Who Gives Kudos:

I am launching a new digital music store for my record label, called the Puzzle Tree Online Store. I want your feedback first. Responses to any or all of the following would be appreciated. You can email us at contact at puzzletreemusic dot com. Or you can post comments here on the Myspace.

1 We are planning on making all of our music available in a variety of formats. How important is it to you to have the option of downloading a file that has better fidelity than an MP3? Would you be interested in a 24 bit 96k version? 16 bit AIFF? FLAC? Anything else?
2 What do you think a fair price is for a digital album? How about a 5 song EP?
3 Are you a fan of the idea of “pay what you want”? If so, why?
4 Do you buy CDs, digital downloads or both?
5 Where do you purchase music?
6 How do you discover new music these days?
7 In what environments to you listen to music?
8 When you want to check out a song a friend told you about, where do you look first?

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have that you think we may find interesting. Thanks in advance for your input.

Pete

hey pete!
1.not too important to me,I still listen to old fashioned cd's! but my son downloads music,so to him it's very important.I'm not sure what format he uses, though.

2.don't know about digital.5 song EP?maybe about 7.99-9.99.

3.I have not heard of that idea.sounds cool, but the artist could lose out in the end possibly.hmm.

4. CD's baby!!
5.mostly online stores, plus I hunt around used music stores.
I love to find treasures from the past!
6.radio and my son.

7.mostly home or in car.

8.
I ask Zac!

hope that helps!

1. Mp3 Is OK, better fidelity would be appreciated, but Every Mp3 I have I convert back to CD for listening anyway.

2. I can't really comment as an Australian, prices are very, very different here, and the exchange rate is rather poor at the moment.

3 I prefer to buy whole albums, there are so often hidden gems on there, I don't like to go for something 'cause it's "popular".

4 Both, but as a general rule More likely to purchase CD, and Mostly the Downloads I get is hard to find stuff.

5 Music Store Pref.

6 I don't, Radio is rubbish, so any new stuff i find is purely by chance, i have been the same for at least the last 10 years, and have still purchased new stuff regularly.

7 Mostly in the Car, though I do sometimes listen on the Home Stereo.

8 Internet

Thank You very much, it is nice to know that someone is interested in our opinions. I could rant for ages about the poor selection of music in this country, the lack of decent Radio stations. I might read on the web that one of my favorite artists has a new CD coming out. cause even if I listened to the radio I wouldn't hear it, or hear about it.

All The Best With the Survey - and keep that wonderful music coming.
IT'S GREAT!!

1. I'm not terribly picky so MP3 is usually sufficient for me.

2. Fair price? Wow, well, that depends on what I'm getting. Most places I've seen nowadays sell albums in the $10-$15 range, depending on track numbers. I think it's pretty close to $0.
99/track even then

3. Personally, I tend to view myself on the optimistic realism side of the spectrum; thus I think most people will honestly pay for the items. I know there have been times in my past where $10 for an album would have broken my budget; yet, I always like to get new music so it would have been nice to have the option. I think it opens the doors to a wider audience - esp.
in economic times like now

4.
yes

5.
Digital: usually Amazon; CDs: it greatly varies

6.
Starbucks free iTunes downloads; friends who work in music/book stores; local independent-leaning radio stations

7.
mostly in the car, often in the office

8. usually, iTunes store even though I usually don't buy from them. It's easily navigable. That all is unless they give me the artist Web site with the recommendation ... then I jump over there first.
I like to support the artists as directly as possible :)

1. Higher fidelity is always better, but I would still download MP3s. That about covers it for me.

2. 11.99-16.
99

EP-3.99-8.
99

3. No, because if I really like a musician who is independent, I'll pay too much. Not great for me.

4. Both, although I'm starting to burn my downloads more often. I still prefer CDs though, so I have the music as it was intended to be heard (song order, etc.).

5.
Mostly independent music store, sometimes I succumb to the big chains; ITunes

6. Friends, local radio programs.

7.
Every: home; car; running; falling asleep; as background music; staring at the ceiling really listening

8. MySpace if it's new or ITunes or on the CD compilation "mixed tape" they've made for me.

Thanks for asking for the fans' input.

Hi Pete,

1. MP3 is ok, but I still like CDs.

2. Dunno...I like to have the physical copy, to look thru the artwork and lyrics...the one digital album I ever bought I spent 10 bucks, but it came with extra tracks and a documentary. That seemed fair enough, I guess.

3. "Pay what you want" doesn't seem fair to the artist, IMO.

4. Much prefer buying CDs, tho I have bought a few downloads.

5. Mostly Amazon, cause a lot of the stuff I like I can't find in the stores.

6. Internet radio at work, word of mouth from friends.

7. In the car, in the office...wherever and whenever I can.

8. Poke around Amazon, look them up on YouTube, or check out the artist wesbite.

Thanks for asking for our input...BTW, do you have a fanpage over on Facebook? I found you there, but not a fanpage...hmm, perhaps I can make you one! :)
