Join the Burning River Roller Girls On July 22, 2009!
Send us your contact info! We are not registering any new skaters until July 22, 2009, but we still want to send you updates and tips on how to join the Burning River Roller Girls. Email recruiting@burningriverrollergirls.com with your contact info. You can also find updated information on our website at http://www.burningriverrollergirls.com/recruit_index.html
START TRAINING NOW! There are 3 essential things every skater needs to do on a weekly basis: 1. The most obvious... SKATE SKATE SKATE! Get comfortable and stable on skates at roller rinks, at the park, even in your home! You can even start playing roller derby with our local recreational league, Northern Ohio wRECk Roller Derby! 2. Cardio Dedicate yourself to a cardio activity (something that reaches your target heart rate for 20 minutes or more) 3-5 times a week. 3. Strength Training Weight training, plyometrics, pilates, basically anything that gives you body strength is essential, because playing roller derby uses your entire body, not just your legs!
Tryout Schedule: Tryout Registration (subject to change) Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 9:30 - 11 p.m. United Skates of America • 30325 Palisades Pkwy. Wickliffe, OH 44092 Fresh Meat August (subject to change) Sundays 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:30 - 11 p.m. United Skates of America • 30325 Palisades Pkwy. Wickliffe, OH 44092 (This schedule will resume for the entire league in September unless otherwise announced.)
Tryout Requirements Must be a woman, 21 years of age or older, that can commit to 3 practices a week. Bring to registration: • A COPY of Driver’s License or State ID • A COPY of Proof of medical insurance • $75 check or cash (nonrefundable) • All required gear for review and approval (see Required Gear for details)
How are tryouts held? Never fear, we don’t just watch you skate for one practice! Signing up for tryouts allows you to attend practices from Fresh Meat August through to the month before the draft (TBD). You must meet the requirements stated in the New Recruit Policy, as well as pass the WFTDA minimum skills requirements, however meeting these requirements doesn’t guarentee you will be drafted. Once these requirements are met, the team captains will decide who is eligible for the draft. Anyone not eligible will be notified before the draft.
Required Gear This gear must be acquired by the registration date. When brands are listed, if there is any gear not listed that you would like to purchase, contact Recruiting to ensure that it is of appropriate quality for roller derby. * Quad Speed Skates Indoor Wheels - If you buy the cheaper skates, we will not allow you to begin training on the wheels the skates come with. Most packages can be upgraded to have better wheels. The following are examples of popular wheels used within our league: Fugitives, Flat-Outs, Twisters, Tuners, Mojos, Zodiacs * Skateboard Helmet * Knee Pads - Inexpensive knee pads will not be acceptable because of their lack of knee protection. The 2 knee pads below, or a brand comparable upon approval of Derby Ops, are required for you to participate with our league: • 187 Pro Knees Kneepads • TSG FORCE III Knee Pads * Elbow Pads * Wrist Guards * Mouth Guard
Where To Buy Gear Any sporting goods store should have some of the needed gear, however kneepads and skates are more difficult to find. We strongly recommend getting fitted for skates versus buying blindly online! The following are where we get most of our gear: Skater’s Edge (ask for Rich!!!) 16211 Lorain Ave, Cleveland 44111 • (216) 252-3986 Roller Derby Girl.com SinCitySkates.com
Required Attendance If for any reason you are unable to make these requirements, contact Recruiting to discuss your options. For consideration to be drafted onto a team, you must attend the registration date and a MINIMUM requirement of 75% of all available practices, approximately 9 a month. This is higher than the league requirements stated in the Good Standing Policy, which is approximately 7 practices a month. Expect to attend 3 practices or events per week as an average once you join the league. The leauge runs on the time BRRG skaters volunteer to its committees (merchandise, PR, bout production, etc.) so if you are unable to make the time commitment, you may want to consider joining as a ref or other crew member.
Monthly Dues $35 monthly dues will be collected no later than the second Tuesday of every month. This goes towards the cost of the practice rink, bout venues, supplies, etc. The tryout registration fee will cover secondary insurance and first month’s dues.
Not just for female skaters! There are a lot of people involved in the production of a bout besides the skaters - referees, track officials, merch girls, bench managers, etc. There are many opportunities to be involved with the Burning River Roller Girls! Please contact us if you are interested!
