The 80s were a strange time for horror movies. Most of what was coming out just sucked but you also saw legendary movies such as Return of the Living Dead. During this decade Wes Craven made a name for him self with a silly flix called A Nightmare on Elm Street. Most of his movies kinda suck but Serpent and the Rainbow stuck out and took a somewhat real jab at the zombification of humans.
Based on the book by Wade Davis. When Dr. Alan is in Haiti in search of a zombification drug he becomes entwined into a world of corruption, fear and voodoo. While on his search Alan becomes the target of an evil regime that wants to keep their ways to them self. After retrieving the zombie drug, and a hole in his testicle, Alan returns to America only to find that he must return to Haiti to destroy the mental curse he has brought upon himself.
I think this movie is lightly based on true events. Serpent has a very old school feel to it but with an almost realistic twist. I say almost cause the last 10 min. of the movie are kinda silly.
