Current mood: accomplished
Lately I've been freaking out a little because I'm graduating in a few weeks and the reality that I will be doing so with an Art History degree has finally hit me. Besides that, for some reason, everyone I've talked to over the past month or so, when they found this out their questions have all been the same, "What's Next?"... Way to scare the crap out of someone. In any case, I lost my job at the engineering firm in Jan. Since which time I have done a little freelance and lived off of my student loans, however funds were getting thin and the ever impending "What's Next?" was hanging pretty heavy on my head. Wed. night I had a bit of a break down. After an all around crap-tastic day, which included falling face first and f*cking up my leg in front of a bunch of hipsters, and spending a few hours crying to my mother on the phone, I decided to spend my evening perusing craigslist and other job sites and applying to as many as possible. It was getting to be about midnight, and I was just about to give up, when a new listing popped up titled, "Summer Camp, you bet!" and while I'm not completely adversed to the idea of summer camp, the idea of spending my entire summer baby sitting a bunch of spoiled kids wasn't exactly irresistable. But I clicked on it anyway. The add read pretty short and sweet, "Day camp in Bridgeport looking for staff to start in June, apply with name, photo and amazing real story that is you and what you can successfully bring to summer camp." That's it. So ok, day camp doesn't sound too bad, and Bridgeport is pretty close, so I took a shot at it. Finished my email around 11:58p and got a reply at 12a asking me when I was free for an interview. Anyway, within 20 min of a few emails back and forth, I had an interview set up for the next day (yesterday) Went in to find an incredably laid back environment with tons of potential and the opportunity to develop my own classes, programs and activities as well as organize a community art/music fair. On top of the Summer Camp position they liked me so much that they offered to let me start earlier as regular staff, also finding out that they needed a serious re-vamp of their website, suggested it and now may be doing that as well. So thats it, I am now an art teacher for a community center on the south side in less than 24 hours. Neat! Beyond this super awesome summer opportunity I got 2 other call backs on Thursday leaving me with a job interview on Sat for a bartending position and a position with Art Forum for their Art Chicago booth. I guess it just goes to show you that if you put forth the effort, life gives you what you need...
