Current mood: tired
We just arrived home from our last show of our Midwestern winter tour. After driving all night from Columbia, Missouri and hardly sleeping a wink (due in part to a magical trucker potion that makes you stay awake for hours longer than any reasonable person should), I figure there must be no better time than now to share our travel experience with you all.
First show was at the 7th Street Entry. This was an all electronic bill with the Dearling Physique, the New Monarchs and Nobot. We played without a live drummer for this show, which fit the vibe pretty well. This was a fond farewell before we took to the road the next day.
After braving the terrible road conditions, we arrive in Eau Claire for our first out of town gig of the tour. Noah (our drummer) joined us for this show and all the remaining shows. The New Monarchs toured around with us to all the shows and they played another in a series of excellent sets in Eau Claire. Local favorites, Meridene and Laarks graced the stage and both put on excellent shows. I also discovered that beer is way cheaper in Eau Claire and indulged my beer tooth just a bit. The next morning we watched the first two thirds of Blade Trinity with Aaron who kindly took us in and let us sleep in his house. THANKS AARON.
We made it to Madison a little ahead of schedule so we grabbed a pitcher of Spotted Cow (which was a new brew to me). The Revolving Doors opened the show. This is a trio of gentlemen with drum machines, keyboards and a drummer and it was a good fit for us. Glass Ghosts finished the night with a wild performance art musical that was a sight to see. They’re intricate stage performance included the cutting of raw meat with shears, Polaroid picture taking and a mysterious, gas mask wearing stage hands. Later that evening, our new friend, Sean, let us stay at his amazing apartment / art gallery where we watched Blue Velvet projected on the wall and mused over life and love until five in the morning.
We had no show the next day, so we went to Chicago and met up with some friends where we took to the bar scene. It was a good night and it was a nice break from playing shows. The next day, we played the Empty Bottle with the New Monarchs and Helicopters. Our good friend Jen met us in Chicago to travel with us for the rest of the tour. She made us an awesome merch display out of some scrap paper and comic books..... The next day, we took off for Iowa City, where we played the Mill. The New Monarchs and Us played to a modest crowd. After clearing our things, a gentleman at the bar offers to buy us all a drink. After a brief introduction, we were all a little star struck to learn that this gentleman was none other than Creg Norton of Hüsker Dü fame. Creg chatted us up for the duration of the evening. A young woman named Ally took us in and gave us a place to crash for the night. Once we awoke, we took to the road and arrived in Columbia Missouri hours before our show. This gave us time to walk around Columbia a bit. This was a welcome change from the intense van-driving marathon we had just been on. By this time we were all exhausted and ready to sleep in our beds so when the show ended, we all opted to try and drive all the way home over night. We left Columbia at two in the morning. I took the first driving shift and made it into Des Moines Iowa at 5:30 am. Our good friend Jen took us the rest of the way and we were in Minneapolis by 10 am. I have never been so tired in my life, which may explain the rather unstructured narrative of this little tour reflection. I would like to thank the New Monarchs for being some righteous guys and all the people that shared their homes with us. We are very grateful. Now, if you will excuse me, sleep is calling my name and I don’t like to keep her waiting. OH YES. Please come to our first show back in town on January 17th at the Uptown. We will be playing with the New Monarchs and These Modern Socks. Check the shows page for details. love always, Matt and the rest of I, Colossus
