"This is simply one of the greatest clubs in the country. With its rich tradition and great reputation for always having good music, the Continental Club seems to be a hot spot for anyone who really likes music. And if you go, you just may find yourself sitting next to Julia Roberts or Johnny Depp. You never know at the CC. And that's why bigger acts such as Rev. Horton Heat or Spoon always make a stop here on tour. As far as musicians are concerned, there's no better place to play...or go." ~CitySearch.com

Hello everyone! The Austin Film Festival made a great showing at the Club all weekend. Thanks, y'all for checking us out. On Friday night the rockabilly filly, Rosie Flores, open the show & stole the hearts of everyone who heard her. Steve thanked her publicly for bringing us the incomparable Wanda Jackson. Wanda first appeared at the Club for SXSW 1999 when Rosie was showcasing & Wanda was her special guest - they had recorded Rosie's Rockabilly Filly album together. Last weekend Wanda celebrated her 72 birthday at our 11th Annual Wanda Jackson Birthday Bash. She looks & sounds fabulous! Her backup band was Danny B Harvey, Earl Poole Ball, Sarah Brown, and Tom Lewis. I heard that the next night in Houston was just as magical. Saturday night Kevin Sekhani and Lost Bayou Ramblers had the packed house smiling and Cajun dancing. I heard a few Cajun yells too... ooops, sorry. That was me. Boyd Elder and his entourage (they looked like actors... whatever that means) stopped in. In case you didn't know, Boyd was the artist for the covers of 6 Eagles' albums. He still lives in West Texas and spends his days creating fabulous leather clothing or minding the Prada store in Marfa (? sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it?). But that's only when he isn't busy with films or voice-overs or some other artistic pastimes. Sunday night was on the verge of sold out all night long for Heybale! They were awesome, as always, and everyone in the core group was there - Redd, Earl, Kevin, Gary & Tom. Monday night was another good night at the Continental! The guys from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia were introduced to the Club by Mike Judge who brought them in. Mike even sat in on bass with Dale Watson. Late that night, Dale announced that Cal Ripkin Jr. was also in the audience. Some of the Pogues made it in too! Shane McGowen didn't come with them though. Maybe next time.

On Saturday night Jon Dee Graham celebrates the release of It's Not As Bad As It Looks! Knuckle Yummy opens, and Two Hoots & a Holler close. This is Graham's first release since the accident that occured in July, 2008. Driving home from a gig in Dallas, he fell asleep at the wheel on I-35 and crashed into a barrier. He suffered two broken ribs, a punctured spleen, cracked vertebrae and a concussion. Emergency surgery was performed to remove his spleen which ruptured. He was released from the hospital, and in no time he was back to playing shows, even though it hurt just to breathe. Later that year Graham fell from a ladder while putting up Christmas lights (listen to his old song "I Hate Christmas") and sustained 16 separate fractures, a punctured lung and a lacerated liver. THEN, he started writing the songs on this CD. It really was as bad as it looked, but he'll never admit that. And he will show you the scars if you ask! This will indeed be a celebration.

New York, September XX, 2009 - The Orchard announced that retired recording artist Mojo Nixon will release a new album Whiskey Rebellion on October 7th, for free, exclusively on Amazon MP3. The album, with seventeen never-before released tracks, along with the full Mojo Nixon catalog, will be available for free in the first three weeks at the digital music retailer. Following the three week promotion on Amazon, the full catalog will be available for half of its normal price.
"Can't wait for Washington to fix the economy," Mojo Nixon stated. "We must take bold action now. If I make the new album free and my entire catalog free it will stimulate the economy. It might even over-stimulate the economy. History has shown than when people listen to my music money tends to flow to bartenders, race tracks, late night greasy spoons, bail bondsman, go kart tracks, tractor pulls, football games, peep shows and several black market vices. My music causes itches that it usually takes some money to scratch".
The Whiskey Rebellion collection is a variety songs left off of previous albums, songs from movie soundtracks and television shows, sports themes, alternative versions of previously released songs, and demos. "I had lost my secret stash", says Nixon. "I had hid it from myself and did such a good job I couldn't remember where. While rooting around under the front porch I found an old shoe box full of cassette tapes strays -lost dogs -homeless songs in need of a title..." "All of these songs only existed on cassette tapes", says Nixon. "Songs from various cockamamie schemes dating from 1983 to 2007. Some solo, some with The Toadliquors, and some I don't even remember when, where, or with whom they were recorded".
Mojo is coming out of retirement for a tour to support Whiskey Rebellion. The tour includes a total of two shows in Texas with his backing band The Toadliquors. Friday November 6th at The Continental Club in Austin and Saturday November 7th at The Continental Club in Houston. Dash Rip Rock and New Duncan Imperials will support both shows.

Best of the Rest
Thursday, October 29 @ 10:00, 12:00. $12 - The Jade Idol is Austin's newest band, starring Mark Ford and Bobby Bleed... Rock and Rhythm Revue..... Its all about simple rock'n roll. No Gimicks. Basically they just want to play music that makes girls want to dance and have some fun...... thats' really it. Los Staitjackets have been making their brand of raucous, instrumental rock since 1994 and have become known as one of the most dynamic and skillful instrumental bands on the planet. Their renowned live show is filled with mind-bending guitar theatrics, group choreography and fuzzed-out experiments in high fidelity rock and roll showmanship. And, don't forget the wrestling masks each band member wears onstage. The band's music can also be heard in on soundtracks for TV shows including Malcolm in the Middle and at least 10 feature films, including Meet the Parents, Harriet the Spy, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Two Days in the Valley. They appear as themselves in Psycho Beach Party. "We never try to be meaningful," guitarist Eddie Angel says. "We're an anecdote to that. Our goal is to bring fun to the party."

Friday, October 30 @ 10:00, 11:15, 12:30. $10 - "Hearing music that puts a mirror up to your very soul is all well and good, but sometimes you just want to hear something silly that makes you smile. The Grates. definitely hail from the latter school of thought. With just guitar, drums, and an ebulliently spry singer, the Brisbane, Australia, trio rocked the house like it was a high school basement party. Furrowed brows might be inclined to write the Grates off as a mere derivation of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Indeed, vocalist Patience Hodgson does occasionally indulge in Karen O's warbling tonalities, but it's coming from a much kookier, less maniacal place. She may be odd, but it's a good-natured kind of odd. As Hodgson twists, flails, and giggles her way across the stage in the spirit of high-energy, bop-happy fun, guitarist John Patterson holds it down with no-muss pop minimalism. Meanwhile, drummer Alana Skyring pounds out solid tribal beats that belie her smallish frame." ~Greg Beets, Austin Chronicle. Those Darlins are a pop group, if they are any one thing, which doesn't mean anybody with ears can't hear the country and rock 'n' roll in their sound and stance. Or maybe this trio of young women, who live a long stone's throw from Nashville, Tennessee in the college town of Murfreesboro, are punks straight out of London or Cleveland, 1977. Writing about one of the Darlins' seven raucous, confident performances at SxSW, Billboard's Bill Werde dubbed them "Best Band I Didn't Really Know Before I Got to SXSW," and went on to describe them as "Patsy Cline for the punk era," and in the New York Times, veteran journalist David Carr reported, "In a world of emo-boys and reluctant band leaders, Those Darlins, country-punk pals from Murfreesboro, Tenn., had a comically leering sexuality and the kind of abandon that seems scarce these days." Paste and USA Today, among others, listed the Darlins among their favorites of the entire festival. Austin Sound reviewed A Giant Dog, saying "When Sabrina Ellis unleashes her fevered, cathartic howl against the wall of pulsing garage psych sound of A Giant Dog, the result is an intense force that melds Grace Slick and early Holly Golightly. Though only formed last year, the local quintet slides impressively through raw rhythms and pent up power that revels in lo-fi psych-country kickers and more blistering punk enthused and droning ferocity."

@ 9:30, 10:30, 12:30. $10. We get an extra hour tonight for Daylight Savings Time! - Knuckle Yummy "sounds like blood, red mud, sweat, switchblades, cobalt smoke, whiskey-soaked dance floors, righteous indignation, abandon, freedom...".Yeah, like that... "Knuckle Yummy fare you well drips with the vitality of a life broken free from its moorings. From the edge we leapt, diving headlong into abandon's maw, and that much ain't gonna change. Ever." Tonight is Jon Dee Graham's release party for It's Not As Bad As It Looks. It’s Not As Bad As it Looks is about -- you guessed it – second chances, hope, sin & redemption, the constant search for higher meaning and a path forward, and trying to walk that fine line life often forces upon you. And it’s all delivered through Jon Dee Graham’s unique prism of pointed lyrics, searing guitar, and arrangements that sway between touching ballads and balls out rock with a punk edge. “I know this is loaded and I am way too close to it” Graham says, “but I think it’s my best record since my first one, Escape From Monster Island.” It’s Not As Bad As It Looks was recorded this summer at Austin’s Wire Recording with Stuart Sullivan at the helm. Graham produced with his long-time musical partner and cohort, Mike Hardwick. Another stalwart compadre, Andrew Duplantis, of Son Volt, was on bass. And Joey Sheffield held down the backbeat with help from another Austin fixture, drummer Daren Hess. If the few new songs that I've heard live are any indication, Graham is right on target with his evaluation of his latest release - it's sure to rank amongst his best! Jon Dee will play until midnight! Two Hoots & a Holler is influenced by everyone from Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash to The Cramps and The Clash to the swampy, Cajun music Broussard heard growing up. While the band can play a mean classic country tune, there’s no denying the effect rock ‘n’ roll has had on them, which led Broussard to once remark, “I’m just a punk rocker in cowboy clothes.” They're happy to fill up that extra hour we get tonight with some foot-stompin' tunes. Aieeee!

@ 10:00, 12:00. $10 - Zapata! is roots music done their own-style: with unapologetic, edgy rock styling. Zapata's guitar, said by J. Mozersky to be “a voice on its own,” leads into the song with sharp, hard cuts, before the drummer's incomparable, fleshy drums. The songs are simple and natural, but the jaggedness of Zapata’s guitar contributes a roughness that, when mixed with the lunatic trance-like rhythms you can feel in your gut, results in a vivid Rock experience…the low down Texas way. Zapata! is the duo of Eric Zapata on guitar, and Gary Clark Jr. on drums. Cedric Burnside & Lightnin' Malcolm are another must-see duo, a.k.a. the Juke Joint Duo, and for good reason... "Once in a while you witness a birth in this business. A kind of unawareness to the fact that there are other sounds to be heard that you haven't yet discovered, or dialects and music that is still being invented. That is precisely the sound you hear from this Mississippi duo. You give these two guys 1 instrument each and they can make it sound like a Quartet. Bent deep in the Mississippi hill country, RL Burnside's grandson, Cedric has teamed up with the monster guitar talents of Lightnin' Malcolm, giving a mixed dose of traditional to modern hill country blues with a new twist all the way from rock to psychedelic." ~2007, Dirk Wissbaum Bluessource.com.

"...having a grand old time cranking out tune after tune (after tune after tune ... ) of lighthearted, irresistibly simple rockers." ~Ken Lieck, Austin Chronicle. Mojo Nixon & The Toadliquors are coming out of retirement for a tour to support Whiskey Rebellion. The tour includes a total of two shows with his backing band from Austin & Houston TX, The Toadliquors. You can catch them at The Continental Club in Austin on Friday, and at The Continental Club in Houston on Saturday. The album, with seventeen never-before released tracks, along with the full Mojo Nixon catalog, will be available for free in the first three weeks at the digital music retailer, Amazon.com. Following the three week promotion on Amazon, the full catalog will be available for half of its normal price. "Can't wait for Washington to fix the economy," Mojo Nixon stated. Dash Rip Rock has always revolved around Bill Davis, and has seen the comings and goings of many other band members. Despite the roller coaster ride Dash has experienced for the last 25 years, they continue to be acclaimed as the best live band to ever walk the planet. As long as this title applies, DRR will continue to rock the largest and smallest venues around the world. "It’s simply fun and everyone likes to just have fun sometimes." ~Eric Padua.

@ 10:00, 12:00. $10 - Lisa Marshall "belts 'em out like Janis Joplin and can gyrate like master contortionist Joe Cocker," writes Monterey journalist Beth Peerless. "...that pretty little pixie (Lisa) was a musician through and through. She knew her chops and busted ass to get there. Then she opened up and sang. Good lord. She barely comes up to my ribcage but she has got the voice of a serious belter. And refreshing. What really makes it is that when she sings a song, you cant imagine it being sung any other way." ~Chopperman, Adventure Rider, WA. Red Elvises are a Russian-American band that performs rock & roll, surf, rockabilly, reggae, lounge and traditional Russian styles of music. Longtime bassist Oleg Bernov, and keyboard player Elena Shemankova are no longer with the band. The band continues to tour relentlessly throughout 2009. The line-up currently consists of Igor Yuzov (guitar and vocals), Kfir Melamed (bass), Milka Ramos (guitar and vocals) and Adam Gust (drums).

- Michael Holt Medical Benefit. As many of you may know, Michael Holt (Michael Holt and the Trophy 500's) was in a serious motorcycle accident recently. He suffered 5 compression fractures in 5 vertebrae, as well as bruising his ribs, hip, and pelvis. Unable to work (and play guitar), and medical expenses mounting, Michael could really use some help right now - all proceeds will go to the Holt family. Cowboy Harley Davidson will sponsor a Harley Run in conjunction with the benefit. For more information on the Harley Run and pre-registration, please contact Cowboy Harley Davidson. Emerging from the Punk Scene in Southern California in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Jimmy & The Mustangs played their first live show to a sold out audience opening for The Go-Go’s. At the time, the band’s “root’s music” was fueled by fury driven; gut wrenching guitars, not unlike their punk contenders of that era. As the band progressed, a more definitive sound began to evolve and Jimmy and the Mustangs carved out a style of rockabilly and swing unlike any other band in Los Angeles at the time. Since moving to Austin, Jimmy has put together an all-Austin band! Spencer Thomas Band harkens back to the days of old south austin, raw, unrehearsed, top notch R&B players layin it down and feelin the groove! Enjoy Spencer Thomas from The Solid Senders, The Big Pow Wow, and vocalist for Pat Boyack on vocals, Michael Holt from the Trophy 500's on guitar, Brad Fordham from Mason Ruffner, Two Hoots and a Holler, and Jerry jeff walker fame on bass guitar. Jim Trimmier who played with Nick Curran, Duck Soup, The Resentments/The Vanguards and many more. Last but certainly not least, Rodney Craig who's fame lies directly in line with the legendary Cobras, Marcia Ball, and Lou Ann Barton. "For 20 years Rick Broussard's Two Hoots & a Holler has epitomized the best aspects of Texas roots music, merging rockabilly with trad-country and adding enough punk abandon and songwriting flair to keep the whole thing from sounding retro-gimmicky or quaint." ~Gilbert Garcia, San Antonio Current.
