Current mood: adventurous Category: Parties and Nightlife
Hello Modians,
(In case you were wondering) the current mode is Purposely Hopeful.
Walking through my Hasidic neighborhood in a velvet frock with a crinoline on is usually excitement enough but Saturday held many fun surprises.
I first saw Peter, the Super Hot Roadie waiting in front of the studio busily infatuated with his iphone. We had hugs and walked into the studio to find Wendy had dutifully scooped all the equipment off the shelves and near the door.
I warmed up a bit and put my makeup on, dusted Wendy with gold, and we all chatted about the economy until David arrived with Sarah. Oh Sarah thief of of hearts that's right Dave's girlfriend is a cutie!
...loading the car took 2 man power and was no fuss whatsoever. Then Peter, Wendy and I took the train. Transferring to the D, Wendy bizarrely bumped into Fiona Maazel at Atlantic Avenue. She was looking stunning in a fine leather trench cut jacket. I'm hoping to check out her book The Last Last Chance, soon.
Yuzuru was already watching the stuff when arrived at Arlene's Grocery, unloaded and set up in the corner.
Dave from GYNC greeted us warmly at the door and encouraged us to make ourselves comfortable. Surprisingly Randall Shreve was there and the best part of the surprise was that he did 5 songs impromptu! His new album "The Entertainer" is coming on October 14. if you got to see him and want to know more check out myspace.com/randallshreve. if you didn't catch him, check it out anyway, he has an amazing command of tonality and tension that I really like.
I ordered a $6 PBR and shot of Jack for after the show beforehand, cuz you gotta be prepared.
Ron, Ric and Eli arrived and I had a sudden realization: Wow we've got a seven piece band tonight!
Did we all have that delicious tomato basil, mozzarella slice? From acorss the street? Yeah that place was hoppin last Saturday. Did you find it garlicky? I liked it but the Jooge said it was garilcky, even though she loved it...
But I digress... What was your impression of the gig? I personally felt like the brass was on fire. And Yuzuru just patently hot. I was feeling properly lit and extremely well mic'd despite the obvious technical difficulties, I simultaneously had a sense of being in rehearsal, alone with the band, having fun.
David of course did a smashing job (rim shot) and pummeled the audience senseless. The guy is just amazing and he looks so happy when he plays.
The set flowed easily. I had a couple of microphone issues, Howard the sound guy was terrific about coming to help me out. The band would like to thank Doug, Judy, Swag, Kate Angus, Moira Meltzer-Cohen. their friend Megan. Theta Delts, and Marc, Jooge and Sarah for taking pics.
So you all got to see us really play with each other in the fun sense too. It was a truly wonderful experience, playing with the horn section. I really hope we can continue expanding the sound in the band. Wendy has been brilliant lately, writing parts and working like nuts.
I met some fabulous young people that I expect to hear from (Heidi, Benjamin, Matt, John) and caught up with some beautiful fully blossomed high school mates of mine. One, Moira I haven't seen in many years...so nostalgia, music, the tight hot brass section blotted out the tense otherworld created by Mr. Bush's ownership Society Imploding in on itself. (forgive me my soapbox, but do you recall the Savings and Loan scandal of the mid nineties? That was a Bushtastrophe as well.)
Hey kids, if you think your friends are sexy now, I got news: they're hotter in their 30's! Yeah so we got political and said nasty things about nasty people who shoot wolves from the sky....and we're getting together on
A night of sweet intimacies and round room warm vibes, I felt a kind of calm familiarity. O, yeah I had a great time but what about you? I saw some faces I haven't seen in a while, with fabulous haircuts. I enjoyed the conversation with even drunker than me guy after the show, which by the way we forget to tape. And when I say "we" I mean that if I singled any one member of the band out that would be atrocious.
Wendy shimmered gently with gold and gingham, David tripped the sticks fantastic, he always plays so well when Sarah's there.....The trumpets relaxed in comfy party gear, leaning back, lending an easy jazz vibe to the set. All horns at the ready pounded out some genuine power. If I were you, I'd expect to see them again.
On a more professional tone, I'd like to thank Denise and Dave for giving us the shot at Arlene's crowd. So I think we're just gonna hafta keep on rockin' and if it's for the children well then, okay.
ya dig? much love, Camille
