Current mood:  cantankerous
I mean, isn't there a war on somewhere that requires urgent attention and causes that need support?

It's retarded of me, frankly.  I don't even know who he Matt Smith is and I have never seen him act in anything - so how can I feel let down?

I don't think it's him, actually.  I think I have become so institutionalised into feeling disappointed at every single thing that happens in new Dr Who that I just, out of habit, got annoyed about it (which in itself is pretty pathetic, though true).

Having stopped and thought about it, the only thing that really annoys me is that he is 26 – but that is what I hate about everything to do with media and telly and, much as I have certain staunch ideas as to who and what the doctor should be, he is not 'too' young to be the doctor because the original idea of the doctor being a wise old father figure rather than bi-polar eye candy for housewives and homosexuals has long since been exterminated - though I have yet to really accept this as a part of the new package and I just feel that you shouldn't fancy the doctor and you, certainly, shouldn't be older than the actor playing him unless you are in the age range that already makes you 'old', which at not-quite-30 shouldn't include me!

Also, he looks like he should be in a band that thinks smoking is hard and cool and writes songs that rely on the fact that you've never heard of Joseph K, which always worries me about actors.  But that's merely a first impression of his clothes so it's no real basis for criticism…

I suppose really, the main thing was that there were a hundred terrible people who could be The Doctor and were in the running (according to The Sun) and I was so ready to be let down by their casting that my only salvation could be a choice that would make me go "I know who that is, he (not she!) is brilliant, what an inspired choice, this will be awesome!"  And instead I have no such elation.  I am not depressed specifically by this actor being cast because I don't know who he is.  What I actually have is the disappointment of not being able to definitely not be disappointed. I wanted to have with the casting the same feeling I got when i found out that RTD was buggering off and Moffat was taking over and I don't.  That's the let down and it's not even the actor's fault I feel that way

RTD said in the BBC show that casting is all important and get the right actor and the show does itself.  He is an idiot.  The majority of this new version, and all of his scripts, were little more than Sub Buffy / Hollyoaks crap where mawkish sentimentality masqueraded as legitimate gravitas and if you don't fancy David Tennant and have his beautiful smile and meerkat demeanour to distract you from what's actually being said and done, it's terrible viewing a lot of the time.   What is actually important is the writing.  Write a good script and anyone could be good as the doctor.  David Tennant was good in Blackpool because he is good and Blackpool was well written.  He was good in all the episodes that were actually well written and let him do some acting.  So as long as the scripts are well written and Moffat keeps a tighter grip on all the bullshit that RTD liked to include on purpose then it doesn't matter who the doctor is and the new guy will probably be fine – although he is young, isn't he?

I have no reason to think he will be rubbish as I have never seen him act and let's not forget that he's basically the same age Heath Ledger was when he got the Joker and we all orgasm over that so age is not a barrier because, similarly, he's years older than Kiera Knightly who has been consistently shit in tonnes more films and TV than him, so give him a bloody break and at least wait until you see him do some acting as the doctor before moaning about his casting and, similarly, don't assume he'll be good because you fancy him.

Idiots!

The most important thing to never lose sight of with Season 5 is that it's not RTD anymore, it's Moffat and therefore, all judgment MUST be reserved until show time because, unlike RTD, Moffat is actually good at writing Dr Who.

That said, he is young, isn't he?

I felt reassured by the fact that he seems naturally a bit eccentric. I had also wanted an older doctor, but I'm happy to reserve judgement. I fully expected it to be someone I hadn't heard of, so I'm neither impressed or unimpressed...

I didn't think that David Tennant could ever replace Christopher Ecclestone but he did well considering most of the awful material he had to work with. With Doctor Who and Torchwood, it's always a matter of being grateful for small mercies. At least we'll never have to put up with Catherine Tate as the Doctor's sidekick again and all of the most irritating cast member of Torchwood are gone now too.

Just as long as Russell T. Davies lets somebody else write the episodes from now on, things will probably be ok.

This new Doctor won't last more than a year anyway.

I've been somewhat blind to any bleatings the mainstream press may have made about Matt Smith - I don't even know if they've responded favourably or not!

From my point of view, the age thing would have REALLY annoyed me, had I not seen the Dr Who confidential announcing him as David Tennant's replacement. Stephen Moffat clearly expressed the feeling that his preconception had been that the role could ONLY be played by an actor in their late thirties - early forties upwards, and that it was only Matt's audition that made him feel otherwise.

Moffat has been almost singulariy responsible for all the good stuff we've seen in Dr Who since it's resurgance, so I more than resect his opinion on this. I'm really looking forward to the transfers of both principal creator and star accordingly.
