RADICAL MUSIC MAN GETS JAIL

By IKIMULISA LIVINGSTON

July 6, 2006 -- The man who stirred the political pot during the 1970s with his song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" will be singing the blues after a judge ordered him to prison yesterday.

Gil Scott Heron, 56, a pioneer of hip-hop music, was sentenced to two to four years in Queens Supreme Court for violating a plea deal on a drug-possession charge by leaving a treatment center.

Heron said he is HIV-positive and claimed the in-patient rehab center stopped giving him his medication. But the prosecution noted Heron once skipped out for an appearance with singer Alicia Keys.

Justice Pauline Mullings could have given Heron up to six years.

Absolute disgrace, Can't believe the sentence given for what? Walking out of a treatment centre, and why the hell shouldn't he be allowed to carry on with his creative talent i.e appearence with Alicia Keys..

There should be protests going on to get this musical genius out of prison and back where he belongs making music to the masses.

Didn't know he was HIV positive though thats a shame.

Isn't it just like the post to toss out a story with a healine like that.

Intelligent people know it's a rag.  I'm sorry so many people with so much money have so little compassion.  To hell with the paper AND the writer!!!

He's in jail because he clearly points out - The military & the monetary get together when they think it's neccessary. Thats not a good statement for national morale in the senates eyes.
Muhammed Ali all over again....complete bollocks! Luckily his spirirt and voice lives through others...Thanks for your wisdom Gil. All the very best.

Who will be the next Billy Green? I sure hope it ain't Gil Scott-Heron. Makes my eyes water thinking of his words and that he has been seduced and reduced by drugs. Why are we so preoccupied by how retarded a newspaper is or how illogical the "justice" system is??? We know the media sucks and it and the justice system are tools of the rich. Why not focus our attention on making real changes in all our communities. "His old man got a problem, and it's a bad one." It's totally awful Gil is HIV positive, but what is sad is not using that knowledge to educate others. I've quit listening to the lie known as hip hop. There's such a false sense of worth and of what's important in these times. How much money is there in the hip hop community? How much change??? Where are the Huey P. Newtons, Bobby Seales, Eldridge Cleavers, Stokely Carmichaels, H. Rap Browns, Angela Davis', Kathleen Cleavers, Elaine Browns, David Hilliards, FRED HAMPTONS!! LITTLE BOBBY HUTTONS!! GIL SCOTT-HERONS!! OF TODAY????? As Gil once sang, "It's winter in America..." still. Who'll survive in America, who'll survive in America???

P.S. Mumia can't do it all from jail.....

Gil,
I hope you are able to keep up with your blog. As a 17 year old girl in 1973 just getting ready to graduate from high school, I found myself with a big crush on you. I found your words to be so appropriate for the times. After hearing H20WaterGate Blues, I wrote you a letter asking you to call me and I was shocked that you did!!! So shocked that I was speechless and lost my opportunity to speak with you. I totally understand what you are going through right now; however, I also know that the Creator meets us at the level of our needs--ALWAYS. This is time for you to reflect, write, rest up and come back and join your people in the new struggle . . . The struggle of excellence, building for our children's futures and support four the lost tribe of ours in this country. Believe me, we are out here working, so do your time peacefully (like I know you will), and get well soon so that you can take your rightful place with the elders. Ase'.

Sincerely,

Jabea Bolande (Gift from God; Honor has arrived).

P.S. Gia is a lovely poet!! She is her daddy's girl.

If Gil was a white, young, rich, skinny, dumb-ass, Hollywood, coke-whore like Lindsay, Paris, and the like, this wouldn't even be an issue. He'd never see a jail cell. The shit he gets thrown in jail for is minimal compared to these material superficial whores. He is a genius and a pioneer to the music revolution. He is prolific and an intellectual force of epic proportion. He is a motivator of spoken word. He is truthful and provokes profound thoughts in people. What did Paris do? She coined the phrase, "That's Hot" and stopped wearing underwear. We treat her like a hero or royal fucking goddess!

Justice system? PLEASE.

Glad he got an early parole...

yea I'm shocked to find this out! I didnt even know. I was JUST about to find out if he's performing anytime soon. That's such sad news.

Paris made money off the phrase 'that's hot'- she didnt come up with the phrase. that phrase has been around since the late 90s.

I'm confused - He was bailed in May 07 and then arrested again on August 10th 2007. They won't leave him alone. What do they do, follow him around? Waiting to pull him over. for what? some coke. Don't they have anything better to do like go catch child molesters and real criminals. This is a disgrace. Theives and murderers get less time than the time I heard they were giving him or gave him. Not sure if that was true. But Our legel system is unethical and disfunctional. Once you are charged with something, your fate lies in the hands of an individule called a judge who can be just as crooked as some of the criminals they lock up. We got to do something. Is anyone taking care of him? Does anyone know if he has a home anymore? Does anyone know what jail, state, city he is in? Does anyone know who his layer is? Does anyone want to start a fund for him? Any info, please let me know.

Gil had started performing again back in 09,2007 and working on a new album, plus a book called 'The Last Holiday', about Stevie Wonder and his successful attempt to have Martin Luther King's birthday made a national holiday in the USA. Interestingly, he was arrested again back in 10/2007 one day before a gig at NYC's SOB's on the 11th.

Makes since that a retarded judicial system would throw one of the few people who could make sense of it in prison. See how they treat our elders. two to four years is a lifetime in prison to someone who is already at the end of their lifeline. Free Gil Scott Heron, Free Mumia, free Jamil El-Amin! Free all political prisoners who's minds were deemed as lethal weapons that could shatter this fragile capitalist empire built from the best bullshit money could buy. May the music and the message of our freedom fighters continue to free our minds. Peace and Blessings Gil Scott...

Gil has been an influence on me since the early 70's. I remember playing 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' back to back with The Last poets. I wonder now at what has happened to one of the most brilliant of our modern griots. I was thrilled when I heard that 'Spirits' was comming out and ran out to get it. It would be interesting to find out how many times his name shows up in secret service documents. His message has allways been powerfull and thought pervoking. Calling for the oppressed to stand up and be counted his poetry and music moves feet as well as causes. Our energies and prayers go out to Gil.

The Revolution will not be televised because we are all too fat and happy and content watching our sit coms to actually get up and revolt. We'll just keep sitting on our hands with our mouths shut while our friends and family get sent to jail for years at a time because they decided to get high, and they didn't choose a legal drug such as alcohol or caffeine to do it. How many Americans started with a minor drug charge, then messed up probation and ended up in jail with their lives totally screwed up, all because they chose to party in a manner not sanctioned by the Man? I know a lot of people like this, and I'm sure most of you do to. The real danger in Marijuana is not the drug, it is the government. I'll take forgetfulness over jail time any day. So who is the real danger: the pothead or the government? I'll give you a hint--no potheads own nukes and no potheads have started wars.
