My new album "Diamond Side" features a song "A Window In The Ache" the lyrics of which are a poem by Douglas Wright. Douglas is considered to be NZ's leading dance choreographer and has received the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of this.
Last night I was invited to perform the song in Auckland at the launch of Douglas' first book of poetry "Laughing Mirror" published through Wellington based Steele Roberts, most noted for their work with Hone Tuwhare and Glenn Colqhoun. Probably the most nervous I've been before a performance! The night was a great success and Douglas' poetry is extraordinary.
From 1980 - 1983 he danced with Limbs Dance Company and choreographed several works on the company before traveling to New York (Paul Taylor Company, 1983-1987) and London (DV8 Physical Theatre, 1988). Returning to New Zealand in 1989, he formed the Douglas Wright Dance Company, with which he has created more than 30 major works, touring New Zealand, Australia and Europe.
In 2003 Wright was the subject of a feature-length documentary film, Haunting Douglas, directed by Leanne Pooley.
He has written two volumes of semi-fiction/semi-autobiography, Ghost Dance (Penguin, 2004) Terra Incognito (2006). Ghost Dance won a Montana Book Award.
