discman:  skippy, and  becoming more so with age.  does not like to play linty, fingerprinty old cd's in the car. (i do my best to keep them clean, but discman still isn't satisfied)

cd walkman:  okay, it's possible that it's only my imagination, but it seems to me like the percussion doesn't have as much snap or oomph to it as with the discman.  in any case i've had to reset all the levels in my car to accomodate it.  it is definitely less tempermental about what tracks it wants to play than my old friend discman, and this is a big plus.  cd walkman also has a radio tuner in it, which is kind of neat, since i can therefore theoretically use it to get audio on the tv's at the gym.  unfortunately it is too freaking huge to fit in the, you know, pockets for personal items that workout machines have.

final outcome:  discman stays at home with my (elderly, equally temperamental) stereo, where at least it doesn't get jostled.  cd walkman rides shotgun with me.  everybody's happy.

THERINA BELLA

I only just got an ipod last year. I've been disgusted with music since I started converting to mp3's. You miss out on the old school "album" experience and most records now are being made with the intention of a "single" and a few filler tracks in between. Disappointing to say the least.
I miss my cdwalkman. He's retired into the closet, next to the dual cassette player boom box from which I taped songs off the radio at age 7.

I miss moveable parts.

there's something about asking oneself "What do I want to listen to?" and then walking over to a pile of things, looking at the artwork on the things, turning them over in your hands, selecting one, opening it up, and putting the contents into a machine of some kind.

there's also something about listening to ALBUMS in the manner they were originally intended to be played. the other day i listened to roughly half of Abbey Road on the way to work and i actually had to ask my boss (a huge beatles fan) "What's the last song on side A of Abbey Road?" and it was right where i'd left off listening. coincidental, but weirdly cosmic.
