Not that I needed any reminding, but tonight proved again that worrisome axiom that life can turn on a dime. (which raises the inevitable question: what does life turn on outside of the US? Anyone?) Driving earlier to pick up Sam at the train station, when, seemingly out of nowhere, a deer darted in front of the car. It just appeared in the headlights. Bam! And then, just as suddenly, disappeared. Leaving a hefty chunk of itself in my fender and totaling the front end. I'm fine - just a little shook up. The car now has a stupid grin where the front end used to be.

I'm not complaining though. According to insurance company statistics, there are 1.5 million traffic accidents on US roads, each year, involving vehicles hitting deer, resulting in approximately 100 human deaths and 13,000 injuries.

So, even though I'm having a lousy evening - tow-trucks, insurance companies, body-shops - I realize it could have been a lot worse.

I could have been the deer.

weird... something similar happened to me in the uk 2 weeks ago. I was driving back from a gig in Brighton on the way home to London where an unnamed animal ran out in front of my car on the motorway. I swerved as best I could but there was a big band and all that I knew was I hadn't crashed ... Got home and found a big dent and a gap where my right hand side fog lights used to be!

I still have no idea what I hit, poor lamb ( it wasn't a lamb)
