)

This may send mixed messages, as I always try to look at both sides of the situation.

There is not enough time in the day to discuss the numerous reasons I voted Republican in this election. I tend to hold values that coincide with both parties, however there are some unwaivering core values in which I agree and must stand for with my vote for the Republican Party, not necessarily McCain/Palin.

A President can generate change, such as FDR in his first 100 days, but in retrospect, this was good change for the time, was supposed to be temporary and since it was never removed from policy, has resulted in more government control. How much good change, not just for the immediate, but for our future will be made? I am very excited to see how the next four to eight years will unfold. I am a firm believer change is good. Regardless of who we voted for, adapting to this change and making the best of it is all we can do.

I also believe, perhaps because of the outcome, people may become more involved in the political realm of our globe and further generate better change. Maybe some blinders have been removed from eyes or will be removed.

I believe our country has come a LONG WAY since the Civil Rights Movement and for this am I very proud! Dad talks about Marshall Law in Tuscaloosa as the George Wallace stood on the steps to stop the new classmates from entering the doors of the University of Alabama. He remembers the riots and the chaos of those times in the deep South. If we as a country, not as the minority of those in the antiquated mindset, have moved past this and elected a minority, whether it is a woman or an African American..... AGAIN I AM PROUD!!!

In discussing with the kiddo's, there were many false rumors circulating the Texas and Louisiana schools. It is a shame to wonder about those parents whom didn't discuss these issues with their children. I too, was pleased with the open mindedness of our children and their willingness to hear everyone's opinion and formulate their own from facts and not false rumors.

Well, I've got to finish getting kids ready....
