For Andrew Penner, the partnership made sense. The lead singer of Sunparlour Players grew up on a farm in the area of Leamington, outside of Windsor, Ontario, in one of Canada's most favourable growing climates. "With the resurgence of eating local and thinking about where your food is coming from, home canning is one of those things that is really becoming popular again. We've been doing this for a while, selling some of our favourite preserves at our shows when we tour."
"We also love how Bernardin works in the community" continues Andrew Penner.
Bernardin supports community coops through education and sponsorship and they also maintain a partnership with Foodshare Toronto, an organization who subsidizes fresh produce, student nutrition programs, community gardening, cooking classes and food workshops.
The team at Bernardin discovered the band's love of home canning when President Jim Rotz attended a show and saw Bernardin jars filled with the Sunparlour Player's homemade signature jams, spreads and jellies wedged in between the stacks of CDs at the merch table. "This is the first time we've worked with a band before, and we're excited to bring them on as ambassadors for Bernardin."
Currently available on tour are such delectable spreads as Handsome Strong Mustard and Red Pepper & Chilli Spreads. The band is currently cooking up a batch of Beet Jelly for the fall and winter seasons.
Well-known in Canada for their furious roots rock, the three-piece multi-instrumentalist band (Andrew Penner, Dennis Van Dine and Michael "Rosie" Rosenthal) are excited to get back on the road to bring their album to other parts of Canada. Metro gave Wave North a solid four stars when reviewing the record saying, "The Sunparlour Players succeed where so many other folk revivalists fail, finding poetry in their own backyard."
About Bernardin
For over 100 years, home canning has been an exclusive focus for Bernardin Ltd. It is their goal to provide consumers with the tools and expertise they need to bring nature's bounty to their table all year long. Today home canning is even more attractive to Canadians because of their growing concern and interest in knowing the source of the food they eat. Bernardin......Because You Can!
