Thursday, 27 August 2009 Sylva’s free concert series – Concerts on the Creek – concludes its first season with a special two-evening grand finale this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29.Chris Cates and the Master Plan, an Asheville band that blends rock, funk and R&B with a dash of beach music, takes the stage Friday evening, while the critically-acclaimed bluegrass band Dehlia Low performs Saturday evening. Both shows are from 6-9 p.m. at the new pavilion beside Scott Creek in the Bridge Park in downtown Sylva. Chris Cates and the Master Plan will showcase a set list of familiar songs from the 1970s to present day, along with a few beach-inspired tunes from their newest CD, “Carolina Songs.” “We’ll take everyone on a journey through the history of rock, R&B and beach music,” said Cates. Dehlia Low is an Asheville-based bluegrass group. The band focuses on songwriting that draws from the sounds of early roots country, with instrumentation influenced by early and modern bluegrass. The five band members hail from all points of the bluegrass nation: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Mississippi. Low’s self-titled EP was named No. 16 of the top 100 releases in 2008 by Asheville radio station WNCW. Concert goers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for the free shows, which are sponsored by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.
