"This is simply one of the greatest clubs in the country.
With its rich tradition and great reputation for always having good music,
the Continental Club seems to be a hot spot for anyone who really likes
music. And if you go, you just may find yourself sitting next to Julia Roberts
or Johnny Depp. You never know at the CC. And that's why bigger acts such
as Rev. Horton Heat or Spoon always make a stop here on tour. As far as
musicians are concerned, there's no better place to play...or go."

Dianne's Dish
Hello
everyone! Are y'all ready for another pretty darn spectacular weekend
at The Continental Club? Well, we got one coming up, that's for sure!
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson celebrates her annual birthday bash with us on Friday night. Opener Rosie Flores was the angel that coaxed Ms Jackson out of retirement to appear on Rosie's Rockabilly Filly
CD. We all owe Rosie a BIG thank you for that! Does anyone remember how
many of these "annual" birthday bashes we've done? I'm going to have to
look that up in the archives. On Saturday night Jon Dee Graham celebrates the release of It's Not As Bad As It Looks!
Knuckle Yummy opens, and Two Hoots & a Holler
close. This is Graham's first release since the accident that occured
in July, 2008. Driving home from a gig in Dallas, he fell asleep at the
wheel on I-35 and crashed into a barrier. He suffered two broken ribs,
a punctured spleen, cracked vertebrae and a concussion. Emergency
surgery was performed to remove his spleen which ruptured. He was
released from the hospital, and in no time he was back to playing
shows, even though it hurt just to breathe. Later that year Graham fell
from a ladder while putting up Christmas lights (listen to his old song
"I Hate Christmas") and sustained 16 separate fractures, a punctured
lung and a lacerated liver. THEN, he started writing the songs on this
CD. It really was as bad as it looked, but he'll never admit that. And
he will show you the scars if you ask! This will indeed be a celebration.

Wednesday
night’s rain didn’t keep the crowd away from paying their respects to
Austin fiddler Amy Farris, who was found dead at her home in Los
Angeles Sept. 30. By 8 p.m., capacity was reached and a long line
started forming, with a “one out one in” door code.
Such Farris friends as Dave Alvin and Exene from L.A. and Austin’s Kelly Willis were scheduled to perform.
On Wednesday, the L.A. county’s coroner’s office said Farris’ official cause of death is still pending.
Tell us: which were the most poignant moments at the memorial show?

It was perfect from beginning to end. I laughed and cried and was touched by the love all around me. All for Amy. Perfect.

Teachers and students of Amy did a beautiful job. Warren Hood is such a gentleman. Incredible musicianship and grace.
Jon Dee Graham had me in tears from beginning to end. When Exene played
the song she and Amy wrote together, it was magic. Jesse Dayton’s song
for Danny Bland. Sweet Kelly, I could almost hear Amy’s harmony. Damon
reminded us how generous Amy was with her friends. Pretty dresses…they
nailed it! Dave Alvin and the guilty “women”. What a perfect set and
beautiful finale.

Riverboat Gamblers have asked for everyone's help after their guitarist, Ian MacDougall was seriously injured.
It’s definitely been a trying few days. On the night of Saturday October 17th, while riding his bike home, a car hit Ian Mcdougall, guitarist of our band Riverboat Gamblers.
He sustained some pretty heavy injuries including a broken hip, a
broken wrist and hemmoraging under the skull along with many
lacerations, torn ligaments, bruises and and scrapes. He was
rushed by ambulance to Brackenridge hospital in Austin and stayed in
the ICU for 2 days before being moved into his own room where he is
undergoing physical therapy while awaiting the results on X-rays and
MRIs as well as a deluge of other various tests.
That being said, the prognosis is better than we had first thought. We
are happy that he is going to be ok and that he is alive and with us.
Unfortunately, not only is he in for a long recovery and is in a lot of
pain, but he will be celebrating his birthday in bed with hospital food.
On another unfortunate note, there are a pile of bills currently
gaining a Mt. Everest-like summit from all his hospital expenses. We
set up a PayPal account
for our band mate and friend to try and help him get on top of the debt
and focus on his recovery. His PayPal account email is
ian.gambler@gmail.com. Anything you can afford to give will be greatly
appreciated by Ian and his family. Thank you all for your support and
we wish Ian the speediest of recoveries.

New York, September XX, 2009 - The Orchard announced that retired recording artist Mojo Nixon will release a new album Whiskey Rebellion
on October 7th, for free, exclusively on Amazon MP3. The album, with
seventeen never-before released tracks, along with the full Mojo Nixon

digital music retailer. Following the three week promotion on Amazon,
the full catalog will be available for half of its normal price.
"Can't wait for Washington to fix the economy," Mojo Nixon stated. "We
must take bold action now. If I make the new album free and my entire
catalog free it will stimulate the economy. It might even
over-stimulate the economy. History has shown than when people listen
to my music money tends to flow to bartenders, race tracks, late night
greasy spoons, bail bondsman, go kart tracks, tractor pulls, football
games, peep shows and several black market vices. My music causes
itches that it usually takes some money to scratch".
The Whiskey Rebellion collection
is a variety songs left off of previous albums, songs from movie
soundtracks and television shows, sports themes, alternative versions
of previously released songs, and demos. "I had lost my secret stash",
says Nixon. "I had hid it from myself and did such a good job I
couldn't remember where. While rooting around under the front porch I
found an old shoe box full of cassette tapes strays -lost dogs
-homeless songs in need of a title..." "All of these songs only existed
on cassette tapes", says Nixon. "Songs from various cockamamie schemes
dating from 1983 to 2007. Some solo, some with The Toadliquors, and some I don't even remember when, where, or with whom they were recorded".
The songs from Whiskey Rebellion
range from songs about Dr. Laura and songs about Asparagus to songs
about Kinky Friedman and the theme song Mojo wrote for the 1998 US
Olympic Luge Team. The other songs Mojo has arranged for free download
at Amazon include his signature tunes "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With
My Two Headed Luv Child", "Don Henley Must Die", "I Hate Banks", "I Saw
Jesus At McDonalds At Midnight", "Burn Down The Malls", "Bring Me The
Head Of David Geffen", "You Can't Kill Me", the huge crowd pleasing
favorite "Tie My Pecker To My Leg" and his acclaimed 1987 hit "Elvis Is
Everywhere". "It has been concluded by a team of top economists for
each of my albums downloaded free nearly $100 will flow into the
underbelly, grass roots, dive bar economy", states Nixon. "Mojo Nixon
overstimulus sensation sweeping the nation".Act now! Limited time

Mojo Nixon
is currently a full-time on-air personality on Sirus XM Satellite radio
hosting a daily music show on the Outlaw Country channel, a weekly
political talkshow on the Raw Dog Comedy Channel and a weekly racing
show on the NASCAR channel. Bruce Springsteen has called him "The King Of The DJs". Mojo is coming out of retirement for a tour to support Whiskey Rebellion. The tour includes a total of two shows in Texas with his backing band The Toadliquors. Friday November 6th at The Continental Club in Austin and Saturday November 7th at The Continental Club in Houston. Dash Rip Rock and New Duncan Imperials will support both shows.
Mojo Nixon released his first album in 1985. He has shared the stage with artists ranging from Dead Kennedys, The Pogues and The Butthole Surfers to Koko Taylor, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ali Farka Toure.
He officially retired from touring in 2004. He was the unofficial
captain of the medal winning 1998 US Olympic Luge team. In one week he
appeared on a cover story in the Wall Street Journal while also
appearing nude in Future Sex Magazine. A column he once wrote for
Hustler Magazine was censored for inappropriate material. He has
appeared in several bad movies. He debated Pat Buchanan on Crossfire. Don Henley
once joined him onstage to sing along with the song "Don Henley Must
Die". He has surprisingly never been shot or arrested. He has been
named Drunk Of The Month by Modern Drunkard Magazine. He has performed
in Moosejaw, Sasketchewan. In 2009 he was very surprised to find a shoe
box under his front porch with 17 cassettes of unreleased songs.

On Wednesday, October 28, The Continental Club will host Beyond the Blues: a Peter Case Benefit. Appearing in no particular order: Gurf
Morlix, Jon Dee Graham; Walter Tragert; Daylight Titans; Larry Seaman
w/Randy Franklin, Cindy Toth, & Terri Lord; Ron Flynt; Chrissy
Flatt & Eric Hisaw; Penny Jo Pullus; The Krayolas; The Hickoids;
Hilary York; Matt Devine (doing the Nerves EP) w/Jeff Copas &
Carrie Clark & more; Freddy Krc & Cam King; Dustin Welch; and Bonny Holmes. If you are unable to attend the show, but would like to help out, you can donate at Hidden Love Medical Relief.
On January 15, 2009, three-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter-guitarist Peter Case
underwent emergency open-heart surgery. The surgery was successful and
he is now on a long program of recovery. Peter is not ill and is
expected to make a full recovery … but the medical bills associated
with this necessary surgery and recovery are and will continue to be
very high. And, like all too many talented working artists, Peter does
not have medical insurance. Peter has been unable to play or teach
since the surgery.
Hidden Love Medical Relief
is an effort by Peter’s friends, fans and fellow artists to help
alleviate the burden of these mounting medical bills so that Peter can
recover, get back and focus on what he does best – writing and
performing his songs. No one involved with Hidden Love is going to make
money on this endeavor. That's not the point. All money raised through
this effort will be applied to Peter’s medical expenses.
The
idea behind Hidden Love is that acts of Love – big or small – are often
Hidden. We – and you – are doing this because we care for Peter and for
his work and feel deeply that, at the end of the day, we need to take
care of each other.

Best of the Rest
Thursday, October 22 @ 10, 11:15, 12:30. $7 - In the last two years, Wisebird
has played shows from coast to coast and has been warmly received at
festivals such as Desert Rocks, Wakarusa, and Las Tortugas. The band
continues to garner new fans everywhere they go. The organic sound of
Wisebird's heralded live performances blends with their astonishing
musicianship and a passion for songcraft. Wisebird takes the listener
on a journey--from uptempo, second line rhythm to gospel-stomp to
gritty funk. Shawn Nelson
has followed his calling as a singer/songwriter, steadily writing and
performing for a mixed bag of devoted audiences. His music has threads
of country, blues and rock. And his philosophy is simple – write lyrics
with intent and back them with solid melodies. "Shawn Nelson
brings a new edge and fresh perspective to songwriting and especially
songwriting in Texas. He is to Texas music what gamblers were to the
old west. With a smile on his face and a pistol in his boot, one way or
the other you're going to like the hand you are dealt. Telling the
truth, with no boundaries, guidelines or formulas. What a concept."
~Greg Roberts, Austin Music City. Graham Wilkinson
is one of those artists that draws positive press for his shows &
recordings like bees to clover. Here are some brief examples... "In a town (Austin) known for its eclectic music there is very few bands as eclectic as this one." ~Jay Trachtenberg, KUT. "Graham is like no other musician on the scene with charisma in spades and the songs to match." ~Hayes Carll (Lost Highway Records Artist).
"Graham's a great singer/songwriter. His songs are deep from the heart.
His music on stage comes across as very honest, true and real. His
unique voice and style make for an enjoyable live show." ~Steve Augello, RCA.

Friday, October 23 @ 10:00, 12:00. $15 - "Whether
she sweetly croons western swing, weeps country, wails the blues, or
yelps rockabilly, there are few roots music styles that Rosie Flores
can't imbue with heartbreaking panache or foot-stomping fire. On stage
she can play mellow acoustic or rambunctious lead electric guitars, and
sell it with the freewheeling spirit of a rockabilly icon. The
expressive Texas-born, California-raised singer-songwriter has refused
to be stylistically pigeonholed. Although her eclectic ways have cost
Flores a major label career, she has become an independent label icon
with an international following." ~Ken Burke. Amazon.com.
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson ( I love saying that!)
celebrates 72 years with her Annual Birthday Bash at The Continental
Club! After graduating from high school, Jackson began to tour with her
father as manager and chaperon. She often shared the bill with Elvis
Presley, who encouraged Jackson to sing rockabilly. She is a singer and
guitarist who had success in the mid-1950s and 60s as one of the first
popular female rockabilly singers and a pioneering rock and roll
artist. She is known to many as the The First Lady (or Queen) of
Rockabilly. Jackson mixed country music with fast-moving rockabilly,
often recording them on opposite sides of a record. As rockabilly
declined in popularity in the mid-1960s, she moved to a successful
career in mainstream country music with a string of hits between 1966
and 1973, including, "Tears Will Be the Chaser for Your Wine," "A Woman
Lives for Love" and "Fancy Satin Pillows." She has enjoyed a resurgence
of popularity among rockabilly revivalists in Europe, and was inducted
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence on April 4,
2009.

Saturday, October 24 @ 9:00, 10:30. $10 - A native of Lafayette Louisiana, Kevin Sekhani's recently released album, Sumner Street, is being considered for nomination in the GRAMMY Best Americiana Album category. Sumner Street
is a rich, organic blend of Alternative country-style Americana and
pop. It is textured with fiddle, accordion and dobro and showcases
Kevin's Louisiana roots both musically and lyrically. He opened for
tonight's headliners, Lost Bayou Ramblers
last month and it was a terrific pairing so LBR wanted to do it again.
Over the past 300 years, a cultural amalgam has been percolating in
south Louisiana. The resulting cultural distillate gave rise to both
Bayou Country's world famous cuisine and a musical concentrate that
conveys the passions, tribulations, and elations of the Cajun people.
At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the Lost Bayou Ramblers are
the keepers of the flame, champions of Cajun music's cultural past.
"LBR's youthful vigor, unpolished rawness and passion are often
confused with rockabilly or punk rock influences, when in fact these
uncontainable energies were present in the Cajun repertoire long before
the first hotrod laid rubber on Main Street or The Ramones eyed their
first black leather jacket. Still, while LBR may not need amps, their
intensity and talent goes up to 11, a sound that makes dyed in the wool
seem like an iron-on decal. ”

Wednesday, October 28 @9:30, $? (probably $10) - The Continental Club will host Beyond the Blues: a Peter Case Benefit.
Peter Case is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, who has had
a wide-ranging career ranging from new wave music to folk rock to solo
acoustic performance. In 1976, he teamed up with Jack Lee and Paul
Collins in to form the early new wave band The Nerves in San Francisco.
The group's 1976 single, "Hanging on the Telephone", was later recorded
by Blondie. When the Nerves disbanded, Case moved to Los Angeles and
formed the pop-rock band The Plimsouls in 1980. The Plimsouls found a
measure of success when their song "A Million Miles Away" was featured
in the movie Valley Girl, but by that time the group had already broken
up. Case briefly toured with Gurf Morlix, Victoria Williams (Case's
first wife), and Warren Tornado Klein as the Incredibly Strung Out
Band, but their collaboration never resulted in a record. In 1989 Bruce
Springsteen told Rolling Stone magazine that he was listening to Peter
Case more than anyone else that year. In 1996, the Plimsouls reunited
for the first of several reunions. On December 6, 2007, Case's Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John
was nominated for a Grammy award in the Best Traditional Folk Album
category. In January 2009, Case underwent heart surgery, leading to
fund raising efforts by other musicians to help defray his medical
costs. The fundraisers continue across the country. Appearing in no
particular order: Gurf Morlix, Jon Dee Graham; Walter Tragert;

Thursday, October 29 @ 10:00, 12:00. $? - The Jade Idol
is Austin's newest band, starring Mark Ford and Bobby Bleed... Rock and
Rhythm Revue..... Its all about simple rock'n roll. No Gimicks.
Basically they just want to play music that makes girls want to dance
and have some fun...... thats' really it. Los Staitjackets
have been making their brand of raucous, instrumental rock since 1994
and have become known as one of the most dynamic and skillful
instrumental bands on the planet. Their renowned live show is filled
with mind-bending guitar theatrics, group choreography and fuzzed-out
experiments in high fidelity rock and roll showmanship. And, don't
forget the wrestling masks each band member wears onstage. The band's
music can also be heard in on soundtracks for TV shows including
Malcolm in the Middle and at least 10 feature films, including Meet the
Parents, Harriet the Spy, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Two
Days in the Valley. They appear as themselves in Psycho Beach Party.
"We never try to be meaningful," guitarist Eddie Angel says. "We're an
anecdote to that. Our goal is to bring fun to the party."

Friday, October 30 @ 10:00, 11:15, 12:30. $10 - "Hearing
music that puts a mirror up to your very soul is all well and good, but
sometimes you just want to hear something silly that makes you smile. The Grates.
definitely hail from the latter school of thought. With just guitar,
drums, and an ebulliently spry singer, the Brisbane, Australia, trio
rocked the house like it was a high school basement party. Furrowed
brows might be inclined to write the Grates off as a mere derivation of
the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Indeed, vocalist Patience Hodgson does
occasionally indulge in Karen O's warbling tonalities, but it's coming
from a much kookier, less maniacal place. She may be odd, but it's a
good-natured kind of odd. As Hodgson twists, flails, and giggles her
way across the stage in the spirit of high-energy, bop-happy fun,
guitarist John Patterson holds it down with no-muss pop minimalism.
Meanwhile, drummer Alana Skyring pounds out solid tribal beats that
belie her smallish frame." ~Greg Beets, Austin Chronicle. Those Darlins
are a pop group, if they are any one thing, which doesn't mean anybody
with ears can't hear the country and rock 'n' roll in their sound and
stance. Or maybe this trio of young women, who live a long stone's
throw from Nashville, Tennessee in the college town of Murfreesboro,
are punks straight out of London or Cleveland, 1977. Writing about one
of the Darlins' seven raucous, confident performances at SxSW,
Billboard's Bill Werde dubbed them "Best Band I Didn't Really Know
Before I Got to SXSW," and went on to describe them as "Patsy Cline for
the punk era," and in the New York Times, veteran journalist David Carr
reported, "In a world of emo-boys and reluctant band leaders, Those
Darlins, country-punk pals from Murfreesboro, Tenn., had a comically
leering sexuality and the kind of abandon that seems scarce these
days." Paste and USA Today, among others, listed the Darlins among
their favorites of the entire festival. Austin Sound reviewed A Giant Dog,
saying "When Sabrina Ellis unleashes her fevered, cathartic howl
against the wall of pulsing garage psych sound of A Giant Dog, the
result is an intense force that melds Grace Slick and early Holly
Golightly. Though only formed last year, the local quintet slides
impressively through raw rhythms and pent up power that revels in lo-fi
psych-country kickers and more blistering punk enthused and droning
ferocity."

Saturday, October 31 @ 9:30, 10:30, 12:15. $10 - Knuckle Yummy
"sounds like blood, red mud, sweat, switchblades, cobalt smoke,
whiskey-soaked dance floors, righteous indignation, abandon,
freedom...".Yeah, like that... "Knuckle Yummy fare you well drips with
the vitality of a life broken free from its moorings. From the edge we
leapt, diving headlong into abandon's maw, and that much ain't gonna
change. Ever." Jon Dee Graham release party for It's Not As Bad As It Looks. It’s Not As Bad As it Looks
is about -- you guessed it – second chances, hope, sin &
redemption, the constant search for higher meaning and a path forward,
and trying to walk that fine line life often forces upon you. And it’s
all delivered through Jon Dee Graham’s unique prism of pointed lyrics,
searing guitar, and arrangements that sway between touching ballads and
balls out rock with a punk edge. “I know this is loaded and I am way
too close to it” Graham says, “but I think it’s my best record since my
first one, Escape From Monster Island.” It’s Not As Bad As It Looks
was recorded this summer at Austin’s Wire Recording with Stuart
Sullivan at the helm. Graham produced with his long-time musical
partner and cohort, Mike Hardwick. Another stalwart compadre, Andrew
Duplantis, of Son Volt, was on bass. And Joey Sheffield held down the
backbeat with help from another Austin fixture, drummer Daren Hess. If
the few new songs that I've heard are any indication, Graham is right
on target with his evaluation of his latest release - it's going to
rank amongst his best! Two Hoots & a Holler
is influenced by everyone from Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash to The
Cramps and The Clash to the swampy, Cajun music Broussard heard growing
up. While the band can play a mean classic country tune, there’s no
