I had a rude shock this month. My wife and son were in a serious car accident. They'll be OK, but it made for a pretty rough Spring. Between dealing with accident/recovery issues and work I haven't had much time for fishing this Spring. There's been an extended dry spell here in the mid-atlantic too. I did get out to Harrisonburg lately to Black Run. That's a pretty nice little stream, for you GWNP fans, but I can imagine that it's seen better days. It seems like no matter where I go around here the trout are getting pretty scarce, due to polution and acid rain. Never-the-less, I had a great day. Parking at the end of the road, where a few people live, I had a nice hike up the creek a couple of mile before I started fishing. Snow was falling gently in soft waves as dark clouds slipped over the mountain, but it was in the 40's so I wasn't worried about any accumilation. The water was low and clear...more like a Summer day than a Spring day. I started working up the broken boulders to walk along a deadfall that lay along the water when I realized that the tree, which really was a long, limbless trunk, had bear scat it's full length. Looked like momma and a cub or two, by the amount I figured I was just downhill from their winter den. The shrubs were just getting green tips, but it looked to me like there were lots of blueberry bushes in the area, which would explain why she'd like it so much. I started working the water with a March Brown #16, but didn't get much of a rise. After a while I switched to a Copper John beadhead, and took a small native, but it was clear that the fish weren't in the mood, and really, neither was I. I just sat there by the stream for a while thinking about how lucky I was to get to sit out there in a place like that. It was really beautiful. Clear water, snow gently dropping on my shoulders, and now noise except the water rushing past. It's good to be able to get by yourself and be quiet for a while. I mean REALLY by yourself. Not locked in a room somewhere, but MILES from the nearest person. It gives you a chance to really think about things and clear your head. I only caught one fish that day.....but man did I feel great when I got home. Some things are just worth doing.
