Here's one I've been working on.
Think in 8 bar phrases in 5/4

HH plays the clave x--x--x-x-repeat
then you play a shuffle in dotted quarter time with the ride snare and Bass drum

so

ride   x--x-xx--x-x
snare x-xX-xx-xX-x accenting 2 and 4
BD     x----x ------

so it's really a cycle of 12 notes into a cycle of 10 notes
The cycle loops every 6 bars starting on beat 1 of bar 1, beat 2 of bar 2 etc...

You might want to try the dotted quarter shuffle in 4/4 first.

Ouch! that hurts just thinking about it. I was doing that dotted 1/4 shuffle stuff in 5 (that you showed me) a while ago but without the HH clave you mention. That is some hard shit. Was doing that clave to some dotted 1/4 stuff though. Definatly some brain twister stuff...

Is there any way you can explain this further?  Tell me if I have the concept right.  You are playing in 5/4, the clave pattern is in 5/4 and everything on top of it played in dotted quarter notes which circle around eventually as a polyrhythm.  Am I close?

Yea, you got it. Just make sure you're thinking in 8 bar phrases.

rich

this one's called freeque deux (i must give credit to mr. paul stivitts and you for inspiring this kind of drumming)

rd in 5 x----x----x----x----x----etc.
hh in 3 x--x--x--x--x--x--x--x--etc.
sd in 4 -x-- X-xx -x-x X---
bd in 4 x--x ---- ---- -x--

Here's a little thing I've been working on:
Paradiddle exercise in the hands involving the snare, tom, and floor tom: paradiddle-diddle, paradiddle-diddle, paradiddle, etc.
with dotted eighths in the high hat foot, and a 5/16 pattern in the kick...like such:

rlrr    llrl    rrll   rlrr         lrll     rrlr     llrr      lrll
t1   ----  ----  ----  ----   |  x---   --x-   ----    x---
sd   -xxx xx-x  xxxx -xxx  |  -xxx  xx-x   xxxx  -xxx
ft    x---  --x-  ----  x---   |  ----  ----   ----    ----
bd  x-x-  -x-x  --x-  x--x   | -x--  x-x-  -x-x    --x-
hh  x--x  --x-  -x--  x--x    | --x- -x--   x--x    --x-

It's hard to get the shit to line up right in this makeshift drumtabs...but I think it makes sense...right?
Once you get it (not YOU ari...you're probably already tapping this out on your lap right now while simultaneously solving a medium-difficulty sudoku)...once you  (anybody) get it, try it over a simple form in your head...any 32 bar AABA should do...or just count!  You start recognizing certain milestones where different parts of the pattern recycle to remind you that you're still on, or warn you that you done effed up.
Then try it over different tunes/forms/time-signatures/dynamics/instrumentation.
Take 2 advil, and repeat.
Cheers! ;)

P.S.  Let me know of any errors...I can't afford a proofreader

I've been working on something like this in 7/4 recently, except without the clave, instead playing the HH along with the shuffle, creating a little metric modulation.  The clave is a nice touch to the dotted quarter time.

Super killing!!! That's all fine. What you should do though, is play Ornithology left hh, Confirmation on the floor tom, sweep 32nds between rack tom and snare with lhand, spit bb's on the ride cymbal (swinging @ 400), and play the bd part from "Oakland Stroke." Pretty easy, but I wanted to give a warmup first. You can definitely use this groove on any singer/songwriter gig! Very nice!!!!!!!!!!!!
