Coultrain
The Adventures Of Seymour Liberty
Ju Ju Dust Music; 2008

If the music world isn't completely hopeless then St. Louis soul singer/ songwriter Coultrain is on the brink of something truly amazing with The Adventures of Seymour Liberty (released November 2007). Inches away from being a perfect album (If it weren't for a few decent, yet slightly forgettable tracks), Coultrain's debut effort is easily one of the best releases of 2007.

I must admit, I was sleepin' on the musical revolutionary that is 'Train until Phonte of Little Brother began singing his praises. Like some others, I was slightly thrown off by his chosen moniker, but lucky for my ears I didn't judge a book by its cover. Coultrain's sound is two parts Anthony Hamilton, one part John Legend, and five parts sheer genius. From the immaculate lyrics on "Green," and the infectious vibe of "Screw," to the palpable emotion on "Self Pity," Coultrain delivers a complex sound that only an authentic artist (as opposed to a manufactured studio puppet) could create. It's no surprise that he's slated to be a major contributor to the upcoming PPP album.

If you still have doubts about Coultrain by the time you finish reading this, then I'm not really sure I can offer you much more. But when you finally pick up your late pass I assure you that you won't be disappointed. With a voice like cognac over ice and an audible spirit that's seemingly seen multiple lifetimes, Coultrain's dynamic sound will endure the test of time. Drink up and enjoy.
