----------------------------------------------------- *** Stafford attended the same Dallas high school (Highland Park) as Bobby Layne, the quarterback who led the Lions to their last championship in 1957 and, legend has it, cursed them when he was traded to Pittsburgh a year later. Stafford lead Highland Park to a Texas state football championship — the school's first since Bobby Layne. The "Curse" in question is the one that Bobby Layne supposedly placed on the Lions franchise shortly after being traded in 1958. Fast forward 50 years and the Lions go 0-16, first time ever a NFL failed to win a single game.
Shortly after the 1958 season began, the year after we had won the championship, Layne was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and not only was the move surprising, it was abrupt. Just like that, the best QB in Lions history was gone. Before leaving Layne allegedly said these words, or something thereabouts: “The Lions won’t win for at least fifty years.” That was just over 50 years ago. Karma..If we don't take him I have a feeling we will live to regret it..Karma..If we take him we'll turn him into a bust...Karma.. I'm a Detroit fan so bring it on..
"It's weird, it's crazy," Stafford said of the cosmic connection between him and Layne. "It's kind of ironic how it all came together."
