Where Bernanke and Washington fail, New York rock band The Ks strive to succeed in shoring up the struggling economy. "No new deficit inducing tax cuts are going to save us," claimed Dan Kilian, frontman for The Ks, "The people are going to have to save ourselves." In a bold new marketing ploy, this band is trying to bring about a one (or two) off holiday, called "Dead Presidents Day" to focus on spending money, exchanging gifts and holding parties as a form of grassroots stimulus. The band has posted this item on a recent program.
Let us suggest a grassroots solution: Dead President’s Day. The goal of Dead President’s Day is to create a special one-off gift giving holiday designed to coincide with the stimulus package coming out of Washington, despite our doubts about the package’s merits. Our directive to you: Go out and buy something now, something special you would not ordinarily buy, perhaps a band’s CD or a T-shirt or something. Then on Dead President’s Day, give a loved one some money to spend. Take some money from a loved one, and spend it. There will be a delay in finding out if this did in fact help our economy. This will be more beneficial to the next president than the current one. A set date for Dead Presidents Day is coming soon. Would you like to find out more, or be part of the plan? Of course, this is a form of self promotion, but the band does not find self promotion odious. "This is benevolent capitalism," explained Kilian, "As thrives The Ks, so thrives Dead Presidents Day, so thrives, hopefully, the economy. Even talking about it may have some benefits to the public outlook." The band is seeking volunteers to spread the word about Dead Presidents Day as it debates the ideal day for the holiday. Despite reservations about the Washington stimulus package, it is hoped to be timed to coincide with tax returns, or soon after. June is the likely month.
Will this holiday help? The band is concerned about U.S. citizen’s lack of savings. "We do Dead Presidents Day this year and maybe the next," said Kilian, "and then we do Piggy Bank Day."
