Brooklyn, NY
September 23rd, 2009
It's about that time again. CMJ Music
Marathon & Film Festival 2009 will hit New
York City from October 20-24. For 5 days and
nights over 1,200 artists and 120,000 fans
will take over more than 75 of the city's
greatest nightclubs and theaters.
Headquartered once again at New York
University's Greenwich Village campus; don't
miss your chance to participate in New York
City's largest music festival.
-------
Those Chosen are also the
first act to be
signed to Savannah Boogie Music and
Song, the
digital distribution company and creative
incubator started by Bodega President, Wes
Jackson. While showcasing great talent this
event will also serve as a bit of a coming
out party for the new business.
"Savannah
Boogie is the natural extension of our brand.
A way to continue to work with these great
artists in a meaningful and profitable way
that will allow them to continue to create
great music. Those Chosen rocked our first
round of 'Show and Prove' in the Spring [of
2009]. While they didn't play the [Brooklyn
Hip-Hop] Festival we knew we wanted to be in
business with them. Look out for their
project '5ive' this November as well as more
from Savannah Boogie."
-------
For the past seven years we
have used the
platform of CMJ to expose Hip-Hop fans,
critics, and professionals alike to new and
progressive talent. Our CMJ Showcase is like
the little brother to the Annual Brooklyn
Hip-Hop Festival, the largest Hip-Hop event
in New York City. While we bring 10,000+ out
to the park every June, every Fall we bring
several hundred out to the City to get a
glimpse of what everyone will be talking
about by Christmas.
This year is no exception as we pull the best
and brightest from California, Detroit, D.C.
and of course Brooklyn.
-------

Those
Chosen
An avant garde hip-hop group known for their
street influenced, politically fueled,
spiritual lyricism consists of Japetto,
Kornbread and Foreshadow. The trio's common
love for music helped form a musical
brotherhood that has Those Chosen on a
journey to become the premiere influence
within music.
A constant staple in California's hip-hop
scene Those Chosen have gained recognition
with live performances on MTV2, numerous
national music festivals, sold out concerts
and collaborations with hip hop legend Slick
Rick and Grammy-winning super-producer IZ
Avila of the Avila Brothers, in addition to
hit maker THX.
The group's most recent projects "Steamulus:
The Watts Riot Effect" and "Reign Food" A
Street Album captures listeners with dynamic
lyricism, vivid story telling that ranges
from estranged relationships, feel-good vibes
to triumphant glory mode and beyond always
reaching new sonic heights. Moving even
further away from the commercialism of
mainstream hip hop's immediate hooks and
general sound Those Chosen continue to find
their place with fans and music lovers on a
global scale.
-------

Pac
Div
The Southern California trio, Pac Div
consists of brothers, Like and Mibbs, along
with longtime friend BeYoung. The three came
together in high school. While new talents
strayed towards microwave music that trades
quantity for quality, Pac Div crafted an
original sound timeless sound influenced by
the golden era of hip hop.
During the course of the group's development,
Hip Hop superstars began to notice. With
Myspace love alone, Pharell Williams of The
Neptunes reached out to affirm that Pac Div
is making innovative and fun music. After
that, a chance meeting with The Roots'
Questlove in a Los Angeles record store led
to a passed demo - which shockingly then led
to the drummer personally calling the group
to also extend support.
Offers from major labels followed, the group
found a home with Universal Motown Records
and readying for their debut release, Grown
Kid Syndrome in late 2009. The album
delightfully forgets the tangents rap music
has taken in the mainstream and simply
affirms that good music is timeless.
-------

Big Sean
Sean Anderson, p.k.a. Big Sean, is the newest
artist signed to G.O.O.D. Music/Island Def
Jam at the young age of 20.
Sean gained a strong relationship with
102.7FM, a local radio station in Detroit
where he displayed his rhyming skills weekly.
There, he met Kanye West after a radio
interview in 2005 and got a chance to display
his talent by freestyling for Mr. West,
giving him a copy of his music and sending
numerous tracks for him to critique. After
months of submitting songs and numerous
meetings, Sean finally got the call from
Kanye West himself saying that he wanted to
sign him. Big Sean officially signed to
G.O.O.D. Music in 2007.
Sean has two mixtapes under his belt starting
with "Finally Famous-The Mixtape" [Nov. 2007]
and "UKNOWBIGSEAN-Finally Famous Vol. 2"
[Spring 2009]. His hit single "Getcha Some"
took over the Internet and created major buzz
for the artist and quickly solidified him as
a breakout star. The single first debuted on
Kanye West's "Cant Tell Me Nothin' Mixtape"
giving him the exposure needed to showcase
and introduce his talent to the world. Big
Sean is scheduled to release his debut album
entitled "Finally Famous" in Fall 2009. The
album features Hip Hop stars such as ten-time
Grammy Award-winning artist Kanye West,
Pharrell, The Dream, and many more.
-------
Jesse
Boykins
Jesse Boykins III has a timeless sound. He
shares a point of view that crosses all
genres and generations. Every note and each
word in all his recorded works to his live
performance is skillfully crafted evoking
emotions that move the listener to examine
and acknowledge those feelings within themselves.
When Jesse performs, people pay attention.
The young crooner has a gift of engaging
audiences with not only his soothing vocals
but infectious personality. Jesse is known
for his collaborations with indie hip hop
sensation Theopholis London and has shared
the stage with soul singer greats including
Bilal and Eric Roberson. With the energy of
his band, The Beauty Created, behind him, the
JB3 experience never disappoints.
-------

Diamond
District
"In The Ruff" is the highly anticipated debut
album from new DC Hip-Hop
group "The Diamond District", created by
state veterans Oddisee, X.O.
& YU. In The Ruff is the answer for any lover
of hip hop who asks the
question - "Where did that grimy East coast
sound go?"
The group was founded by rapper/ producer
Oddisee, who has a long list
of production & collaboration credits with
the likes of Freeway, Talib
Kweli, Little Brother, Jazzy Jeff, and Buckshot.
In The Ruff is a raw mid-90's Boom-Bap themed
album for the DC state of
mind, destined to appeal to all lovers of hip
hop's golden era, managing to
travel back in time and push the boundaries
of DC Hip-Hop
simultaneously.
