Some more kind words 'bout the ol' record.
That's Hot(Kid)
As a blues-rock duo, the comparisons to make when talking about HotKid are obvious. Very, veryobvious, and I'm as guilty as anyone of relying on those comparisons.
The thing is, as their new full-length Someday Somehow makes abundantly clear, those comparisons aren't very accurate. Like, at all. While the band's live show may bring their bluesiness to the fore a bit more (as I saw firsthand at this year's NxNE, where they delivered an outstanding set), on record it's clear that they owe just as much to some of the grrrl rockers of the '90s. They may not be political or as rough around the edges as bands like Bikini Kill or Team Dresch, but they still know how to rock out and rock hard, as songs like "Hold On" and "Oh No" make abundantly clear. Frontwoman Shiloh Harrison's vocals are impassioned (see "Feels So Wrong" for proof), but the lineage they belong to is that of a band like Sleater-Kinney, not Jack White or Black Keys.
