BOILED IN LEAD Celebrate 26th Anniversary with New Lineup

Twin Cities-based group Boiled In Lead mark 26 years since their first performance on March 17 1983 with a St. Patrick's Day concert in the First Avenue Mainroom. Joining BiL will be special guests Roma di Luna, the Brass Kings, and the Minnesota Police Pipe Band.

This concert also marks the debut of a new Boiled In Lead lineup -- drummer Robin "Adnan" Anders left the group in the Fall of 2008; joining the band is renowned percussionist Marc Anderson. Marc is best-known for his partnership with ECM recording artist Steve Tibbetts, which has taken him around the world. He's made four solo albums, alongside numerous producing and percussion credits, and performances with many great artists such as Don Cherry, Robert Fripp, Altan, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Marc has studied traditional drumming from around the world, specifically in Ghana, China, and Brazil. He is also an adjunct professor in the Anthropology Department at Hamline University.

When asked how he felt about about joining BiL, Anderson said, "It's great to be part of this band -- friends and colleagues for many years and now playing music together as Boiled in Lead. It's nice to join a group that has history and chemistry and at the same time has an attitude of adventure and exploration. The groove is long and deep but the destination is always in play." Todd Menton also commented, "Marc brings power, versatility, and compass points we've never visited. He rocks hard and he's a master of the odd, lunar rhythms that have always inspired us."

ABOUT THE BAND

Boiled In Lead are innovators in bringing “folk music” kicking and screaming to rock audiences (and rock music to screaming folk audiences!) Beginning in 1983 at Goofy's Upper Deck with punk-rock-inspired arrangements of traditional folk songs and instrumental dance music from England and Ireland, the band has since incorporated music from around the world, alongside memorable original songs such as "The MicroOrganism," "Army (Dream Song)" and 2008's song of ravenous fish swimming up the Mississippi toward Minnesota "Silver Carp." (They're here -- http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/12/03/flyingcarp/ )

Throughout it all, the musicians improvise freely yet stay in sync. The group and individuals have won over 20 Minnesota Music Awards, and toured throughout the US and in Europe. With the return of original lead singer Todd Menton alongside fiddler David Stenshoel, bassist Drew Miller, guitarist Dean Magraw, and the addition of world-travelling percussionist Marc Anderson, the highly-identifiable BiL sound begins yet another new chapter.

ROMA DI LUNA's music recalls early 20th century folk and country music set to modern times. As husband and wife, Alexei and Channy Moon Casselle co-write songs that are plaintive and sometimes dark, noted for simple instrumentation along with piercing, emotively stunning vocals.

THE BRASS KINGS play hard-driving acoustic music with washboard, rope and guitar, led by resophonic guitarist Steve Kaul.

The MINNESOTA POLICE PIPE BAND have joined this annual event for many years, clearing the Mainroom floor to set the stage for BiL. They are a nationally recognized, top quality competition and performance bagpipe and drum corps. Recently they joined hundreds of other Minnesotans on the Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge for a service commemorating the first year anniversary of the 35W bridge collapse.
