Category: News and Politics
I have been trying to keep up with politics to a degree (not letting it take over my life, or make me angry like I got during the last election). My central information supplier is MSNBC's Meet the Press podcast. It's the same as the Sunday morning show, but I am not home for TV on Sunday mornings.
I loved Meet the Press because of the host, Tim Russert. He was a solid man, known for his intense questioning. If a political type came on the show unprepared to talk about a misstep or mistake, Russert was all over that person. I learned a lot through Russert, because he was really prepared to talk to these political types.
But two weeks ago Tim Russert died at work suddenly. Now I don't know who to listen to from the main stream media. I know I should get information about politics from something other than network television - I read the Christian Science Monitor onliine, but get more info from an hour with Russert.
I just wanted to express how i am grieving the loss of this public figure. I miss Tim already, for his quality work and his contribution to honesty in government.
If you have any recommended voices for me (nothing from Fox news), please fill me in.

Olbermann on TV if you like political theatrics, and Orionmagazine.org for just any type of social commentary. I try to actually watch and read from every angle (from conservatives to anarchists) to make an estimation on what is real and what is just the next sensation.

Good call on Russert...He avoided alot of crap and just expected people to be INTELLIGENT. You know how anytime you ask someone about a news source they always want to know who it's from so they know which pile to put it into (good or conservative, or if they swing the other way, good or LIBERAL!)? Well, Russert was reasonably polite and mostly just expected you to be intelligent.

I really enjoyed meet the press. It was a great way to stay informed, and cut out alot of "we've got to fill 24 hours" goofus.

I've been on the lookout for something else to replace it for me. I've yet to find anything that packs as much into an hour, but I'm a news junkie, so I probbaly listen/watch 20 hours of news a week, and then read all those current events books...
Well, not all.
Not even many.

Actually, I'm a damn liar.

You know what I've been watching lately? You're not going to like it.

I debated whether or not to mention it.

I really did.

But I decided that it would be best to you know.....

Just THROW IT OUT THERE, and let you do with it as you will.

As you will, you understand.

Because you're an adult.
An intelligent, calm, patient adult.

Now, keep in mind that I'm more disgusted with the Bush admin. than your average person. Well, slightly less, probably, since I see that they had the sense to put Petraus in charge when nobody else woulda thought of it and they are doing the PEPFAR thing and the millenium challenge acct....
But I still will vote democrat this time without blinking.

Maybe I should also emphasize my disdain for the FNC....before I mention the following show that I've come to watch weekly.

But on the regular, broadcast fox channel, there is a morning show. And it usually has a host at first who interviews people, and then they do a panel thing in the 2nd half.

It's a pretty good show! The host actually is pretty good at getting his guests to address the issue and questions without being a total jerk...

The panel is tilted kinda wonky...It's got 1 guy from the weekly standard (a neocon publication), but he's actually pretty cool most of the time. He says things worth considering. Then there is Brit Hume, who is fairly famous, and kinda an asshole sometimes, but at least worth listening to. He's a conservative, but he explains himself well. And then the two "liberals" are from NPR (which automatically makes them liberal, I guess). 1 (the woman) seems like she's just plain smart, and then the other NPR guy goes off sometimes (he's a genuine liberal, or at least democrat) and gets too worked up. And the host, even though my suspicion is that he leans to the right (at least), but he usually does a pretty decent job of staying out of the fights and really moderating.

I think it's called "Fox News Sunday" or something like that....anyway. Just thought I'd mention it.

I've actually thought lately (just a little) about putting together some sort of youtube thing every week about 20 minutes long to summarize/explain the most important stories of the week.

But that'd be more work than I want to put in.
